PS3 First-Year Sales On Par With Xbox 360's

I agree its a good thing get what you like

...but you have to understand most of the guys who like 360 were beat in the head from sony fanboys about this before this thing even started. Sony fanboys mocked everybody, bragged about sales, bragged about games, bragged about how much more powerful their system was etc...

So in essence a lot of them started it and most of these people are reacting. Sure some of them are taking things too far, but everybody is getting a kick out of the "you wait and see" arguments and the "sony will crush when it comes out" stuff, only to find out its doing marginally the same 360 did when it came out. The great "juggernaut" can't do better than the gimped red ringed POS from m$, shit thats gotta hurt in the gut. Especially seeing all your favorite games go multiplatform or not come out till 2008-2009.

You can't talk peace if you were wearing the war paint two years ago before you got your ass handed to you by nintendo and M$. All this shit is payback which is petty and childish but its fucking funny

i still want a PS3 just not in a rush :dunno: 2008-9ish maybe? if PS3 is still hanging in there around then i'll scoop one up.

I agree there are a lot of PS3 fanboys out there. But I had never seen such negativity from all angles aimed at Sony or any other gaming company for that matter. Not even towards Atari or 3DO. From people and the Press.

We really do need competition. It forces the game console makers and game developers to do right by us.

I just want to see from all camps focus on keeping the developers of these games honest. Expect high quality gaming and no sabotaging. Thats when we all get our money's worth.

Now back to the article at hand. You can look at it from a few different angles. Sales initially slow for PS3 Launch as it was for 360. PS3 has big shoes to fill if to continue matching sales of year one for XBox 360. PS3 sales are moving along just right.
or Wii is shitting on everybody.

The Wii is shitting on everybody from a hardware sales perspective. But it doesn't have the software sales or even tittles to make it a real juggernaut.

Now that NPD has released September 2007 figures, it strikes me as quite interesting that so many people were taken aback by the Xbox 360's jump to first place in hardware sales. In fact, if you remember an article I wrote back in September, it would have told you everything you needed to know about hardware sales for September.

But instead, there are a host of journalists and pundits making such a big deal out of the Xbox 360's rise, as if it wasn't expected. As I've said here hundreds of times before: videogames sell consoles, not the other way around.

So, with that in mind, I thought it would be nice to take a look at what is coming soon to a console near you and discuss what I think will happen by the time January rolls around. And while I still believe the Wii is a fad and Sony has some work to do, my conclusions may surprise you.

Generally speaking, it's Microsoft that has the most to worry about this holiday season. I believe the Xbox 360 will take the day when this whole console battle is over, but all in all, it looks like the next few months will be tough.

A quick glimpse at the Gamestop release calendar will tell you everything you need to know for this holiday season. In a word, the games lineup is mediocre -- at best. Sure, games like Call of Duty 4, Assassin's Creed, and Mass Effect will be hitting shelves, but only the latter will be exclusive to the Xbox 360. And to be quite honest, it's the exclusive titles that will shape this holiday season.

Microsoft has already done what it had to do -- get Halo 3 out the door and enjoy unprecedented hardware and software revenue. In fact, the release of Halo 3 solidified the company as a major player in this business for years to come. But the main problem with its strategy of releasing the game so early is the lack of true hardware-sellers. Sure, Mass Effect looks neat, but is it on par with a game like Halo, which is the main reason the majority of people bought an Xbox 360 in September? I doubt it.

Overall Xbox 360 outlook for the holiday season: mediocre.

I expect the Wii to have a huge holiday season once again. With Super Mario Galaxy around the corner, some are touting it as the biggest jump in the franchise since Super Mario 64.

All in all, I think it's safe to say that first-party franchises have always dominated Nintendo consoles, and the Wii is no different. And regardless of what you think about this, it works for Nintendo.

With an expected November 12th release date, Super Mario Galaxy couldn't come at a better time for Nintendo. Not only will it make every Nintendo fan jump for joy, it'll force parents to make a decision -- should I buy it for my kids now or use it as a gift for the holidays? I guarantee the majority of people will choose the latter.

