Exactly how good is Victor Wembanyama? Is he top 10? Top 5? Top 3???

Yep, the Spurs' young star is an alien

I understand if you’re not ready to be here with me (and others, I’m sure), but in no way does it feel hyperbolic to call Victor Wembanyama a top-five player in the NBA.

He’s only 21. His third year just started, and his second season ended early because of deep vein thrombosis. It’s easy to get caught up in moments and get too excited about a player.

But Wemby is absolutely a top-five player in the league right now. I feel comfortable saying Nikola Jokić and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are better, because of course. After that? I’ll listen to the arguments for Giannis Antetokounmpo and Luka Dončić. It’s cool if you think that’s absurd. But it’s not a definite case, if last night is any sign of what is to come and what is here today.

Anthony Davis is a really good defender, and with lots of logic, you might think he’s the ideal person to defend Wemby and take away what he’s good at doing. Wemby absolutely cooked Davis last night.

He dropped an easy 40 on him and Dereck Lively II and anybody else who was unfortunate enough to defend him, as the Spurs won 125-92. Everything Wemby did was easy. He went 15-of-21 from the field and 9-of-11 from the line. He took two 3-pointers and made one of them. He also had 15 rebounds and three blocks — though his presence had the Dallas Mavericks not really interested in exploring the paint.

There were so many highlights to choose from, but this was the one that had group chats flooded with swear words and social media racing to see who could post the video faster. Watch what he does to Lively here.

That’s what a 7-foot-7 Steph Curry would look like! They wouldn’t let you create a player like this in a video game past like 2009 because they decided to try to make things realistic. This happened about 10 seconds after he spiked a Lively shot in the paint.

Earlier in the game, he pump faked PJ Washington into the atmosphere, drove baseline, took a swipe on the arm from AD and did an up-and-under, two-handed, reverse dunk.

Just ridiculous for a man who might be upwards of 9 feet tall by the end of this sentence.

We’re a handful of paragraphs and two GIFs into this section, and I haven’t even mentioned that Cooper Flagg started at point guard and made his debut for the Mavs. It was supposed to be this great showdown between two of the most hyped prospects of the past 15 years. Instead, Flagg struggled and all of the shine went to Wemby. Flagg finished with 10 points on 4-of-13 from the field and 10 rebounds. Zero assists despite starting as the “point guard,” and most of his damage happened later in the game with the outcome decided. Dallas needs to get him more action going to the basket, which will be easier when Wemby isn’t stalking the rim

I’d take him with the first pick in fantasy

If I hand the 2nd pick and jokic went first I’ll take him 2nd

I find it funny how people want to make a whole thread about this when we have a NBA thread on this board for these kind of debates.

Are you kidding me? The NBA thread is for general NBA discussion and you have guys who post 100 tweets a day in there. It is totally unsuitable for prolonged discussion of a particular topic.

There have always been and always will be NBA threads about particular topics, like the Luka trade. The purpose of the NBA thread is not to contain all NBA discussion to one thread, it is to have a place to discuss games/topics that would never merit their own thread-- i.e. a regular Thursday night game.

You can't even read posts from the night before in that thread without dedicating two hours to it. Most people don't read it all and shit is easily missed. You have four people posting the same tweet because all some people do is post every NBA tweet they see to the thread and they don't even bother to read to see what other people have already posted.

I have my own Twitter account and see many of the tweets there before they are posted. That thread is 95% tweets and I honestly don't like it. I post tweets sometimes but shit is out of control with the new OP. We have had two days of games and that thread, which was created on Tuesday, already has over 1,600 posts. I don't have time for that shit.

There has been MUCH MORE DISCUSSION of this question from me making this thread about it-- it probably would have gotten two replies in the thread. I contribute to the thread and I post actual original thoughts and content there but I will create a thread about a particular NBA topic whenever I damn well please and do not apologize.

I feel that and I see what you saying but still :giggle:

Okay. Then you'll refrain from making further off-topic posts and playing thread police.

I think it will be interesting to look back at people saying he's not top 10 when he wins MVP or comes in top 3. Or maybe he'll be healthy and not finish top 5 and all the people saying top 3 will look silly. That isn't possible in a million page thread on every topic.

And the NBA thread was never meant to limit all NBA discussion to that one thread. There have always been NBA threads on specific topics and I've never seen anybody come in shaming someone for having a specific discussion the way you two are. :smh:

Enough of that and back to the discussion...

Wemby, if he stays healthy, will be an all time great for sure!! His skill set an height is undeniable and he like a combination of KD and Hakeem :eek2: which is absurd and ridiculous to say( I know); but dude has it and its only a matter of time before he puts it all together...

But where is he right now?

I did not see last night's game but I could see top 3 looking ridiculous by the end of the year... I could also see it looking self-evident.

Of course, everybody would take him over Steph Curry to start a franchise with because of the 15 year age difference. But do you really think he's better than Steph right now? I think if I want to win a championship this year, I'm taking Steph. I'm taking Jokic, I'm taking SGA, I'm taking Giannis, I might take Ant Edwards. He's not better than KD if they are both healthy-- is he? I might be ignoring his defensive excellence a bit in arguing for KD & Ant over him.

You can definitely argue he is not top 5 today...

He’s a good player right now, that’s it!! He hasn’t proven anything yet. Hell, he hasn’t proven he can stay healthy…

He played over 70 games his first season and his season last year ended with a blood clot, so I don't think it is fair to label him injury plagued. The blood clot was just some random unlucky shit that can happen to anyone. You would not think he played over 70 games in his first year based on the way people talk about him.

So right now, you think he's not top ten, it seems. Is he top 20?

This is exactly why it is good to have this thread-- I think you're going to look silly saying "he's a good player right now, that's it" and we can see what everyone said at the beginning of the year.

IMO, he's top ten RIGHT NOW. I think he actually has proven it and he passes my top 10 eye test.

He hasnt proven a dam thing! Great players do it over time not just one time; great players win games, what has he won? Great players win constantly and consistently; again what has he won? Great players also win when it matters!! So no he hasnt proven a dam thing! Mofos love to fall in love with the now; win and win consistently then we shall talk; until then, stay healthy my guy...

This thread is about the now, mfer!!!

It’s easy to wait until June to say who was the best team and the best player but that’s not what this thread is!

You are capable of grasping the concept because you said “He’s a good player right now, that’s it!”

So what does that mean? Sounds like he’s not top ten right now if you think he’s just good.

What has Wembanyama produced in terms of winning and sustainability?

The question has nothing to with his past. This isn’t about career rankings. 100+ players have had better careers than he has. Chris Paul has produced much more in terms of winning and sustainability but that has nothing to do with the topic, which is where VW ranks among NBA players right now.

Right now he is a top 15 player which puts him on the All NBA Third Team.

Can you name 10 players who are better than him?

He is ...... the TOP Player in the NBA!

You could trade him to any team and PICK what player you want for him. That team will say YES!.......BUT, there is NO TEAM that could send you a player that San Antonio would take for HIM !!!!!!!!! Case CLOSED

No, because teams don’t make trades only thinking about just this year. His youth is a part of that. The Nuggets could give up 5 years of Jokic for 15 years of Wemby— that doesn’t mean they think Wemby is better right now.

He has good footwork, mobility and shooting range for his height. He is no joke and he can be one of the greatest bigs in the NBA,
if he stays healthy. Right now he can be considered top 10 currently.

That two-handed underneath the rim dunk on the MAVS was nasty. My bruhs and I went
DAYUM!
