Not mad at it.
We been talking about him for atleast 2 years.
If the Steelers end up not making a move at WR before the season, I think that would tell us that they feel very confident Roman Wilson can be their true WR2 this year.
I think Calvin Austin is extremely underrated in terms of his pure receiving chops, but he honestly doesn't fit the role of the true #2 in Arthur Smith's offense because of Art's use of WRs as run blockers, which Calvin can't do effectively because of his lack of size & play strength (there's a reason Van Jefferson had over 100 more snaps than him last year).
But when it comes to Roman, he certainly isn't the biggest guy in the world at just 185 lbs, but he was a really good run blocker at Michigan, which is probably one of the reasons why PIT loved him coming out, and one of the reasons they may think he can take on their WR2 role in this offense moving forward.
The plan may very well be to have Roman be the true #2 that plays alongside Metcalf in their 2 WR sets (which PIT will be playing a lot of this year), then play him exclusively in the slot (where he's at his best as a receiver) when they go to their 3 WR sets, where CA3 can play as the Z on the outside (which is where he's at his best IMO).
If Roman hits this year, that's a WR rotation that could actually be quite nice for PIT this year (especially if it's complimented by a strong run game), but obviously it completely depends on if Roman (who played only 5 snaps last year) can take that big leap in Year 2 to become a legit WR2.
If PIT goes into camp without adding another WR, they're telling us they think he's ready to make that leap.
Roman is tough in the slot. He's a good blocker as well. He needs to produce ASAP. Preseason is going to be important for him. Live reps cause he missed so much time with his injury last year

I think what Steelers fans need to understand about the Jonnu Smith move is that for all intents and purposes, he’s essentially going to be the ‘big slot’ WR in Pittsburgh’s offense this year that can also provide some versatility to play some on the outside in their heavier sets on early downs, as well as some inline stuff on the outside of Washington and/or Muth when they want to do some wing formation stuff.
Here’s how I see the WR/TE rotation playing itself out rn:
- WR1: DK Metcalf
- WR2: Calvin Austin III
- ‘Little Slot’: Roman Wilson
- ‘Big Slot’: Jonnu Smith
- Receiving TE: Pat Freiermuth
- Blocking TE: Darnell Washington
In terms of workload, I think among the current group of ‘WRs’, Jonnu will be slotted to get the 2nd most snaps this year behind only DK, but probably ahead of both Calvin & Roman, unless one of those guys really breaks out this year.
Damn forgot about him too….word...Vincent Jackson too