Historically speaking, Mario games have always helped sell Nintendo consoles. And with the Wii hype dying down, Super Mario Galaxy is exactly what the company needs to stimulate sales and add some fuel to the dwindling fire of hype.

Overall Nintendo Wii outlook for the holiday season: strong

Sony Playstation 3

(Credit: CNET)

With Sony's decision to drop the price of the Playstation 3 to a far more affordable level, I believe the company will enjoy a significant surge in sales this holiday season. And while I have some issues with the upcoming catalog of games (it's a bit weak), it's strong enough to justify people spending their cash on the device.

As I mentioned above, the Wii will have a strong holiday season. Along those lines, the Wii will probably be sold out for much of the season and people will be standing in line once again. And for all of those who weren't able to pick up a Wii, the Playstation 3 will be the next logical choice.

Think about it: you're standing in line for a Wii and you're told it's sold out. Knowing all too well that your kids want a new video game console, the affordable Playstation 3 is sitting there for the taking. So, in a rush to get holiday shopping over with, you ask for the Sony console.

Now, will all Sony sales end up this way? Not a chance. In fact, you can probably expect a significant growth in sales from the price drop alone. But it certainly won't hurt that the Wii will be sold out again and the PS3 will not, will it?

Sony made the right move because, well, it had to at this point. Expect to see Sony surging in the numbers.

Overall Sony Playstation 3 outlook: moderate to strong

That only proves that a cnet blogger is a idiot thats all. He says games move systems...well who has the best variety games? For some reason he picks only Mass Effect to represent the 360 as if it hasn't been dropping AA - AAA tittles all year long  Then he goes on to say that exclusives will... who has the best exclusives out now? And I said that the Wii is kicking ass Hardware wise and it will continue to do so but software wise its still a mediocre machine. The 360 moved a ton of units this time last year with less AA - AAA tittles out with a higher price point....what do you think it will do this year?

once again madskillz drops the knowledge ..these kats still think gears of war just launched....they are waaaaaaaaay behind and off base..

EVERYBODY WHO WANTED AN XBOX GOT IT FOR GEARS OF WAR AND HALO 3 WHAT OTHER POWERHOUSE GAME DO YOU HAVE????

MASS EFFECT FAINT MOVING SYSTEMS LIKE HALO SO FORGET IT

You agree with anyone who is pro-Sony... the fact remains is without a Halo or Gears of War, the 360 was consistently beating the PS3 in sales. You were one of the main people on the board talking shit before the PS3 was released about how it would come out and destroy the competition.

The truth is no System has been in last place and "won" the console war.. the PS3 would have to start doubling 360 sales in order to catch up and pass the 360.

Funny thing is last gen.. the Sony boys had the weakest graphical system and they said its all about games not graphics, now you lay your hat on the graphical power of the PS3. Last gen the PS2 had monster sales and you bragged about that.. now you are satisfied that your "monster" system performed similar to the shitbox 360/Xbox 3fixme.

From arrogant elitist industry leaders to defensive, angry, "wait-and see" apologists. Oh how the mighty Sony fanboy has fallen....:smh::smh::smh:

props to you sir.

i believe he means a list of holiday exclusives

aside from halo 3, which will probably still move consoles in the holiday cause some parents are waiting for xmas to buy his kid the halo 3 he wants..

