Jermaine Dupri is not playing in the documentary world. The music mogul-turned-film producer gave fans their first glimpse into a bold new chapter in storytelling at the 2025 American Black Film Festival in Atlanta with the debut trailer for his upcoming docuseries, Magic City: An American Fantasy. The series promises to lift the velvet rope and take viewers deep inside the iconic Atlanta strip club that helped shape the pulse of hip hop and Black culture.

“Magic City An American Fantasy is a riveting behind the curtain look at one of the most unique places in Black culture,” said Kathryn Busby, president of original programming at Starz. “The docuseries’ unprecedented insider access and history unveiled from those who built its empire is a perfect complement to Starz’s slate of adult culture driving shows.”

Dupri appeared at the ABFF panel alongside executive producer Cole Brown for a candid conversation about the series, moderated by journalist Jemele Hill. Together, they broke down the importance of Magic City as more than just a venue but a symbol of influence and artistic freedom that spans across generations.

Get this, the five-part series explores nearly four decades of Magic City’s cultural significance through a blend of rare footage and first-person accounts. It traces the club’s transformation into a musical and social institution that became a launchpad for stars and a haven for hip hop royalty, athletes and tastemakers alike.

The sultry docuseries features appearances from artists and influencers who lived the Magic City experience firsthand, including 2 Chainz, Nelly, Shaquille O’Neal, Quavo, Killer Mike, and Big Boi. In Atl, Magic City, Blue Flame, Follies, Club Nikki, Club Palladium and the Body Tap was so fire back in 1990s to 2010s. Whenever I touched down in ATL in the late 90s I headed straight to the Blue Flame from the airport.

Havent been to a strip club in a minute though probably alot of fake asses and silicone

Some of ya don’t realize these clubs were giving some celebs some money to throw at the girls, it was part of their booking.. so say like jd was there every Monday the club might have paid him 20-30,000 to be there and gave him an additional 10,000 to throw at the girls + free bottles… that was part of their booking stripclub hustle back in the days.. some of these spots would also lie about how much celebs threw.. a celeb could throw 5-10,000 but ud see oh this such a such dude threw 30,000.. it was all hype to get customers to come through and show out.. I know this cause I was in these circles.. only a naive celeb would throw his own money.. in fact decades ago I discussed this.. this is why celebs started making songs for the stripclub cause getting booked by the stripclub became a big revenue source for celebs.. some clubs might book you 3-4 times a yr with the money going up depending if you was becoming bigger.. 5 figs easy every booking.. think how many clubs is in diff states..nigs was making 6-7 figs just off of club appearances.. lot of people didn’t know this

This is true my brother took me to Magic City for my 21rst birthday and Iverson was in there. We all were in the VIP section and management came in with stacks of ones. Must have been 40 racks. Iverson passed all the money out to , even to us who weren’t with his crew but sitting with them. Security was like all y’all need to throw this money and don’t be trying to run out with it either. I had fun on the clubs dime in order to promote .

I think IG pretty much revealed this.

They promote the celeb coming and dudes for some reason try to be in competition and out do them.
