NBC taps Liman for 'Knight Rider'
Network readying two-hour backdoor pilot
By JOSEF ADALIAN

NBC is bringing back "Knight Rider," tapping Doug Liman to produce a "Transformers"-inspired reworking of the 1980s hit action-drama series about a man and his indestructible supercar.

Peacock is readying a two-hour backdoor pilot for the project, with tentative plans to air it as a telepic later this season. Liman is open to the idea of directing, assuming his feature sked allows. If the telepic clicks, a new-model "Knight Rider" could be on the air as early as next fall.

Dave Andron ("Raines") is writing the pilot script and will serve as supervising producer alongside exec producers Liman and Dave Bartis ("The O.C.," "Heist") for Universal Media Studios and Dutch Oven Prods.

Success of "Transformers" had a role in inspiring NBC Entertainment chief Ben Silverman's decision to revive "Knight." The thinking is that smallscreen f/x have advanced to the point where it'd be feasible to have a weekly series in which cars shift shapes.

It's also likely the new show will explore the idea of "evil" cars to offset the heroic talking K.I.T.T. car of the original skein, which starred David Hasselhoff. That said, skein is expected to essentially remain focused on the story of a single man fighting for justice with the help of his superadvanced car.

There's also huge potential for advertiser integration. General Motors was all over "Transformers," and it's easy to see NBC striking a rich deal with a single automaker to serve as the exclusive auto brand for the new "Knight." It's understood preliminary talks have already begun.

Peacock is also veering from current conventional wisdom by moving forward with a telepic/backdoor pilot for "Knight." Nets rarely produce telepics with an eye on turning them into series anymore, in part because the telepic has essentially disappeared from the broadcast network scene.

But NBC execs no doubt feel "Knight Rider" is enough of a pre-sold brand to lure an audience. What's more, the telepic could serve as a good replacement for repeats come spring, perhaps replacing an encore of "Heroes" or "Bionic Woman."

"Knight" originally aired on NBC from 1982 until 1986, with Hasselhoff playing smooth crimefighter Michael Knight. A spinoff skein, "Team Knight Rider," aired in syndication during the 1997-98 season.

Project was put together by CAA and Adam Kolbrenner of Madhouse Entertainment.

Glen Larson created the original "Knight Rider" for Universal Television.

Man fuck that...WTF is up with BATTLESTAR GALACTICA???????????? Fuckin half the mufuckas on BIONIC WOMAN was from Battlestar. Fuckin Starbuck, Tiel and the lawyer that defended Baltar on trial.

probably cause david eick(one of the exec producers of BSG) is involved as is the head writer responsible for that wack-as-hell Birds of Prey show on the WB a long while back.. he probably was calling the ppl you mentioned saying"look i need a favor.." LOL

I aint mad. Good to old shyt with new technology if only for 3-5 shows till we get tired of it.

Hollywood is raping the 70-80's. They have NO new ideas so they just remake every thing. the 90's was pretty shit. Not much was classic from it. SO they take everything we loved and just remake it.

:smh::smh::smh:

They have the ideas, they just lack the balls to execute those ideas. They're scared to get fired.

Yea. Just like everything else it'll burn itself out. Sci-fi Channel will have a whole new set of shows in it's line up after all these shows fail.

Why does network television always do this? With the success of "one" show like "Heroes" they all dash to make a bunch of shows (that will suck ass) hoping to replicate the same results as the first show!

We saw the same thing with the "Jerry Springer" like talk shows in the 90's. Then we saw "Reality TV" shoot through the roof on every channel you can think of, only to half 99% of them canceled and only the original "Big 3" still standing i.e. "The Amazing Race, Big Brother, Survivor".

Last year the big 3 all had Alien type shows on to and eventually All 3 got canceled!

Now we see the 80's resurgence....Baw!

i dont kno about bionic woman being a hit, I thought the show was horrible. I think all the viewers from the first episode were just people who were curious to see how it was going to be, and now that its shown i doubt i'm the only one who isn't going to waste their time to watch another episode

everything old is new again.....maybe they can bring back a-team shit its pretty clear they will bring back a-team my bet if this telepic works and bw does well...a-team will be back but only on nbc b/c all the other networks will fuck it up..

I watched the premier mostly for the fact that its got Michelle Ryan in it, I'm in the UK so seein an british actress "attempt" to crack the american market is always entertaining.

In terms of plot, acting and potential storylines though I'm not sure what they're gonna do with it.

If they try and do the A-Team I'm gonna catch a flight and personally punch the guy who green lit that project.

That would be a fuckin disaster :hmm::smh::hmm:

knight rider might be cool but what trans am will they use? A-team maybe. but what nobodys would be willing to typecast themselves as the previous cast did.

All yall forgetting the two other classic shows

dont trip i know yall used to watch these shows too!

How about BJ and the Bear or The Fall Guy?

Someone could probably pull off a new Fall Guy. But if I see any way, shape or form of BJ and the Bear, I'm going to be done dealing for a while. :)

I'm wondering who thinks a Knight Rider revival is a good idea. It could work, but they've floated Knight Rider based shows/movies in the past and they didn't seem to catch on. But hey, stranger things have happened.

At least the article did mention Team Knight Rider, giving me limited proof that the show did in fact exist. All I remember about that show is the one guy had a truck that wouldn't listen to him but was always nice to one of the other drivers. Sadly, that was about the most interesting thing about that show.

Naw they better leave Air Wolf alone... Jan Micheal Vincent was that dude.

Mcguyver is fuckin tooo classic to update. Richard Dean Anderson made the show. Not what he could do. It was the actor that had the it factor.

you cant do the A-team without that crew..please dont fuck that classic up:smh:

Co-frakkin sign. That A-team crew was THE A-team crew. Bring out some b-listers I dont care. But you can't replicate the chemistry those dudes had.
