Illinois is now the first U.S. state to require annual mental health screenings for students, starting in the 2027-2028 school year.

Really good development! Should happen in every state. Understanding the mental health needs of young people can lead to completely life-saving help.

Good! I swear every person I meet from Illinois or Indiana is kinda "off". If it's more than a basic cursory health screen, maybe this will help address some of the ptsd that those kids deal with.

Ok and if a student has mental issues what are they going to do about it? Besides what's already been done to them which does nothing but get them prepared for prison.

We had something like this when I was in elementary school and we had real counselors back then that followed through with us and our parents about time I graduated high school budget cuts killed all that :smh: Counselors use to be like that cool aunt or uncle you go to they're very few of them left that go that extra mile for students.

That's obviously Step #2.

I don't think the intention is to screen for the sake of screening and to do nothing.

The first step is to diagnose the problem. This is the only state doing that. It's ridiculous to be at all critical.

Sounds like a good idea if the premise was to get help to those that need it.

With this current administration…..I will bet the ranch that this will serve to segregate and exclude.

Remember that old time bias test they use to ask kids…..

What is under your cup. A) the table B) a saucer etc…..

I’m starting to be a conspiracy theorist when it comes to anything race related in this country.

Carry on…..

This is a state level policy. The current administration doesn't have shit to do with it.

I agree w you on the first part…..the second part not as much…..

I would also think that the administration has nothing to do w the Washington NFL team

Carry on……..

Washington DC is not a state. Apples and oranges. You are being negative for the sake of being negative. Carry on.

I think they're just trying to make sure the kids don't shoot up the classroom

I think they're just trying to make sure the kids don't shoot up the classroom

I don’t think that’s the only motivation but it wouldn’t be a bad one.

Keep in mind that this is Illinois— the problem with shootings is primarily outside of the classroom. (As with most states but the issue in Chicago is well-known.)

I’m noticing people can’t just celebrate a good thing, even when there is nothing bad to be said people just have to invent reasons to be negative.

When someone is required to undergo a mental health screening it's usually because they've done something terrible or displayed antisocial behavior. It's less about the person's mental health needs and more about protecting society from "deranged lunatics".

So what does it say when our most marginalized generation is required to have one every year?

Keep in mind that a negative mental health diagnosis can have a bigger impact on a person's job and educational prospects than a felony criminal record. Especially now that our president has enacted executive order 14321.

That means if a mentally ill student experiences homelessness they could potentially be thrown into a mental institution before the ink dries on their eviction notice. Even if their illness had nothing to do with the reason they lost their home.

Notice the headline mentions screening, but nothing about treatment. If anything, this big beautiful bill will make it harder to access care.

So no, there's little to celebrate here.
