MOVIES ~ Any of ya'll seen any good (or shitty) movies in recent weeks/months? Post reviews, feedback, movie news, trailers, recommendations, etc ...

@tallblacknyc

I've been saving Paradise season 2 for a few friends & family to update their flashdrives this year. They asked me how the season was, and I said it was worth seeing. Noted that it was a good enough balance of the established characters, while introducing new ones.

When I update my mom's flashdrive this spring I'm gonna give her PONIES, Dark Winds, Paradise, The Night Manager (season 2), etc.

The running joke was why did it take so long (almost 10 years) between seasons 1 and 2 of The Night Manager, lol? Thankfully it was worth the wait.

She watched season 1 in the early-2020s, and pops and I watched it a few years back.

I don’t know what that is but I look at the trailer after I finish paradise

Good cast and it feels / looks big budget.

I'm trying to see if I can locate the Indian adaptation online too. I checked out the trailer in recent months, and it looks exciting too.

The Night Manager is a British spy thriller television serial based on the 1993 novel by John le Carré and adapted by David Farr. The six-part first series, directed by Susanne Bier and starring Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie, Olivia Colman, Tom Hollander, David Harewood and Elizabeth Debicki, began broadcasting on BBC One on 21 February 2016.

The Night Manager was nominated for thirty-six awards and won eleven, including two Primetime Emmy Awards (for director Bier and music composer Victor Reyes) and three Golden Globe Awards (for Hiddleston, Colman, and Laurie). In April 2024, The Night Manager was renewed for a second and third series by BBC One and Amazon Prime Video, with Hiddleston and Colman reprising their roles, and Georgi Banks-Davies directing. The second series premiered in the UK on 1 January 2026.

In 2023, an Indian adaptation was released.

Primitive War
2025

8/10

This film popped up on Hulu back in February, I saved it and later went too watch it and it was gone.

I discovered Disney had screwed up and mistakenly uploaded before they were allowed too due to their contract. They put it back up on Hulu on April 1st. I watched it last night on the road.

I’m not gonna go into it, but this film is everything the Jurassic Park films is not. If you wanted to see Dinosaurs in the JP films tear into people and eat them, this film delivers. You get to see people ripped apart and gobbled up by the dinosaurs.

The film is a hybrid of the classic Arnold Schwarzenegger ‘Predator’ and recent ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’. The film takes place during the Vietnam War with a Special Operations Team engaging with dinosaurs. They got maximum firepower and still get their Ass’ kicked.

VFX/SFX and CGI of the dinosaur look good. I went into it expecting ‘Arrowverse’ SFX, but they did a good job with this film. Violence is graphic. The film has an all-star cast of B and D-List actors from familiar film/tv series.

There is plenty of action starting at the 30 minute mark and going to the final scene of the film. Minimal drama/talk.

The film has become a sleeper hit and was grenlighted for a sequel earlier this year. Both films are based off existing books.

The film continues during the end credits roll giving insight on what will happen in the sequel.

Definitely looking forward to it.

Synopsis

A US Army reconnaissance unit ("Vulture Squad") is sent to find a missing platoon and discovers they are not alone, facing dinosaurs.

They Will Kill You

I had no clue about this, because I avoid trailers if I can. A co-worker told me about it.

It was dope seeing Zazie in this type of movie. Having a woman and a black woman at that. Definitely Quentin inspired. There's not much suspense, it's more cartoonish. New York was like Gotham.

Enjoyable not very complicated action movie. Had some nice "kills" and fight scenes.

The Killer

I haven't seen this since Netflix still did DVD's. I missed Hard Boiled back in theaters a couple of months ago because of the snow. I didn't want to miss this.

John Woo was a favorite of mine as a kid and I saw everything after A Better Tomorrow on, not giving a fuck about subtitles.Chow Yun Fat and Woo is like Jason Statham and Guy Ritchie.

I wanted to see if it still held up, since Woo has been so influential to modern action movies.

Well...it still does. It's still a dope movie.

