How are you planning for retirement at this point in life?

Almost got lock in on annuities about 3 years ago due to some self serving advice and ignorance on my part. After about a year got out from under that traps. Doing much better now.
Nothing wrong with single premium immediate annuities. Those are just like buying a pension basically. Lots of shady salesmen in the annuity industry trying to sell indexed annuities and other crap unfortunately.

Christmas came early this year for a man who well deserves it.

An 88-year-old Army veteran has gone viral after the heartbreaking revelation that he works five days a week at a local grocery store to help make ends meet, sparking a wave of generosity from kindhearted shoppers who rallied to raise well over a million dollars for his retirement.

Ed Bambas, a cashier at the Meijer store in Brighton, Michigan, lost his pension 13 years ago and despite his age is now forced to work 40 hours a week — a full-time schedule — because “he doesn’t have enough income.”

“I retired from General Motors in ’99. In 2012, they went bankrupt and they took my pension away from me,” Bambas told Australian influencer Samuel Weidenhofer, according to a video posted to Instagram

You’re Canadian, right? What do you think about retiring in Canada as opposed to to the US? I know, a broad question.

Yeah - westcoast just outside of Vancouver.

That's a good question. I'd say if you have friends or family in Canada ... it might be worth a look. Also ... your U.S. dollar would go much further long-term here, considering it's worth way more than ours. I.E. - save up a grip & it would go even further than expected. I'd say to better familiarize yourself with certain cities or provinces, search their subreddits on REDDIT. See what people are talking about in those cities. People talking about the good and bad, pros and cons ... current events and news stories at times, etc.

It's sort of a can't win situation locally. Rent prices are high, but real estate in general is ridiculous. I bought in 2009, and even then I thought the price was too high. Thought I was fucking up and making a terrible decision. There were a few years where the assessed value stayed relatively stable. No gains or decreases. A few years wherein the value went down by say 5 - 10%, but the years with assessed value gains were in the 10 - 20%+ range.

The assessed value now is nearly 2.5 times what was paid for it. No upgrades or renovations made at all. Land value is what it's all about. It would be nice to sell and make a nice "profit" on what was paid back in the day. But it's not appealing using all that sales price towards an overpriced new place. It wouldn't leave much left over, if anything.

I've been thinking about it for several years. My Dad was Canadian but he didn't pass it on to me. He was born in the US but his mom was from Canada. I looked it up and it seemed too difficult. Then the other day, I found out about Bill C-3 which would include me so it's really starting to light a fire under me. I've decide I'm at least gonna apply for my citizenship card.

Nice. That's a good idea to apply for the citizenship card. Just to have it in case you might need it in the future.

I'm thinking about retiring in my late-50s (around 58 - 60) in the late-2030s. Want to be able to maximize my pension.

I've thought about relocating to a smaller city. My brother moved to a small place in the 2000s and bought a place around 2017 or 2018. He doesn't miss the rat race of the ever-expanding big city. Said it felt claustrophobic some years back getting caught in afternoon rush hour traffic. He hadn't dealt with it for YEARS and was used to getting around in quick commutes, or on foot / bike. His way of life is way less stressful compared to his peers locally.
