Went and picked her up one day and headed towards Bessemer. Stopped to get gas near Legion Field (when those projects were still active as hell) and saw some young dudes pull up and blow 3 dudes to pieces right in front of me. I was 17. I don't think I was ever normal again after seeing that. Crazy part was, it didn't even make the news.

I lived in both Montgomery and Birmingham. Montgomery for 3 years and Bham for most of my life. I'd still say Bham is more violent than the gump. Per capita, who knows. But I still go to Montgomery fairly regularly and have for the last 25 years (I've been fuckin with a chick there off and on since I was in college). There were some places like Ridgecrest in Montgomery that I just wouldn't fuck with at all...but in general, you'll be fine there. Birmingham though? It doesn't matter if you're in Centerpoint, Tarrant, Homewood, Bessemer, West End or Ensley. If you don't have your head on a swivel you can easily become a victim.
There's a reason Bham was on first 48 more than any city other than Memphis for a long period of time. It doesn't matter where you're at in Bham, shit can get real quickly. It's a poor city that hasn't grown whatsoever since the civil rights era. No fortune 500 companies, basically nothing outside of UAB healthcare system. To be honest, Bham might legit be more dangerous than Memphis. Hearing gunshots for us was nothing outside of the ordinary...ever.
