Bruh, I'm as empathetic and sympathetic as most people. But if you tell people they have 6 minutes to leave the city, all you're doing is inciting panic and causing those people so much stress and grief. You can't make more than a handful of calls, and thats if the telecoms holds up to the sudden surge in demand.

Those last 6 minutes, those people and their loved ones will be filled with so much angst, regret, anger, sadness..... the 8 stages of grief in 5 minutes. That to me, seems more cruel than to let them continue about their days/ last few minutes in blissful ignorance.

Now if there was at least 30 minutes. I'm all for it, give people a chance to get out and live. But less than 10........ nah fam, that's, that's not a wise move in my opinion.

there is gonna be panic regardless. hell we've seen panic with simple gas shortages.
i'd rather deal with the 8 stages of grief that not be informed at all.
Any planes in route to those cities could be diverted, travelers in cars headed to either of those cities could turn around.
But either way,.......it was gonna be the inevitable outcome for all major cities,....which why alot of them were breaking down.
Once we launch our nukes,....everyone else will launch theirs. Basically there's nowhere to run.
Especially after they mentioned the Sub off the north Atlantic with 16 ICMBS. That would wipe out every major city on the eastern seaboard in less than 20 mins.

none of that matters...if youre close to ground zero (and youll hope youre close to ground zero) you'll be vaporized anyway. If I cant get out completely then I'm going to ground zero because you DONT want to be a survivor in that situation.

Ok, so now you've made me go back and actually pick through this movie.

They knew where it was in the sky 19 minutes before potential impact, but not which city was the target. It launched from the Pacific Northwest and their initial estimates had potential targets of Phoenix, Houston, LA, NYC, Jacksonville.... basically damn near anywhere In the continental USA

Then with under 16 minutes until impact they updated the list of top 10 cities:
Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati were the top 3 most probable (~ 26% each). Then was Chicago, Louisville (~9% each) in the medium range, and then Indianapolis and St Louis in the low probability range (2%). And the bottom 3 were New York, Los Angeles and Houston as highly unlikely with 0% probability.

So lets say they decide that 10 minutes is enough time. You have to subtract 2-3 minutes to start to relay the message to the potential cities.

So who do you alert, the top 3 cities, the top 5, or all 7?

And given that each of those metropolitan areas will have only approximately 10 minutes to exit the fallout zone of an ICBM...... that's still not enough time for most people to escape. But that is enough time to really fuck with their heads those last 10 minutes.

Again, bruh I understand giving people "a fighting chance." 10 minutes isnt it. Most people will take 2 minutes just trying to come to grips with losing everything. Then trying to calculate how far they can go, if they have time to do x,y and z.

Again if it were at least 30 minutes, I say do it. But by the time they relay the alert to the affected city in this scenario, they'd have a little more than 10 mins to escape.

My opinion stilo stands. It would be cruel to try to alert Chicago and let them know that they jave less than 15 minutes to escape.

Well here in Texas, there are quite a few people that actually have nuclear bomb shelters built in their backyards.
One of my clients in Lewisville is actually a company that makes such shelters. They make them out of train cars and retrofit them before they're buried.
So yeah 10 minutes is more than enough time to get yo ass in a bomb shelter if you have one.
Not all people have one......but damn, at least give those that do a chance to get in that mufucka.

30 minutes isnt enough time... think rush hour traffic in the mornings and evenings combined...then x1000....2 hours wouldnt be enough time

for those wanting a sequel.... lets assume the bomb was real and not a spoofing attack or a dud. Illinois gets blasted so the US is forced to retaliate in kind. Which means we wouldn't be searching for just the individual actors who launched the missile..they were sponsored by some country...if that turned out to be as Herman Caine put it...Ubecki-becki-stan-stan... then Ubecki-becki-stan-stan would get lit up. Not just for revenge but to save face. You can't have 10 million americans killed and strike back at only a small group of rogue actors.

So the sequel would be the decision and act of striking back at whatever country funded those rogue actors.

I think that is too simplistic of a resolution.

They would be analyzing all aspects of the missile, (who made the launch vehicle, who made the warhead, who made the gps/targeting system...etc) let's say it was a combination of chinese, Russian and "umbecki-becki-stan-stan" parts. How and why did they able to assemble it?

Who provided the "blind cover" (either physically and/or technologically) that prevented us from seeing its point of origin/ detecting it sooner.

Even though a certain "allie" is committing a genocide, the US would never directly retaliate in kind unless it was willing to "take out" numerous regimes/ leaders and install new ones and face the onslaught of global backlash.

I think, like in "Sum of All Fears," there would be a coordinated, calculated and meticulous operation to "eliminate" all branches of that tree.

The current administration might go scorched earth or some psuedo-variation with tinges of corruption/payola.

But I believe most recent presidents would be on some super lowkey revenge shit and then publicly make an announcement once some of the more high profile targets were eliminated.

With it being in such close proximity to Russia and China, they would launch theirs at us out of fear. We'd then launch more nukes at them.
Nuclear apocalypse envelopes the globe. The fallout kills billions more.
Countries not affected will celebrate and consider themselves the new superpower.
Mexico will close their borders and not allow any Americans in.

you gave an interesting scenario...but I would suppose that minutes before the launch the US would warn/inform russia and china that they traced the culprits to North korea and they would be striking them specifically to head off any reaction like that. A nuclear sub would do the launch and North Korea would get lit up in minutes with no time to launch themselves. It would be a tactical surgical strike. And russia and china could only watch unless they want to descend the world in to a nuclear hell.