but while you look at the list of games coming out, there are a lot, jericho (i downloaded this and played the demo last night, very cool and interesting), cod4, army of two, assasins creed, etc all for both systems so thats not a factor, just pick a system, any of the two ps3 or 360 will do

the other big AAA titles your talking about for 360, have already arrived and if they were to sell systems they already did so, halo 3 would trump their purpose of sale, those titles only add to 360 value once you own the 360

mario anything, mario takes a shit, mario nose picking chronicles will sell, it also has raving rabbids which is has become a huge hit and has a cult following with massive promotion, the wii zapper that comes with another nintendo console seller, a shooter version of zelda to open up doors for call of duty (not so big a seller on nintendo) with zapper capability as well as resident evil chronicles that has people talking and wanting to shoot zombies with the wii zapper

then you also have the adult market looking to get their hands on a wii in anticipation of another console seller between december and february, the wiifit

they also announced an upcoming pokemon rpg (not for this year), pokemon alone brought nintendo 15 billion dollars, once that releases after some low console sales, that will spike software and hardware sales

the wii is also a party/family friendly console, so add more sales to wiiplay for the extra controller

i play the wii less than the 360, but the wii is one fad that will last for quite a while especially this holiday...

microsoft is doing their thing proving themselves and adding titles, ps3 is loosing titles and but still has a list of

like the article said, if your not looking to get one for your kid, its most likely a winner as a gift

ps3's price is one thing but they need to start promoting games not spiderman 3 the movie, rachet and clank may help (i played the demo, didnt care for it, never did like rachet games) and haze i believe is their only exclusives, while its new they need to add some promotion or something to haze

you know whats funny, if you look at this thread there are people jumping up high fiving each other now that gears and halo came out like M$ is not going to make any more games for 2008

there is a long ass list of known games coming out for 360 ps3 and wii and there is a even larger list of games flying under the radar that can easily turn into huge hits, nobody expected gears to do as well as it did.

All the former PS2 exclusives like Devil May Cry, Smackdown vs Raw, and a few others are now multiplatform. Assassins Creed was going to be a PS3 exclusive but it's multiplatform now. Most game developers perfer the xbox 360 over the PS3.

What? I put exactly what you put...
Yes I said it sold. I didn't say they had strong or great sales. I just said it sold, which it did. What they had they sold. They weren't just sitting on the shelves like the PS3 was. They had a shortage.

The day after Christmas PS3's were readily available and no one was buying them. They two months this year where they didn't even break the 100,000 mark. And look at September, XBOX 360 and the Wii both do over 500,000 units and Sony finally beat the GBA and only got 100,000.

What helped MS was they had consitently good games coming out and XBOX Live.

Remember when Sony said that the first 5 million would sell even without any games? have they even hit that number yet?

How about that 2 million at launch and 4 million by the end of the year only to just barely get 1 million by january and then they said that was their goal all along?

Gotta love that Sony arrogance.

Seriously.

Next year I'm looking forward to Alan Wake and a list of other games they got coming. And true dat on Gears Of War. No one knew what that game was gonna be, and look what it did. There's gonna be a Gears 2.

Next years lineup is looking good.

Thats the truth.:smh:

in addition, Microsoft did a smart thing and got a year head start. So when it comes to developing stages regarding each platform. People are at least a year into understanding the XBox as well as PC Developers have an understanding since the 360 uses a lot of the saame Direct X API.

2008 is when the war really kicks off. It is way way too early for anybody to be talking shit, whether its 360 Wii or PS3. PERIOD:hmm:

Gotta love that Sony arrogance.

Yeah they talk mo shit than Mayweather.

“Beating us for a short moment is like accidentally winning a point from a Shihan (Karate master), and Microsoft is still not a black belt. Just like with their operating systems, they might come out with something good around the third generation of their release.”

“I believe we made the most beautiful thing in the world. Nobody would criticize a renowned architect’s blueprint that the position of a gate is wrong. It’s the same as that.”

“Microsoft shoots for the moon. Sony shoots for the sun.”

"This time, Microsoft has stated clearly that it is going after PlayStation. However, they're going not after the PlayStation 3, but the PlayStation 2. They were looking at 2, and that's why Xbox 360 became like that."

“With the PS3, our intentions have been to create a machine with supercomputer calculation capabilities for home entertainment.”

PS3 is “for consumers to think to themselves ‘I will work more hours to buy one’. We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else.”

“The PS3 will instill discipline in our children and adults alike. Everyone will know discipline.”

