Following the January 15 debut of Episodes 1 and 2, the series was met with review bombing on aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, with its audience rating currently 43% — just under half the score awarded by critics (88%). Sadly, following the premiere of Episode 3, "Vitus Reflux," on January 22, things have gone from bad to worse for this seemingly ill-fated Star Trek series.

Tulsa King is at #4, with South Park at #3, UFC at #2, and the Billy Bob Thornton-led neo-Western series, Landman, at the #1 spot.
Despite the backlash, critics have proven much more receptive to this new entry in one of TV's biggest franchises. In Samantha Coley's official review of the new series for Collider, she awarded a near-perfect 9/10 score, saying, "Starfleet Academy is the best example of what Star Trek can and should be doing in this modern era — effortlessly inclusive, compelling, and innovative." She added, "While the core tenets of the franchise are ever-present, the series breaks the mold in all the best ways. For fans who loved Star Trek's recent animated offerings for their bold willingness to do something different, Starfleet Academy is once again pushing the boundaries of this universe for the better and building a world worth returning to."…

Star Trek exists in more than one world. It exists in the fantasy of science fiction - weird and wonderful things that play unimaginable possibilities of exploration and human endeavor. But it also exists in the fantasy of human beings, the perfection of human beings, the exploration that human beings have made since the dawn of time and the continuing exploration - physically mentally and morally. It’s that aspect of Star Trek that I’ve always loved, to look at something physically that doesn’t exist now by these talented writers & designers but also to tackle the eternal human questions the agonies, the ecstasies. Star Trek should exist for a long time to come based on those truths. I for one would love to see its continuity. It’s with sorrow that I hear about the cancellation of the new Star Trek series.

I had doubts about this series when it was announced and what information was released about it over the past couple of years.
I started watching it last night at home and gave up after watching the first episode.
The 5 primary SF Academy Cadets are introduced. Their introduction’s basically annoyed me cuz they are all stereotypical characters that have been used in high school/college dramas for the past 30+ years in series/movies.
The Klingon had me scratching my head being introduced as weakling and into ‘Bird Watching’. He is definitely the worst character out of the bunch. No need to go into the others.
Paul Giametti is introduced as the primary bad guy for the season. The role is not for him and he was wrongly cast for the role. He is too good of an actor for what they had him doing.
Holly Hunter is introduced as the new StarFleet Academy Chancellor and Captain of the Starship Athena. She too is mis-cast being a veteran actor. The role is beneath her skills as an actress.
Besides the above, the big mistake was making this series a spinoff of ‘Discovery’. That series ended with the Discovery jumping 900 years into the future from where the series started. This caused a high level of unbelievability for the series trying to depict how technology had advanced in 900 years.
This series should have been a spinoff of ‘Strange New Worlds’ allowing those cast members to have small cameos and possibly setting up for a future Kirk/Enterprise series.
The SS Athena looked like a locust with how the Nacelles were designed. And the interior looked like the inside of the Bellagio Resort/Casino in Las Vegas.
