NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — A multi-story building under construction in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, collapsed Friday, leaving people trapped.

Rescue workers are digging through the rubble. The building was in an area of Nairobi known as South C, according to the Kenya Red Cross, which said in a statement that a multi-agency response team was at the scene “managing the situation.”

Building collapses are common in Nairobi, where housing is in high demand and unscrupulous developers often bypass regulations or simply violate building codes.
After eight buildings collapsed and killed 15 people in Kenya in 2015, the presidency ordered an audit of buildings across the country to see if they were up to code. The National Construction Authority found that 58% of the buildings in Nairobi were unfit for habitation.

They don’t graduate engineers in Kenya?
Yes, you would be shocked at just how many top-notch universities exist in Kenya. It's not that Africans can't build a stable, well-engineered and safe building. The problem is that the economies and pay scales in most of Africa are so underfunded that graft and corruption is often the order of the day. Underpaid construction supervisors make side deals to accept lower graded than specified steel, wire, and cement mixes in exchange for kickbacks. People often die due to such practices. I, to this day, have never riden an elevator (lift) in Kenya because, unlike ameriKKKa, there are no mandatory elevator inspections here. The building owners are left to police themselves in making sure elevators are safe and in compliance. I've seen elevators here that you'd not trust to send your unescorted groceries in.

And then, there's that other issue that plagues all of Africa. Brain drain. Most Africans want to get out of here so badly, they'll sometimes attempt to cross oceans on a raft. Hide in the wheel wells of airliners and the like. So, you know that once most Africans manage to earn an engineering or other prized degree that opens international doors of immigration, you can color them GONE! So mostly, what remains are the lowest common denominators, who don't have the skills to uplift a continent. It's a gloomy situation.