“Microsoft is trailing behind us, but they are not a threat. They are good at improving [on products], but we will be advancing to the next level with revolutionary technology.”

“We’re not going to equip the PS3 with a HDD by default, because no matter how much capacity we put in it, it won’t be enough.”

Ken Kutaragi has now once again commented on how he views the launch of the PS3 and what the PS3 really is, though am starting to suspect that even Sony doesn’t know what the PS3 is about anymore. Speaking in an interview with Electronic Engineering Times Asia, Ken Kutaragi said of the PlayStation 3, “Though sold as a game console, what will in fact enter the home is a Cell-based computer.”

He continued, “The model image for the Cell-based network may be the Internet: servers around the world form one virtual 'computer,' and each PC accesses it. Application programs can no longer directly access the hardware; instead they will have to be written in high-level, object-oriented language. The Cell processor will completely change the concept of programming. I am sure that a technology revolution is about to occur, not only within Sony but throughout the digital consumer electronics industry.”

His most interesting comment was maybe this one “If processors of high performance and wide bandwidth like the Cell were linked together without sufficient security, a worldwide system crash could occur with one attack.”

He has already been compared to Comical Ali (Former Iraqi Information Minister), and I can already hear it “there is no xbox”. But despite all the people criticizing him for his craziness I can’t help to like the guy more and more. I have always liked people with a “colorful personality”, and Ken seems to have nicked the whole f*****g rainbow.

When people walk into a store for a holiday purchase of a game system they don't ask what good games have just come out for this system. They ask what good games are on this system. The 360 has hands down the best lineup out of the three consoles.

Infact the 360 has them in abundant numbers over the other 2 systems. A great percentage of games that are on the PS3 can be found and played on the 360 at a cheaper price. This will affect holiday sales also. Then once you drop down to the games that can only be found on one of those two consoles the 360 has a higher quality lineup.

mario anything, mario takes a shit, mario nose picking chronicles will sell, it also has raving rabbids which is has become a huge hit and has a cult following with massive promotion, the wii zapper that comes with another nintendo console seller, a shooter version of zelda to open up doors for call of duty (not so big a seller on nintendo) with zapper capability as well as resident evil chronicles that has people talking and wanting to shoot zombies with the wii zapper

Like I said before it has mediocre software that doesn't move a bunch of units. Look at the numbers if you don't believe me. It has an install base equal or more then the 360 yet more games released on 360 are monster sellers while on Wii only Nintendo first party games really see this type of success.

i play the wii less than the 360, but the wii is one fad that will last for quite a while especially this holiday...

I'm sure its going to last but still the software doesn't match the 360's or even the PS3's at this point. They need to step their game up something serious or the system will continue to be a system for casual gamers and won't be taken serious by the hardcore crowd. Which is actually a very bad thing

ps3's price is one thing but they need to start promoting games not spiderman 3 the movie, rachet and clank may help (i played the demo, didnt care for it, never did like rachet games) and haze i believe is their only exclusives, while its new they need to add some promotion or something to haze

I think Sony has pretty much given up on this year as everything seems to be geared towards 2008. I think they'll take what they can get this holiday season and then have a crazy marketing push in 2008 in hopes of turning things around

PERIOD:hmm:
Should've been here all last year before the PS3 hit the shelves and took up residence. It was just like Mr. Motivator said. Everytime we would have an XBOX 360 conversation, here came Matt357 and the Blu-ray Bandits telling how great the vaporware, PS3 was and they had never played it.

It was pathetic. Now they coming in playing the victim like the 360 users were harrassing them. It's quite funny actually.

I just enjoy all the back-peddling and plea copping they are doing. They were all beating their chests and talking mad shit. Now that PS3 is in last place, they are besides themselves, lashing out and shit.

Like I said before it has mediocre software that doesn't move a bunch of units. Look at the numbers if you don't believe me. It has an install base equal or more then the 360 yet more games released on 360 are monster sellers while on Wii only Nintendo first party games really see this type of success.

