What is commonly referred to as:
"The Cinderella Complex"- an idea where women are taught to believe that they will grow up to be fairtytale princesses and live happily ever after.
Woman have the Cinderella Complex installed into their heads from early youth. We are raised as little girls to think that the world is this grand fairtytale in which we will end up living in a beautiful castle, happily ever after with our prince charming and white picket fence. And this is how is should be, no?
Most woman that you ask will tell you that they've had their weddings planned since they were five years old; from the beautiful white gown, right down to the lilac bridesmaids dresses. We are supposed to go from daddy to hubby, to be swept off our feet and never have to worry about anything. The plan: graduate college honors, marry rich, and have a couple of blonde haired blue eyed babies. Ahhh, the all American dream.
So what went wrong?
Nothing. This was never how it was supposed to be! When we get to a certain point and start to see through this rhetoric, and realize that none of it is so, most of us start letting go. We retaliate. We retaliate against our parents who installed this nonsense in our head. We retaliate against society for upholding this ridiculous myth for so long. We retaliate against the men that are so far from being storybook Prince Charmings. And mostly we retaliate against ourselves.
We retaliate against ourselves in a last desperate attempt to try and justify the "Cinderella Complex"- It must be true, if not what do we have left? So we let the mail pile up on the counter for weeks and conveniently forget to pay that credit card bill. We let the house become a mess saying, "Ugh, I'll clean up next week." We do this hoping and praying subconsciously still that Prince Charming will come to rescue us and make it all better.
Most of the women that I know consider themselves to be extremely strong and independent. They have good careers, nice homes of their own, and hell most of them could probably even change a tire if they had to.
But they're still just waiting for the storybook ending...
