Movie Debate: Why are modern movies so bad?

I can name a bunch of cult classics that cost 15 million dollars or less that did good in the theatre that you could easily put on streaming in today’s market and people would’ve love… saw cost 1 million to make.. if it was released today on streaming platforms it still would been a hit.. it dosent take a lot of money to make a good movie… the long walk could been a streaming movie or theatre release… weapons could be both
Interesting you said this because I posted this clip somewhere showing Spike Lee talking about this.

Part of what's happening is that there is a lot more competition to the theatrical film format itself.

30 years ago, theatrical film's only content was TV. People have brought up streaming apps, but have left out youtube and tiiktok.

So those Friday nights when people were bored at home so they went to the movies to have something to do are over. People that love movies will still go. But the number of true theatrical movie enthusiasts is shrinking. Hell, millenials and gen-z don't even prefer to watch content on TVs, they watch it on their phones and tablets, so the allure of a big screen is not nearly a draw for them as it is for Gen-X

^^^ Kaboom 5 - Okay Boomer

The home theatre, piracy, streaming and the EXPENSE of going to the movies ESPECIALLY for families - is making a lot of people not CRAVE going to the movies anymore.

And let us not forget the demise of physical media.

that's a VERY tricky thing to figure out.

Should we be DIFFERENATING between streaming content and theatrical?
Theatrical content eventually becomes streaming! All streaming is is vcr dvd cd without buying it!! That’s all it is! So people haven’t changed except for buying the actual physical item that the content is on. But point is content, no matter what, needs to be good! And most content isn’t../

Very valid point

You can't just drop that and walk away.

Its more complicated.

People now will see a trailer and say to themselves that LOOKS like a streaming movie. I'll wait. (especially if I'm paying 15 a month anyway!)

And the the theatrical runs are so short now people just WAIT anyway.

And depending on the movie if its sold out the first week? Many will just WAIT for streaming.

That effects the overall consumption and experience of theatre movies.

^^^^ Kaboom 2 the booming

Audience claim to want new and different and HATE franchises and reboots and existing IP BUT there viewing happens show that is NOT true OVERALL
..and these same people tell those who be complaining "Hey if you don't like it,then go watch the original version(s)"

As I’ve said b4 for over a decade all they care about is making great trailers.. they put more effort in to making good trailers than making good movies… they know how to sell good looking chicken that taste like shit… they said fuck making good chicken.. if it look good and smell good people will buy it… once you buy it they already got you, than you taste it and go goddamn it , this taste like crap.. they already got your money… it took yrsss but people started to fig this out and stopped buying the good looking chicken that taste like crap

I mean... they kinda RIGHT on that too. Jay Z if you want the old Jay? Buy my old albbums!

If I OWNED Six Million Dollar Man IP? I'm dropping content like CRAZY till the wheels fall off.

Its a BUSINESS. I get it. Of course i would want it to be GOOD! but these so called fans are fickle as f**k and cannot be trusted.

And if people REALLY loved the original like that?

They would stream it and buy the physical.

I pretty much know the movies I'll be seeing in the theater over the next few years already. Everything else will be streaming.

If you want to do a test ask yourself since 2000 can you name 20 movies that you would pay $20 to see that came out… or top 30 movies that you would have paid $10 to see since 2000.. this pretty much will answer why movies aren’t good

Now if you did an 80-99 list you’d probably have more films that you would name

your right it does but fucking Lilo and Stich made a billy!!! Minecraft made a billy :giggle: i Still dont know how that happen :dunno:; but yes there are people who will wait; but those people, to me, have always waited!! People use to wait for the movies to come out on cable; but to your point, movies didnt use to hit cable for dam near 8 months lol; so movies hitting in 3 months or less, then people will wait more. They should do a thing where no matter what, movies will not hit streaming to at least 6 months; and if movies bomb at the box office then they wont hit streaming at all!! Put the emphasis on people have to make good movies and people have to go see them; boom problem solved :giggle::giggle::giggle:

Lilo and Stitch? Minecraft? was easy bro... and I told these dudes early.

that's FAMILY demographic. that's an existing cartoon franchise on TV and a beloved classic. I had to make multiple trips

Minecraft is also beloved IP! I KNEW even when people were bashing that horrible trailer that it was gonna be fine.

Because these movies? AIN"T FOR THEM.

Its for a whole OTHER demographic don't do give a sh*t about the budget the marketing or the trailer

They wanted a damn MINECRAFT movie. I helped pay for a take the whole 2 3 4th grades to go see it.

Lilo & Stitch was good and I laughed my ass off seeing these no kids no girlfriend basement dwelling youtubers trying to REVIEW it.

Who gives a SH*T WTF they think? It was for the KIDS! It was good.

Minecraft was NOT good but it was the best Minecraft movie possible. It did what it was SUPPOSED to do. Kept families entertained for 90 minutes. Chicken Jockey!!!

No more no less. In a weird way for the way Jack Black dominated that madhouse of a entire movie? HE should get an honorary Oscar.

you know what though? You joking...but I UNDERSTAND your point. I think the streaming window should be a little longer.

the problem is the COST of keeping it theatrical can hurt. And contracts with streaming platforms can have things negotiated.

Theatre owners and movie studios are 2 different things… theatre owners are basically the middleman.. they are the host.. they get a small percentage of the revenue of hosting the film and make most money off concessions.. if a movie ain’t selling time to kick that shit to the curb for a movie that is that puts asses in the seat.. that’s biz 101.. they can’t afford to host movies that don’t put asses in the seats

and see thats why some movies make it regardless of how bad they are; because they hit a certain demographic; but thats whole nother dilemma...