Pay no attention to jagi, he's just an unbiased Sony fanboy. Look at his sig. He bought a 360 even though as he has stated, he clearly hates MS.

Seriously.

Next year I'm looking forward to Alan Wake and a list of other games they got coming. And true dat on Gears Of War. No one knew what that game was gonna be, and look what it did. There's gonna be a Gears 2.

Next years lineup is looking good.
Too Human is actually looking better now. I think this game may actually do some numbers if it gets a good coat of polish before release

Yes sir!

I'm on that Too Human also. And Fable 2. then factor in UT 3, GTA 4, and all the other games coming out. MS is in fine shape. Sony has a good short list of games, with MGS 4 and FF 13 (if it comes out next year)

WIll they be system sellers? MGS will, but FF 13? Who knows? It's more of a niche game. I'm a FF fan and have been one since the NES, but I am not buying a pS3 just to play that.

Call me crazy but I think the game that will propel the PS3 into a higher level of sales is actually Little Big Planet.

But the games I'm looking forward to the most for the 360 next year are Too Human, NG2, GTA IV, and this one Left 4 Dead  and hopefully Gears 2 will come out sometime near the end of the year.

Little Big Planet is a strange but interesting game. I'll give you that. Could be a sleeper, while everyone is focusing on MGS 4 and FF 13.

There's some game EA is working on with a brother as the lead. It was on the cover of Game Informer. Looks promising.

i had a longer point but i lost the page so i'll sum it up

hard to compare teh wii to the 360 and ps3 when you talk about halo, gow, ffxiii etc

wii cant run those games

but they can make fun games (notice how when the 360 and ps3 is mentioned fun is one of the few words used) wii can make alot of games and most developers didnt plan to make games for them shrugging them off

now the guys who made oblivion made a dumbed down version of their engine for other companies to develop games for the wii

and metroid showed other companies to get off their lazy asses you can make good looking and good playable games.. 2008 is a good year for all three systems

the war it would seem will last longer than most expected and will eventually see saw every month or quarter, i still stand by that all systems will eventually just do well and it will be a battle of the ip's

nintendo is probably just content making profit off their console, increasing their base, maintaining their base, locking down the casual market and is probably happy letting 360 and ps3 fight it out while they cruise as the system that is a good second system for hard core gamers with a 360 or ps3 or for families who dont want alot of violence on their kids tv..

as for which games some one wants to play "what do you have out" "what is out now"

i think halo 3 proves that the now is important, the people who say they are waiting for mgs4 to drop are also on the NOW factor, those people would already buy a system but haven't cause of the now factor

on here people have said all year, i aint buying shit, until halo 3 drops, or until mgs4 drops..

the smart shopper that your talking about asks what else does the system have, what has come out worth playing

but this is holiday shopping, we are talking about the impulsive shopper

i agree with what you said about sony basically conceding 2007 to microsoft and banking on 2008 to make a move

i knew that would rattle the microsoft defense team a bit.. :D

i'm following that too human as well, i'll take ut3 on ps3, gta4 will be mainly my son, i'll play it, but i prob wont finish it.. after a while it just gets tiresome

on the 360 side i'm more looking forward to dead space

as for GoW 2? cool another shooter from microsoft, didnt see that coming...
after all the sequels and shooters that one plays on 360 and ps3 thats where i pick up the wii for a while

as for little bigplanet :dunno: i think sony is shooting themselves in the foot by looking for that killer app, they need to do what 360 is doing in a way and what they did with the ps2, just drop games, many games, let the people decide you'd be surprised what word of mouth will do if you like a game enough..

all the games we are talking about are practically being shoved down our throats

i just got bioshock from gamefly today, but i'm not interested having halo 3, orange box, warhawk and metroid 3, bioshock is just nto a must play title for me, maybe during the gaming off season when i've played everything else already

but one thing about little big planet is that its new at least and different, like portal

oh and if uncharted: drakes fortune does well that might help sony as well this season, depends on how the game actually is
