ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Iraqi government has issued a strong condemnation of Israel's airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and military facilities, calling the attacks a dangerous escalation and a violation of international law.
In a statement released Friday, government spokesperson Bassem al-Awadi described the Israeli assault as “a clear breach of the United Nations Charter and fundamental principles of international law,” warning that such actions threaten the stability and security of the entire region. The strikes coincided with the expected nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States.
Al-Awadi stressed that the international community must move beyond issuing statements and take concrete steps to uphold the law. He called on the UN Security Council to convene an emergency session to prevent further escalation and to restore respect for global legal norms.
"The responsibility now lies with the international community to act decisively," he said.
Reaffirming Iraq's position, the spokesperson emphasized Baghdad's commitment to the principles of sovereignty, peaceful conflict resolution, and solidarity with nations that defend an international order based on the rule of law. He also voiced support for the Iranian people amid the unfolding crisis.
The Israeli strikes reportedly targeted multiple locations in Tehran, including the headquarters of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), resulting in the deaths of several senior Iranian officials.
