Warfare is a 2025 war action film written and directed by Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland. Based on Mendoza's experiences during the Iraq War as a U.S. Navy SEAL, the film is a re-enactment of an encounter he and his platoon experienced on November 19, 2006 in the wake of the Battle of Ramadi.[4] To maintain historical accuracy, the film's material is exclusively taken from the testimonies of the platoon members, and is presented in real time beginning from the title drop. It stars an ensemble cast that includes D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai as Mendoza alongside Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Joseph Quinn and Charles Melton. The film is dedicated to platoon member Elliott Miller, played by Jarvis, who lost his leg and voice in the incident.[5]

Warfare premiered at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago on March 16, 2025, was released in the United States by A24 on April 11, 2025, and pending release in the United Kingdom on April 18, 2025. The film received highly positive reviews from critics.

Magazine Dreams

PRAISE : Magazine Dreams is a film far more deserving of larger release and a longer life than a limited release in theaters. This movie about Killian Maddox a man obsessed with becoming a famous bodybuilder but it is so much more than that. As Killian Maddox , Jonathan Majors turns in an effective performance. The character is off balance but is laser focused on building his body and I liked how the film rolls out how he does so by taking in all the right proteins and things that are highly questionable. Majors greatly displays Killians confidence at times and also the regression of it. There is self control the character easily displays at times and sometimes its not present at all and Majors handles that range to a T. The film is right up there with obsessions coming at a cost films like 2009's Big Fan and 2014's Whiplash. Also turning in a good performance is Haley Bennett as Jessie just watching her mood change as she makes a realization about Killian was incredible. 25 minutes into the movie i started to feel empathetic towards Killian. Especially due to the fact that there should have been something in place to help him with his mental health long ago. The Direction by Elijah Bynum along with the visuals are extremely effective. I think one of the films strongest messages is how lacking the care for the mentally ill is. There are such huge lapses in providing care or not providing any at all. Leaving the mentally ill to be taken advantage of and becoming dangers to themselves and others. There are some good messages inserted into the film about veterans and not being provided even the basics that some have at their fingertips while others suffer without. The suspense and disturbing moments were off the charts in several scenes.

PROBLEMS: It was hard for me to get on board with how a few things play out in the movie. The film goes down a couple of predictable paths.

Scale of 1 to 10 an 8½

The Amateur

PRAISE: A well constructed trailer had me hyped to see this movie about Charlie Heller a brilliant CIA decoder whose wife dies in a terrorist attack, when the CIA drags their feet about tracking down the terrorist Charlie sets out to do it himself. I thought Rami Malek did well as Charlie who's not a muscle bound killer but uses his smarts to get his revenge. I thought the scenes between him and Laurence Fishburne as Henderson who tries to make Charlie a killer worked. I liked that the movie held on to the nothing comes easy factor for Charlie as the movie moves along keeping it grounded for some time. There are nice touches along the way as Charlie is continuously haunted but it also pushes him to his gials and some literally fun and explosive moments as Charlie slowly but surely slips into killer mode.

PROBLEMS: Sure Charlie is a smart guy and then some but I couldn't buy into a couple of moves he makes. There are some truly talented actors in the cast but they are shockingly underused and I bet their scenes ended up being mainly edited out because they didn't want the movie to run over 2 hours. Big time predictable moments in the movie. Like I said the trailer pulled me in but the movie definitely doesn't live up to it.

This is probably the best review that expresses almost everyone who sees this feelings.

I jumped on thinkin of something like this related to how “big” Pedro Pascal is but dude ain’t a movie star is he?

It was mostly something I caught bec of timing of my seeing FREAKY TALES then Last of Us S2 over weekend

Jon Hamm hosting SNL was another example.

The old video killed the radio star is now seemingly not just TV but “prestige TV” killed the movie star

Idk. But the idea Regal Cinema ceo talked up recently about not getting folks back to theaters to see A movie but back to THE MOVIES is deeply fucked up seemingly from the now decades long legacy of major TV event series and of course the MCU etc not being based on the draw of its stars or its buzz/fresh interest etc but old ass IP that all goes into the corporate profit line

Movies draw and selling points have always been based on stars even if the star was sometimes the director etc

It at least seems like mostly black folks - Danny K, Baby Zel, Keke (who is playing into the overall star shit still w/o goin for a big tv series yet) even Zendaya seems careful not to do too much with the TV shit but balance whatever that show is with big event movies - for now - who are the actors making those more old school movie star choices in avoiding series while choosing films and roles that put them in big positions. Chad RIP was on same type path. Majors also had that going for his career. Springing off small movies into that LoveCraft shit only to get bigger movies in low key record type timing… idk.

What yall think? Who ARE the stars? And are they TV or movie stars?

What's interesting too is seeing how much quality tv there has been over the past 20 - 25 years as well. High-level shit, and prestige shows (often covered by the podcast recaps).

I was watching episode 2 of MobLand with pops last week and said - "Who would have thought you'd have Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, and Tom Hardy on a gangster tv show together?" (after having watched Mirren opposite Harrison Ford for 2 seasons on 1923).

And of course with all the reboots / remakes in movie entertainment ... more of the interest for people falls back to TV series, and how better crafted stuff can be when done well over say 6 - 10 episodes, compared to 1.5 - 2.5 hours.

Mad Max
1979

6.5/10

I watched this last night at home with my sons on MAX.

They haven’t seen the Mel Gibson films, so this was the first time they saw it.

This is the film that started the franchise. The world has already gone thru a financial/societal collapse, and the authorities are barely able to hold on to what order they can.

Max is a law enforcement in this film driving around in a modified police cruiser for maximum speed.

Max’s family is introduced. What happens to them is what pushes Max over the edge.

Not really much for action. Good visuals with VFX/SFX with vehicle chases along with camera angles.

We will get to the 2nd film at some point.

Synopsis

In a not-too-distant dystopian future, when man's most precious resource -- oil -- has been depleted and the world plunged into war, famine and financial chaos, the last vestiges of the law in Australia attempt to restrain a vicious biker gang. Max (Mel Gibson), an officer with the Main Force Patrol, launches a personal vendetta against the gang when his wife (Joanne Samuel) and son are hunted down and murdered, leaving him with nothing but the instincts for survival and retribution.
