An ex-porn star allegedly decapitated the father of her children because she wanted him out of the picture after she married her stepson, according to the prosecution.
Devyn Michaels, 47, was arrested in August 2023 for the murder of Jonathan Willette, 46, whom she stands accused of slaughtering inside his Henderson, Nevada home.
The adult actress, who also goes by Nikki Fairchild and Tracee Taverz, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder last fall. She entered a plea deal in which she would serve 15 years in prison with the possibility of parole.
But her July sentencing hearing went off course - she insisted that she could prove her innocence.
Ultimately, District Court Judge Tierra Jones allowed Michaels to exit the deal and take the case to trial, warning the alleged killer that she now risks being convicted of first-degree murder.
Michaels' convoluted trial kicked off on Wednesday, with both prosecutors and defense attorneys making jaw-dropping claims about what led to the death of Willette, who is the father of Michaels' two children.
Clark County Chief Deputy District Attorney John Giordani claimed Michaels chopped off the victim's head - which still has not been found - because she wanted to raise her children with his son, Deviere Willette, 29.
While Michaels and Willette were never married, the accused murderer married his son in 2021.
Michaels and Deviere allegedly began their relationship when he was in his late teens, according to messages and photos presented in court that date back to 2016.
'And all I can say is, "Buckle up, because you’re in for a wild ride,"' Giordani told jurors in court on Wednesday, according to 8 News Now.
The prosecutor went on to present stomach-churning crime scene pictures, including Willette's headless body. Police said Michaels had beaten him with a stick, decapitated him and then poured chemicals on his corpse.
While Michaels and Willette's relationship was finished, they were allegedly in the process of moving back in together.
But Giordani claimed this was far from an ideal situation for Michaels.
Referencing a photo of Michaels, Deviere and her children, Giordani said: 'This is the future that she saw and that she wanted, and the only way to have that future was with John out of the picture.'
Michaels' attorney, Robert Draskovich, told the court a far different story - claiming his client has no blood on her hands and accusing Deviere of murdering his father.
Deviere was never named as a suspect and faces no charges related to Willette's death. Police interviewed him multiple times and he will testify during the trial.
'Look at the motivations, and find her not guilty,' Draskovich told the courtroom, as per 8 News Now.
The defense lawyer went on to paint a vivid picture of Michaels and Deviere's 'sexless' marriage, plagued by jealousy and disloyalty.
In the days leading up to Willette's gruesome death, Michaels was allegedly fighting with her husband.
Text messages presented in court allegedly showed Michaels calling Deviere a 'liar' and a 'cheater.' She also asked him for a divorce.
'Deviere was getting kicked out, he was no longer going to be in this relationship because dad, the dad he hated, was coming in and not only taking his home, but taking his wife,' Draskovich claimed, 8 News Now reported.
While police stated that no evidence suggested Deviere was at the scene, the defense attorney claimed he works as a home security technician and had access to a power saw.
Investigators said that Michaels killed Willette on August 7, 2023, at his Henderson home before driving his head back to her house in Las Vegas.
She then dumped his head in the trash, where the sanitation service likely picked it up and disposed of it.
Before the murder, court records show that Michaels and Willette had been entrenched in a custody battle, which resulted in Willette having full custody of their daughters.
In June, Giordani alleged Michaels said 'she needed the victim out of the way' because of a child custody issue, according to Courthouse News Service.
