“Episodes of Star Trek Picard ranged from 48 to 61 minutes long with ten episodes per season. That shakes out to 480 to 610 minutes of television per season.

So it takes 2-3 times as long to get a bit more than half as much TV.”

Netflix’s High Threshold: Canceled Series ‘The Residence’, ‘Pulse’ & ‘The Recruit’ All In Top 35 For 2025, Data Reveals

By Nellie Andreeva
July 17, 2025

On Netflix, it was a big first half of 2025 for limited series and — outside of phenom Squid Game — OK six months for ongoing scripted series.

Only two English-language ongoing scripted series, The Night Agent (S2) and Ginny & Georgia (S3) made it into Top 10 at #9 and #10, with four limited series ahead of them, Adolescence (#1), Zero Day (#4), Missing You (#5) and Sirens (#8), with Sirens and Ginny & Georgia poised to amass millions of extra views in the second half of 2025 having dropped in late May and early June, respectively.

Released today, Netflix’s semi-annual viewership report includes data for the three scripted series canceled by so far this year, The Residence and Pulse after one season and The Recruit after two. None of them was an outright ratings flop.

Comedic White House murder mystery The Residence, starring Uzo Aduba, fared the best, ranking #23 with 33.3 million views from its March 20 release through June 30. New medical drama Pulse, starring Willa Fitzgerald and Colin Woodell, was #30 with 26.2M since its April 3 release. And Season 2 of spy drama The Recruit, headlined by Noah Centineo, was #34 with 24.1M since its Jan. 30 premiere while its first season added respectable 19.1M views over the first six months to take #47.

All three have been canceled while series that launched new seasons during the same Jan-June time period to similar or lower viewership have been renewed, including XO, Kitty S2 (35.3M since 1/16), Ransom Canyon S1 (29M since 4/17), Forever S1 (19.1 since 5/8) and Sweet Magnolias S4 (16.9M since 2/6).

The discrepancy underscores the multiple factors going into Netflix’s renewal decisions, the leading being cost vs. performance. That was likely in play for both The Residence and The Recruit. As Deadline reported earlier this month, The Residence‘s first season came at a very high price point due to its all-star cast, elaborate production design and extensive VFX work. There were conversations about ways to reduce the budget for a second installment, likely in a different setting, which ultimately didn’t materialize. The Recruit‘s second season featured a slew of action sequences, with a portion of the story filmed in Korea.

The Residence and Pulse, which was produced on a more modest, broadcast-size budget, also may have been overshadowed by Adolescence and The Pitt, respectively. The Residence was released at the height of Netflix limited series’ popularity while Pulse went head to head with HBO Max’s breakout hit medical drama.

There are also other factors taken into consideration, including completion rates, which Netflix values highly but does not disclose publicly, as well as critical acclaim, pop culture impact and what kind of viewers a show attracts as Netflix tries to serve the widest audience possible.

Another Netflix scripted series whose continuation is in doubt, dark comedy No Good Deed, ranked #204 with 7.9M from Jan-June 2025 in addition to the 15M it drew for the first 20 days of release in December. There are no current plans for a second installment of the murder mystery but the door has been left open.

This is not the first time Netflix has axed a Top 30 scripted series. In 2023, it canceled fantasy drama Shadow and Bone whose second season had ranked #26 in hours viewed between Jan-June that year. Like The Residence, it was expensive to produce.

There was some consolation for The Residence this week — the show landed four Emmy nominations, including one for Aduba in the Lead Actress In a Comedy Series category.

‘All American’ Renewed for Eighth and Final Season at the CW

All American” has been renewed for its eighth and final season on the CW.

The final season will consist of 13 episodes and will air in 2026. Per CW, the series is the network’s top entertainment program in prime time in the key adults 18-49 and 25-54 demographics and the top series on The CW app.

“How do I condense into just a few words what would be the longest love letter to this show, the fans, the cast, crew, staff, and producers,” said series showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll. “My heart is so filled with love and gratitude for everyone who helped bring ‘All American’ to life and kept it going for its historic run. It is so hard to say goodbye to the thing that you love, but we are so excited we get to do it in the way we envisioned with this final season. Thank you to Brad Schwartz, Channing Dungey, Brett Paul, and Greg Berlanti for supporting our vision. Thank you to the many executives at Warner Bros Discovery, CW and Berlanti Productions who have been a supportive part of the ‘All American’ huddle since day one. Thank you to our OG and new generation cast members, our writers, crew and full staff for raising the bar every episode. Thank you to Spencer Paysinger, whose life inspired this epic journey. And thank you to everyone who not only watched the show, but took Spencer James’s mantra of ‘Dream Big. Stay Real’ to heart and were inspired to chase their seemingly impossible dreams. We see you. We salute you. Here’s to leaving it all on the field one last time.”

“All American” is the last remaining scripted series on the CW that launched before the network’s sale to Nexstar. Now, the network largely focuses on unscripted programming including sports, game shows and dating competitions as well as scripted content licensed or co-produced from companies in Canada, Australia and the U.K. Besides “All American,” series on its slate include “Penn & Teller: Fool Us,” “Son of a Critch” and more.

“’All American’ is one of the greatest CW shows of all time and we are honored to bring it back for one final season to give fans a chance to say a meaningful goodbye to these inspiring characters and this incredible world,” added Brad Schwartz, president of The CW Network. “The series took bold new steps in Season 7, adding exciting new characters to the ones we already love, and viewers truly embraced it all. From the first episode of Season 7 to the last, viewership grew 71% among adults 18-49 and 55% among those age 25-54. We cannot wait to see the emotion, heart, and magic that Nkechi Okoro Carroll and the entire cast and creative team deliver in giving this story the proper ending it deserves.”

The series debuted in 2018 and originally starred Daniel Ezra as Spencer James, a high school football star based on NFL player Spencer Paysinger. Ezra stepped down as a series regular after Season 6, with Season 7 following Spencer’s friends Jordan (Michael Evans Behling), Layla (Greta Onieogou) and Coop (Bre-Z) through early adulthood. Nathaniel McIntyre, Osy Ikhile, Antonio J. Bell, Alexis Chikaeze and Kareem Grimes also star.

Channing Dungey, Chairman and CEO, Warner Bros. Television Group and WBD US Networks, said “Since the moment ‘All American’ kicked off, the audience fell in love with these characters and their heartfelt stories. Season 7 provided a rare opportunity to keep this world for the fans while introducing new characters alongside some beloved favorites. I couldn’t be more thrilled to see this story continue for an eighth and final season. I know Nkechi and our very talented team of writers and executive producers will deliver something unforgettable. Thank you to Greg and Sarah at Berlanti Productions for their leadership, and to our partners at The CW for this opportunity.”

In 2021, the CW launched a spinoff titled “All American: Homecoming,” which followed Jordan’s ex-girlfriend Simone Hicks (Geffri Maya) as she pursued a tennis career at a historically Black university. The series ran for three seasons, concluding in September of 2024, and also starred Peyton Alex Smith, Kelly Jenrette, Cory Hardrict, Sylvester Powell, Camille Hyde, Mitchell Edwards, Netta Walker, Rhoyle Ivy King and Martin Bobb-Semple.

Okoro Carroll is the showrunner of “All American,” and executive produces alongside Greg Berlanti, Jameal Turner, Sarah Schechter and David Strauss. The series is produced by Warner Bros. Television and CBS Studios in association with Berlanti Productions.

Gravity

5.5/10

I started this series while at home over the 4th of July weekend and finished it last night on the road. It’s from STARZ and is currently on tubi where I watched it.

I mainly watched it cuz Krysten Ritter stars in it. It’s a dark comedy drama based around suicide survivors.

The suicide survivors backstory on how they attempted suicide is shown throughout the episodes. The series is mainly a small ensemble cast running around and going through their own hijinks as they try to get their lives back together.

For the Thirsty, Krysten has one scene in her black underwear. It’s a full body shot and she is shown from the rear. She looks as she did from “Breaking Bad” in this series. Former Supermodel Rachel Hunter co-stars and she is still in her prime in this series. There is no full nudity of Krysten or Rachel.

For the Gay Agenda trackers, a LM dick is briefly shown. The same LM has a scene wearing a woman’s bra, he isn’t gay but it connects to an earlier scene from when he had sex with a woman who had a boob job.

For the Pervs, there is a quick scene showing Rachel Hunter sitting on toilet with her panties down around her calves.

It’s an interesting series. There is only one season with 10 episodes that run about 50 minutes each. It has a interesting cliffhanger, but unfortunately the series was cancelled.

Synopsis

An aging supermodel. A construction worker. A hormonal teenager. A perfect housewife. Their common bond? It's the support group they find themselves in together -- a group for people who have attempted suicide. A second chance at life brings with it opportunities as well as challenges, and the group faces them together. A detective's keen interest in star-crossed lovers (and group members) Raymond and Lily tests them even further, as they and their fellow survivors try to live and love in New York -- again.

Needs to be more movies or TV shows made in the steam/dieselpunk genres...

Enjoying the miniseries Untamed thus far. I've seen 3 of the 6 episodes and it's held my interest throughout.

Gonna finish the season 1 finale for Stick, and season 4 finale for The Bear tomorrow.

Aiming to start the original series of Bosch in the near future. Thanks to @slam for sharing the series per request recently. Think I might look to watch it in conjunction with The Agency. There are many seasons of Bosch to get through, but just the one for The Agency.

Untamed

From the harrowing and involving opening to the trauma of loss and familial turmoil and what it pushes the mind to think of and actually act on this is one of the best shows Netflix has ever produced. There's a couple of predictable moments but the good definitely outweighs the aforementioned. Everyone in the cast including : Eric Bana, Sam Neill, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Lily Santiago do a great job of fleshing out very interesting characters who have dark secrets.
