“Much optimism and fanfare today over the signing of the Israel-Hamas peace agreement. Despite all of the rhetoric, I have yet to see any evidence that Israel has actually agreed in principle or in writing to a two-state solution with a Palestinian state in Gaza and the West Bank.
We have no reason to believe that Israel has abandoned its pursuit of a greater Israeli state in the occupied territories in the past week. And it would be a mistake to think that Netanyahu is constrained by any written or verbal commitments made in order to secure this deal.
What seems far more likely is that Netanyahu was forced into a tactical retreat/strategic pause under overwhelming pressure from the international community and then Trump.
This agreement is partially the result of the actions by G7 nations like France, the UK, and Canada which defied Israel and the US by recognizing Palestine at the UN.
Ultimately it was Netanyahu’s failed strike against Qatar which decisively turned Trump against him and motivated him to pressure Israel to stop the conflict.
At the same time, Israel is beginning its counter-attack in US media with its acquisition of Tiktok and CBS, this strategic pause allows them to regain some ground on this front as well.
What’s more— in light of the rearmament of Iran and the Iranian regime’s expulsion of the IAEA, there will either be a grand bargain with Tehran over its nuclear program or a decisive confrontation with Israel. Prioritizing this matter probably required Israel to retreat from Gaza.“
