Honduran President Xiomara Castro has warned that Washington’s mass deportation plans could cost the United States its military foothold in her country.

In a New Year’s address broadcast on national television, Castro said Honduras would reconsider its cooperation with the U.S. if President Donald Trump follows through on plans to deport large numbers of Honduran migrants.

“Faced with a hostile attitude of mass expulsion of our brothers, we would have to consider a change in our policies of cooperation with the United States, especially in the military arena,” Castro said.

She pointed to the fact that the U.S. pays no rent for its bases in Honduras, adding that such installations “would lose all reason to exist in Honduras” under those circumstances.

The main U.S. presence in the country is Soto Cano Air Base in Comayagua, home to Joint Task Force Bravo. American troops have operated there for roughly four decades, with personnel numbers estimated between 500 and 1,500, primarily supporting counter-narcotics and humanitarian missions in the region.

Honduras’ foreign minister, Enrique Reina, said afterward that Castro had the authority to suspend the decades-old basing arrangement without approval from Congress, though he stressed that pulling U.S. forces from the base would not by itself stop Trump from carrying out deportations.

Castro also struck a conciliatory note, saying she hoped the incoming administration would be open to “dialogue, constructive and friendly,” and would avoid what she called unnecessary reprisals against migrants who she said make a significant economic contribution in the United States.

About five percent of Honduras’ population is estimated to live in the U.S. The country relies heavily on Washington as its largest trading partner and a source of humanitarian aid, making the threat a high-stakes gamble as both governments calculate their next move.
 
"Another person has died in Trump's concentration camps. 47-year-old Julian Curo-Churata was from Peru. He died on Sept. 29 after he was imprisoned for three months in Richwood Correctional Center in Louisiana. That camp is run by LaSalle Corrections. There's no cause of death listed. " In these press releases, ICE always attempts to describe the people it is killing as criminals, and lists out things they've allegedly done wrong. All they had on Curo-Churata, though, was that he was once found "driving with expired vehicle registration."
The press release also says that he offered to depart voluntarily, but an immigration "judge" told him no. Why? It does not say. By our count at

, Curo-Churata is at least the 67th person to die in immigration custody as of January 2025. He should be alive. May he rest in peace.
