A Colombian national illegally living in Boston was sentenced during a fraught hearing in federal court to two years and nine months in prison for stealing a U.S. citizen’s identity and using it to perpetuate more than $400,000 in benefits fraud.

Lina Maria Orovio-Hernandez, convicted in federal court in Boston in February of a slew of fraud charges, dismissed her lawyer last month and penned a handwritten letter to federal Judge Patti B. Saris decrying her charges and conviction.

At the sentencing hearing Friday afternoon Orovio-Hernandez brought a woman she wanted to use as a witness to challenge some evidence against her — even though her trial is long over. She bawled in court so loudly that it disrupted proceedings and earned an admonishment from Judge Saris, who repeatedly informed her that this was a sentencing hearing and not the venue to retry or appeal her case.

“For more than 20 years, the Defendant lied and stole from the American people,” prosecutors wrote in a Tuesday sentencing memo. “Far from leading a law-abiding life, the Defendant was a prolific criminal whose decades-long deception was only uncovered recently.”

Orovio-Hernandez, 60, was convicted of three counts of receiving stolen government money or property and one count each of false representation of a Social Security number, making a false statement in an application for a United States passport, aggravated identity theft, and fraudulent voting.

Judge Saris sentenced Orovio-Hernandez to 33 months in prison and ordered her to pay $404,194 in restitution.

Orovio-Hernandez, a Colombian national, stole the identity of a U.S. citizen born in Puerto Rico and using it to apply for and get nine Massachusetts state IDs to bilk taxpayers of $750,000 in federal benefits and even vote in the 2024 presidential election, according to the sentencing memo.

Specifically, Orovio-Hernandez fraudulently obtained more than $259,000 in Section 8 rental assistance for her Jamaica Plain apartment; over $100,000 Supplemental Security Income (SSI) disability benefits; and more than $40,000 in SNAP benefits.

Her application in 2024 for a REAL ID, which requires more serious verification of identity, is when authorities caught on to her scams, according to court documents. That same year she also applied for a U.S. Passport.

Prosecutors recommended a prison term of five years and five months. They wrote in their memo that “a message must be sent to the Defendant and others who would steal the identity of an American citizen to obtain IDs, improperly receive federal benefits intended for the neediest members of society, and undermine the integrity of our elections that these crimes are unacceptable and carry serious penalties.”

“For more than two decades, this defendant treated the identity of an American citizen as a personal entitlement — exploiting it to enrich herself, evade the law and access government programs and privileges reserved for lawful residents and citizens of this country,” said U.S. Attorney Leah Foley. “This was a deliberate, calculated fraud scheme carried out with blatant disregard for American taxpayers, our public institutions and the integrity of our elections.

“This case is exactly why we launched the Benefit & Voter Fraud Team in response to the rampant fraud being uncovered across Massachusetts. These are not victimless crimes — and those who steal public benefits, exploit stolen identities and undermine public trust should expect federal prosecution,” Foley continued.

Orovio-Hernandez, whose prison number is 60337-511, is housed at the Donald D. Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls, Rhode Island.

So they said, we're going to stop supporting Democrats and we're going to support The reincarnation of Hitler. That makes sense how's that working for them now? How is that working for all of us now?

It makes no sense to abandon your vote for the person with a piece of paper and instead vote for the person with the gun aimed at all of us because you don't think the person with a piece of paper is working hard enough for you. Congratulations, you played yourself
And that's what I'm saying! I hate that I have to hold my nose and vote for the democrats. But it is so much better than the alternative. And these cats come in trying to muddy the waters with that different side of the same coin bullshyt. Never had to worry about my voting rights with one party. Never had to worry about being a citizen with one party. But shyt like this is never brought up. I gotta think there are people smarter than me having these talks, but it NEVER comes up! Which makes me ?uestion where are you getting your money from?

Bruh. This is Willie Horton all over again. They are going to try to Justify voter restrictions and Ice funding on one case of voter fraud. Statistically irrelevant anecdote.

I don't know about the Willie Horton case, but if anything this is going to be the poster child/case for getting rid of Section 8 and other benefits. They don't care about the voter fraud because she voted for this administration.

George Bush used Willie Horton to win the election against Dukakis. It gave him a mandate in his eyes to push the mass incarceration since Regan. It was so effective it gave republicans the gameplan.

Funny how pedophilia, fraud and serial killing crimes are ALWAYS left out of the stats they like to bring up!

To quote the illustrious Nino Brown Uzi-s aren't made in Harlem. Not one of us owns a poppy field. But MS-13 are always the ones mulleing drugs from Mexico? The amount of drugs in this country to have been mulled by people into this country, there aren't enough people in Mexico

“The Iranian negotiating team will suspend ‘talks and the exchange of texts through mediators,’” semiofficial news agency Tasnim reported.

President Donald Trump told NBC News he had not been informed of the decision ahead of time.

“It’s an appropriate thing to say, because they’re better negotiators than they are fighters,” he said in a brief call. “But they haven’t informed us of that.”

“It doesn’t mean we’re going to go and start dropping bombs all over there,” Trump added. “We’ll keep the blockade.”

Tasnim earlier reported that Tehran would consider a full closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping route that carried a fifth of the world’s oil supply before the war, and choking other waterways including the Bab el-Mandeb Strait with the aim of punishing Israel and its supporters.

The Iranian government did not comment on the report, although earlier Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi posted on X that a “ceasefire between Iran and the U.S. is unequivocally a ceasefire on all fronts, including in Lebanon.”

“The U.S. and Israel are responsible for the consequences of any violation,” he added.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. On Friday, Trump said he would soon decide on a proposed deal to extend an ostensible ceasefire agreed to in early April.

Oil prices surged more than $6 per barrel on after Tasnim’s report.

The U.S. military and Iran exchanged strikes over the weekend and into Monday — the latest outburst of violence amd the truce. .

Despite the truce, Israel has been pressing ahead with an offensive in Lebanon, with its forces marking their deepest incursion into the country in 26 years over the weekend. On Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered attacks on the Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs of Beirut, signalling further escalation of a war.

On Feb. 28, the U.S. and Israel launched the war that has since killed thousands of people, mostly in Iran and Lebanon, as well as 13 U.S. service members. It has also sent global energy prices soaring after Iran responded by effectively shutting down the Strait of Hormuz.

Negotiations over a broader agreement had been ongoing amid disagreements on several issues, including the future of Iran’s nuclear and missile programs.
