The Dark Knight Returns
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns is set 20 years in the future. In the absence of superheroes, criminals run amok, and a gang called the Mutants terrorize Gotham City. Bruce Wayne has been retired from crime fighting for ten years following the death of Jason Todd, the second Robin. Despite Wayne's funding of the rehabilitation of Harvey Dent (Two-Face), Dent returns to crime. Wayne dons the Batman costume again and apprehends Dent, but the populace debates whether Batman is a savior or a menace.

The Dark Knight Strikes Again
After going underground, Batman (Bruce Wayne) and his young sidekick, Catgirl (Carrie Kelly, Robin from Batman: The Dark Knight Returns), train an army of "batboys" to save the world from a "police-state" dictatorship. In a series of raids on government facilities, Batman's soldiers release from captivity aging superheroes including The Atom, The Flash and Plastic Man. Elongated Man is recruited from his job as a commercials spokesman, and Green Arrow was already working with Batman (as seen in the end of TDKR). Superman, working for the government, is ordered by the "President" (a front for Lex Luthor and Brainiac) to stop Batman. He confronts Wayne at the Batcave, but is defeated by Batman and the other superheroes.
Meanwhile, Batman's raids have not gone unnoticed by the media. After being banned for years, the freed superheroes have recaptured the public imagination, becoming a fad among youth. At a concert for the pop group "The Superchix", Batman and the other heroes make a public appearance, urging their fans to rebel against the oppressive government

Batman - The Killing Joke
The Killing Joke stirred a bit of controversy because the story involves the Joker brutally, pointlessly shooting Commissioner Gordon's daughter in the spine. This is a no-holds-barred take on a truly insane criminal mind, masterfully written by British comics writer Alan Moore. The art by Brian Bolland is so appealing that his depiction of the Joker became a standard and was imitated by many artists to follow.

His first time out patrolling reveals to him the disturbing nature of law enforcement in Gotham as a senior officer, Detective Flass, assaults an unsuspecting teenager for "staying out late". Gordon is disgusted with his partner's behavior towards all the "offenders" Jim feels that he has to straighten things out.

Batman: Red Rain, Bloodstorm & Crimson Mist {Vampire Trilogy}
All three parts to the Elseworlds/Doug Moench & Kelley Jones/Batman Dracula trilogy!!!
In Red Rain, Dracula wants to turn Gotham City into his personal kingdom of the undead. Batman is left with no choice but to side with a renegade band of vampires and face Dracula face to face.

At the same time, Batman is built on the one thing that separates him from the monsters he fights- he will not kill. As the vampiric urge to kill grows, however, he must go to extraordinary measures to fight it or lose all that he is.
The final chapter, Crimson Mist. Alfred the Butler and Commissioner Gordon face a new group of criminals besieging Gotham, and only the undead Dark Knight can stop them. Can Batman defeat Two-Face and Killer Croc without becoming a worse monster in the process?

Batman: Thrillkiller
The year is 1961, a time of transition between the fifties – the decade of Ike, McCarthyism and Jack Kerouac – and the dawn of the Sexual Revolution, the Vietnam War and turning on, tuning in and dropping out.
Like the rest of the United States, Gotham City is filled with giddy optimism. And no one could guess at the dark days that lay ahead – especially her two masked defenders Batgirl and Robin!! For them, the joyride was about to end... and the last stop was Death!
In Elseworlds, heroes are taken from their usual settings and put into strange times and places – some that have existed or might have existed, and others that can't, couldn't or shouldn't exist. This is one of those stories.

In Darkest Knight
Bruce Wayne -- you know, that guy who watched his parents die as a kid -- is sitting a home, pondering how to strike fear in the hearts of criminals. An alien spaceship crashes outside of Wayne Manor and Bruce is summoned outside, where he is give a ring of immense power. As Green Lantern of Earth, Wayne is sworn to uphold order and protect the innocent. He's also beholden to the guardians of Oa, something that the strong-willed Batman cannot easily accept.
With the power of the Lantern, Wayne is able to prevent the Red Hood from falling into a vat of chemicals and becoming the Joker. He has no trouble sweeping up crime. Some of his allies, however, have a hard time trusting him. In particular, James Gordon doesn't like the idea of one person wielding so much power. How often do we ever question Gordon's trust in Batman? Barr asserts that because, in continuity, Batman is a man, Gordon can find faith in him, but as more than a man, Gordon must remain guarded.

Reign of Terror
In this "Elseworlds" tale, the Batman mythos is re-imagined against the backdrop of revolutionary-era France -- during the "reign of terror" of the title. Knight Gallery
In 1995 DC Comics decided to change Batman's costume once again. Various artists proposed over twenty new costume designs. DC Writers, Artists, and Editors met at the annual Bat-Meet to decide on a new costume based on the submitted designs.
The Bat-Team decided on a costume, but someone forgot to notify Warner Brothers for the upcoming movie. In that movie the Batman wore an all black rubber costume and so DC began drawing Batman in an all black suit, beginning in Batman 515 in February of 1995.[citation needed]
Doug Moench, who liked all of the ideas, thought it would be interesting to print them in a Bruce Wayne journal - Knight Gallery. The designs were printed in a standard comic format with a little bit of text as if Bruce Wayne were sketching designs in a journal and writing in what he liked and disliked about each design. Taking the idea one step further, Moench used the costumes in a set of Elseworlds books called Brotherhood of the Bat and The League of Batmen.
The Knight Gallery also included possible designs for Tim Drake's Robin costume, and sketches of the Gotham City skyline and Arkham Asylum.

The person they seek has been kidnapping and decapitating the homeless for use in the robots, but that's only part of the plan: there is also a nuclear arsenal ready to be deployed. Batman : Blood Secrets
Batman: Blood Secrets takes us a long way back in time, to a young, rash Bruce Wayne just returned from his journeys around the world. Though trained in various martial arts and with a strong physical prowess, Bruce still lacks the methodical thinking which he thinks is necessary for a detective, and asks to accompany a veteran Detective on a case. The comic is a bit old, but the story is gripping and fast - as good as it gets. A must have for every Batman fan.

Batman almost kills the Joker. Robin and Catwoman hate each others' guts and start a mindless fist-fight every time they meet. And Poison Ivy takes over Superman's mind, paving the way for the Ultimate Battle: Batman vs. The Man Of Steel!

Batman: The Long Halloween
Batman: The Long Halloween was a 13-issue comic book limited series written by Jeph Loeb with art by Tim Sale. The Long Halloween is heavily influenced by film noir and films such as The Godfather. The series continues the story of Carmine Falcone introduced in Frank Miller's Batman: Year One. As Batman, Captain Jim Gordon, and District Attorney Harvey Dent collaborate to legally bring down Carmine Falcone, a series of mob-related murders begins. The mystery villain is killing mafia members affiliated with Falcone on holidays, leaving behind related tokens as a calling card, as well as the murder weapon: a .22 caliber pistol with a baby bottle nipple for a silencer.
