Joseph “Joe” Thomas Moore, 38, a father of two, died outside the office on Friday, Aug. 28, after learning he would lose his job, the newspaper reported.
Moore died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the neck, and his death was ruled a suicide, Philadelphia Department of Public Health spokesperson Jason Brooks told Daily Voice on behalf of the Medical Examiner’s Office.
His family has disputed the suicide ruling, according to The Post.
Moore had wanted a law enforcement career since he was a teenager, according to The Post.
“Policing is in my blood,” Moore wrote to a Pennsylvania town’s supervisors in 2020, according to the newspaper. “There is no other career for me.”
He joined ICE last year after struggling to advance his career. Two law enforcement agencies had fired him and others had rejected him, The Post reported.
The IRS dismissed him from a criminal-investigator position after a background check raised concerns about his candor, according to the report.
ICE has maintained that it uses proper vetting and that some recruits begin training while background checks are completed, The Post reported.