Hollywood would probably make a lot or most of their money thru the theaters; now they dont have too; streaming doesnt cost that much and you have guaranteed money coming every month no matter what; so they would never do it; but they should if they wanted to get more people in the theaters...

Playa will tell you yrs ago about cult followings and how you can make lots of money catering just to them.. five nights at Freddy and Minecraft are just examples of the proof I was spitting

The real money is always direct to consumer.. you don’t have to depend on middle men or their terms , you get all to most of the money, you can charge anything you want, you can adjust your price according to film, in certain cases you can charge less and still make more money cause you get still get all the money.. truth is they should’ve been doing straight to consumers a long time ago.. but than you had the cry baby movie theatre goers complaining about “the movie experience “, theatre owners of course being pissed about being cut out the equation, than you had lost of jobs with all the workers at theatres

well that will never go away but pirating doesnt hurt the theaters or theatrical run of a movie like that...
Oh it does.. Superman and fantastic four had good copies out same week, I know people that were gonna see it in the theatres, but once they saw them copies they was like fuck that staying home and watching it

true true true; but heres the thing! a movie cost is its cost regardless; its gonna go to streaming regardless; it doesnt hurt your streaming company if it lands on the platform 6 months later; so why not make the extra money in the theaters; disney was gonna put Lilo and Stich straight to disney plus; they didnt and the movie made a billy plus! so they pocketed what like 600-700 million before it hits the streaming; im doing that all the time no matter what!!

i mean people are gonna pirate for sure; but lets say there was no streaming and or those movies would not hit streams for a year!! that will force people to see it more at the movies; that has an overall way more affect than pirating...

Your all right.

I think TOO MUCH CONTENT and not real actual good movies and shows is a serious problem.

Everything is so disposable now

and that links into OVERSATURATION.

Too much content makes a lot of stuff get lost

and then the studios stick to existing IP because of name recognition and attention

And because that becomes the thing the studio INVESTS in the most?

the public responds to it more which PROVES to the studios reboots are the best bet and the cycle continues.

I mean there was Squid Games which wasn' a known IP. and even more recently K-Pop Demon Hunters, while not quite unique, it wasn’t an established IP either. From, YellowJackets, Atlanta...... those were unique/ originals.

There are still plenty of series and movies to be made that are good / great and will capture an audience/ following.

But studios / platforms have to be willing to give them a chance.

What I tend to notice though, even with some of the shows I mentioned earlier, the shows start out great. Hell add Lost or Prison Break and the Following..... and by the 3rd/4th season they've jumped the shark or gotten so far away from the original premise.

Or.....

There's such a long break between seasons that the audience forgets about it and moves on/ creators decide to move on.

I gotta look over my favorites list but there are a handful of shows that debuted between late 2023 to mid 2024 and won't have a new season until "2026"...... why?!!

You get a show like Fallout, (I know not a unique property, but new to Series TV), the studio invest tens of millions in advertising, the show is a success and you don't start filming the new season until a year after its release?!! Season 1 debute: April 2024, season 2 debute: December 2025 that's 19 months!!!

Actors today know studios are fickle (and CHEAP), they've gotta eat or feed families so now you're going to run into "scheduling conflicts" or etc, because they can't wait 6 months for a studio to renew a series. Or for "at risk" actors there could be health or legal ussues that complicate things.....

A theatre only has but so many rooms in it to show different films.. once a film dwindles in appeal it has to be removed by the theatre owners.. 8 months from now Superman ain’t gonna have many people running to go see it as whatever big movie will be coming out by than, it’s got to be pushed to the side for theatres survival.. pirating has been out for decades but the quality and access has gotten way better and easier.. the movie biz can’t really stop it.. so you have 2 situations that could’ve worked decades ago but couldn’t work today due to technology and quantity.. way more movie studio/production companies, content creators now compared to the 80/90s.. we have the interNet now to get our pirates stuff instead of the bootleg man in the street.. you have to understand the modernization of the world… it’s hundreds of films coming out from now to Jan 1 supes gonna get moved to the side just off that alone

There will always be pirates; movies dont have to stay in the theater that long for it not to hit streaming; movies are controlled by executives; and these execs make the decisions on what is streaming and whats not and for how long etc etc; Lilo and Stich, just like any other movie, was pirated; and that didnt stop it from making a billion plus at the box office!! Pirating aint stopping a movie from making money!!

This is another subject I thought of and said effects the movie biz.. it’s way more good series now than there is movies.. better detail and better execution.. there’s more series I would rather pay to see than movies I’d pay to see.. there’s more series funny thing is I haven’t even come close to be a person that watches series on a regular… the handful I’ve seen I liked and felt more entertained than watching flicks.. if you can watch a series or have a certain streaming platform where you can be more entertained than watching a flick than that’s another strike against the industry

and see thats why some movies make it regardless of how bad they are; because they hit a certain demographic; but thats whole nother dilemma...

But there where the subjective stuff comes in.

If my baby girl loves Lilo & Stitch isn't she SUPPOSED TO?

The movie was never really for me anyway.

Same with Minecraft.

And then it muddy the waters even more?

Define what makes a movie bad.

^^^^

The Kaboom : the next generation

Movies that are released FIRST in theaters before being dropped on streaming overwhelmingly do better on streaming.

The streaming doesn't cost much thing aint REALLY true if you see how much Amazon Netflix and Paramount are dropping on these movies and series.

Oh im not saying movies shouldnt be made for certain demographics; of course they should! And just because the movie is entertaining those demographics, doesnt mean the movie isnt good!! im not saying Lilo and Stich wasnt good; im just saying i dont know how that shit made a billion :giggle:
