Listen. Do not send your kids to college if you don’t have a plan. Don’t accumulate that debt unless they are truly ready to put in the work.
There are more college students nationwide than job available. That number doesn’t surprise me at all and I have been speaking that to my students every semester for several years now.
Go to college with a plan that’s greater than the college experience.
1) identify what you want to do.
2) commit to your goal (meaning no major switch two years in)
3) build a network by communicating with professors and getting involved with work study related to your field of study
4) internship are MANDATORY, not optional. In this climate, many internships are direct pipelines to employment.
5) consider graduate school if you did not accomplish points #3 and #4. Graduate is a perfect place to gain internship opportunities while working on advance degrees.
6) keep your GPA at least 3.0. GPA are only significant if you are going to graduate school.
The days of going to college to have fun is now nothing more than an expensive vacation from home for many.