Been binge watching that paradise series past few days finished season 1 already .. now a few episodes in of season 2… all the fuckery of pieces of shit was a chef kiss to my love of villains and pieces of shit.. just when you think 1 person is a shithead somebody else comes through and says hold my beer and upstage the previous piece of shits.. put a smile to my face.. oh yeah the main character is decent to..but fuck all that happy shit bring me the chaos of assholes.. more, more

Lol Great show....just finished the second season

Blood & Gold
2023

6/10

This film came up in my Netflix recommendations after I finished watching the Netflix series ‘The Madness’ last month. I watched it tonight on the road.

It’s an action, war drama taking place at the end of WW2. The film caught my eye cuz the trailer Netflix had gave it a Quentin Tarantino feel to it. While watching it, the film has similarities to his film ‘Inglorious Bastards’.

The film plays out like a classic spaghetti western with similarities to Clint Eastwood’s classic films revolving around ‘The Man With No Name’.

It kicks off immediately with action and keeps the pace until the end of the film. Plenty of ‘Shoot Em Ups’ and hand to hand combat which comes off believable and not like a ‘Jason Staham’ flick being over the top.

For the Militants, there is a scene at the end that will make you very happy.

Overall, it’s an entertaining film. If you looking for something different to watch, this will do.

The film is in German, Netflix has it dubbed in English.

Synopsis

Blood & Gold is a German action-thriller set in the final days of WWII, following a German deserter, Heinrich, who teams up with a young woman, Elsa, to fight a ruthless SS squad hunting for hidden Jewish gold in her village.

PRAISE: It's funny how some scams go on and on even the ones that i thought would become extinct due to extra layers of security. Cole is a master of the old debit card and phony card readers onto ATM machines scams. In fact he's too good at it which gets the attention of others and places blunt barriers in his way. Dane DeHaan does a very good job as Cole. Portraying a character that's smart, could be using his skills elsewhere but definitely guarded and then some. The rest of the cast also does very well with their roles with intense no nonsense portrayals including Sasha Calle as Sarah, Mamoudou Athie as Oscar, Jeffrey Donovan as Bilson, William Belleau as Doug, and Karina Gale as Anna. I liked that the movie put me on edge when it came to trust, seduction and dangerous characters. I liked how the movie slowly but surely evolved from something seemingly simple to more complicated and twisty. Director Rebecca Thomas gives the film a Michael Mann vibe which increased how much it easily flowed and how the more involving it became.

PROBLEMS: Some imagery lead to a predictable turn, but that turn was easily written off and I wondered why it was included. I wish there had been more character development for a couple of characters.I was pushed to suspend disbelief a few times. Some moments were to on the nose

The Drama

PRAISE: Im glad i was able to avoid the leaked script and far to spoiler filled reviews for this movie. There are definitely a number of people that won't get past the revelation in this movie. It is disturbing but I feel the movie really tried for the most part to make it and easier watch. The cast including Zendaya as Emma,Robert Pattinson as Charlie
Alana Haim as Rachel,Mamoudou Athie as Mike,Zoe Winters as Frances and
Hailey Gates as Misha all do a great job with their roles. I actually felt their frustrations and sadness at times. Can you stay in a relationship, actually marry someone who has revealed something very dark and disturbing about their past? Will you always wonder if that darkness is still in their minds eye waiting to get out? The film plays with the aforementioned in what I thought were interesting moments in the movie. There's also some funny parts about all of people connected to a wedding from the DJ to the menu planner. Im actually shocked something wasn't presented in the movie and found it interesting, maybe even relieved that it wasn't included. I liked how the movied asked if we are to judgemental of others.

PROBLEMS: It was clear as a sunny day what a character was feeling and was extremely disturbed by what was revealed so I couldn't get on board with the character just putting on a happy face and pushing forward. Now if a couple of scenes before the climax of the movie about love conquering all had been presented in a boldly dramatic way I would have bought into it. I can also say the same about another character who was clearly upset and angry about the revelation when I saw their prescense all i could blurt out was why are you here?

‘Extraction 3’ Set at Netflix With Chris Hemsworth and Idris Elba Returning

By Rebecca Rubin
April 8, 2026

Chris Hemsworth and Idris Elba will reunite for “Extraction 3.”

Netflix has greenlit a third installment in the action series, with Sam Hargrave returning to direct and David Weil on board to write the screenplay. The story is based on the graphic novel “Ciudad” by Ande Parks. Production is set to start over the summer, according to Deadline which broke the news.

Netflix is concealing the logline for “Extraction 3.” In the first film, Hemsworth puts himself through the wringer as former black ops mercenary Tyler Rake, who embarks on a mission to save a drug lord’s kidnapped son. Things go awry when he’s double-crossed. Hemsworth’s character seemingly died at the end. But the movie became very popular on Netflix when it debuted in spring 2020, so the streamer revived him for another round. The sequel picks up as Tyler Rake, back from the brink of death, gets hired to rescue a ruthless gangster’s family from prison. It’s safe to assume the threequel will see Tyler Rake in another precarious situation as he tries to liberate the kin of some dangerous man. Golshifteh Farahani is also returning…

Outcome

PRAISE: This dramedy about a two-time Oscar-winning action star named Reef Hawk (Keanu Reeves) who is paranoid and then some about protecting his image and people forgetting his accomplishments gets thrown a curve ball when someone threatens to release a private video that he thinks could end his career. When Director and writer Jonah Hill along with co Writer Ezra Woods include jokes about reality TV ,the Hollywood machine and personas the movie worked for me. The dramatic moments were the best moments in the film, especially when Hawk is confronted about his vices and only seeing himself.
Reeves does well in the aforementioned scenes as his character goes on an apology tour. The really standout scene that the film definitely needed more of includes a great dramatic performance from Martin Scorsese as Reef’s first manager.

PROBLEMS: Far to many obnoxious characters coupled with painfully unfunny moments that I wish could have ended quickly. Some scenes felt as fake as the green screen used in the movie. I felt the look isn't this clever scenes were extremely repetitive. Sure I get that Hill wanted to make fun of cancel culture but a more subtle approach would have worked better for me.

Good luck, have fun, don’t die…. The punch in the face was worth the watch alone… when you see it you know what I’m talking about.. I laughed hysterically for 5 mins straight off that punch… than rewind it again laughed some more… than watched to the end of movie.. went back to the punch and laughed some more… oh yeah the rest of the movie was weird but entertaining… it was an ok watch.. but the punch is what made the movie to me

Wait wtf????!!!!

One division hit hard is Marvel, which is losing staff from both New York and Burbank, across most areas of the organization including film and tv production, comics, franchise, finance, and legal. That includes the nearly the entire Academy Award-winning visual development team at Marvel Studios.

These are the artists, illustrators, character designers, environment designers and other technical specialists responsible for the look of Marvel’s film and television productions, from The Avengers to Guardians of the Galaxy to Daredevil. Many had been with Marvel for a decade or more.

The Walt Disney Company announced massive layoffs this week to “streamline operations,” according to a memo from new CEO Josh D’Amaro. The cuts will affect about one thousand employees across all the arms of Disney’s media holdings, including studios, TV networks, sports, and experiences.

Nearly the entire department has been let go, with only a skeleton crew of full time production staff remaining in place to coordinate the hiring of resources on a per-project basis. Reports and social media posts discussing the layoffs began circulating on public and private channels mid-day Tuesday.

Sources familiar with the layoffs say this was largely due to the previously-announced reduction in the Marvel Studios production slate, along with the general cost-cutting and workforce reductions announced by Disney. It does not appear that these specific jobs were eliminated for reasons involving AI, which has been a driver behind other shakeups in the creative industries.

Some of the visual development artists will transition from full-time to contractor status on a per-project basis. Disney’s move comes amid a massive wave of job losses by creative professionals across the entertainment, advertising, videogame and media production industries.

Looks like they planning to go with this for future productions..
