They listened to Broadway like them plays were gonna lose money to a casinoFuck
It literally would’ve brought them more money..cause casinos draw money… people literally walk in their to spend money.. so pocket full of cash or cards ready to spend, all that means is things surrounding them can benefit off them spenders.. from food vendors, to transportation, to shopping centers, etc.. also gave another reason for tourist to choose Manhattan for a destination cause it gave them something else to doThey listened to Broadway like them plays were gonna lose money to a casino

Detroit and ny are 2 diff things.. there’s a casino in yonkers and queens that are thriving..lots of minorities have jobs there.. in yonkers there’s these squad of cab drivers that be out in front that will whip you back home if need be.. I rather hop the bus and take it downtown than hop in the whip or uber/lyft to yonkers to play.. also casinos attract a lot of chicks and I like the idea of being surrounded by money and chicks.. a person like me that is a night owl would just love to randomly hop into those conditions at any hr of the day, which is why I’m mad it’s not in manhattanThat was EXACTLY the argument that proponents made when they were trying to decide whether Detroit would get casinos.
People fell for it.
Three casinos. NOT ONE BLACK OWNED, or even with significant black ownership.
Greeks and a couple of native tribes and of course, of group of plain old white folks ended up owning all three casinos.
A few black folks got jobs.
People come to the casinos from other states, even other countries, drop money at the casino and the attached or nearby hotels, and leave. Most don't even stay the night, nor do they generally explore any area outside of the immediate vicinity.
Shootings and mini riots occur frequently in Greek Town, where one of the casinos is located.
In other words, it sounds great, but just does not happen that way.
They did the right thing. A casino is the last thing and arts district of any kind needs.

more likly its the old money / philanthropic crowd that said no - Broadway is one of "their" untouchablesin other words the committee needed more bribes.
They teamed with the roc cause they saw what jay did to BrooklynIf I was on the board I would've voted for the casino ONLY IF
51% of the profit for LIFE goes to youth programs that cover sports, arts and EDUCATION (to include financial, law & engineering) ALONG with the 100's of units for low income housing in their properties
Fuck these corporations that are only profit driven
They ONLY teamed up with Roc cause they thought it would solidify their chances of getting the license . Let's keep it real
