Teacher’s job is based on pass rates. Granted, some teachers are shitty, but many are trying to make a living and trying to turn a rotten egg into a diamond is Jesus level work.

For example, when I get students that can’t do basic arithmetic (don’t even know basic multiplication), then they put that on me. Like they wasn’t in school 12 years before college.

One chair told me “they are here now, so they are our problem.” I’m like “fuck all that.”

Depending on what school she went to she probably didn't. They assume you would know based on your transcripts and if you flunk out not knowing, oh well. That's not their responsibility for teaching you what you should have learned in elementary school.

I've only heard of HBCU's doing that.

Schools are bypassing standardize testing nowadays. SAT/ACT are not required anymore. They only use them for scholarship purposes instead of admission like it used to be. She probably didn’t even take it.

Kids are always typing and never writing. They are using spellcheck. They are constantly communicating using short form and abbreviations used in text messages.

Shit, at my own kids' elementary school....they don't even use textbooks anymore. Lessons always include google classrooms, online interaction or youtube teaching.

This girl is one of many and the numbers will only increase.

Some kids may not be smart enough to read but they are smart enough to use technology to pass a class.

It was refreshing once I understood it because it explained so many things that I struggled with. I was always relatively intelligent but lacked the focus and discipline in school which I hated myself for. I could never understand why I couldn't lock on and do things instead of waiting until the last minute.

Ironically I work a job that requires an extensive amount of reading so it's still an ongoing struggle but I manage.

The fact that so many teachers include YouTube in their “lessons” is irritating. Not only that but Google classrooms and their insistence on using these “online classrooms” to utilize work that could easily be put on a sheet of paper is time consuming and lazy to me. Like you said, they need to bring back books. I gotta force my kids to read daily. Strangely enough they are trying to bring back cursive writing. Guess there’s too many people who can’t do a damn payroll signature. It’s pathetic

I would advise you to get tested.

As you said it's common and understood now so there isn't much of a stigma.

But knowing if you have it can help you whether you take any medications or not.

Interesting. Being unable to read and write is more of a parental issue than a school one. However, this lawsuit has some validity because there is no way she is supposed to get through elementary or middle school with these deficiencies without teachers passing her along.

Unfortunately, the school system can't fail students because it has nowhere to put them. For example, you can't have 19-year-olds in high school with 13 and 14-year-olds.

As someone with two kids who were high honors kids it's crazy to me that someone could get all the way through high school and graduate high school with honors without being able to read. It's one thing if it was a shitty school but even then the honors part is what's throwing me. That's the kind of shit where you should be able to spot someone who can't read in your fucking honors classes.

No, most do not.

Student population has increase significantly in the last 20 years. Many public schools are understaffed and have high retention rates.

So reading and grading over 100 papers and discussion boards is not efficient time-wise.

Plus, teachers are at the mercy of school districts to meet certain metrics to keep their jobs. Trust, she isn’t the only student to graduate (with honors) not knowing how to read and write.

Unfortunately, it’s not. With today’s technology (AI and online solvers), kids can get through honors and AP courses cheating. My daughter tells me often what goes on in her classes. It frustrates her because she works hard to earn her grade.

Don’t let honors and AP titles fool you. They aren’t like what they used to be. They are still useful for college preparation, but it doesn’t mean the students in those course are honors students. The only way to combat this is going back to traditional style teaching and Joe Clark’ing kids the fuck out of school. But then, where do we put them?

I talk to them, and the future is bleak if you’re looking for a career. There are more students in school than there are available jobs.

Bro to say you shouldn't use technology to educate kids is silly for several reasons.

1. The world is digital.
2. Kids learn way more on their phones and computers than they do out of a book.

Most of us were educated in the beginning of the computer era. So for us their was no google classroom or even email for students. You have to use technology to connect with the kids today. I teach kids and adults and multi modal instruction is necessary to keep anyone engaged. When have you been in a work meeting and they don't use a computer or a smart screen? Using technology in school teaches you how to use technology in the workplace.

To this end most kids and 50% of adults cannot read complex reading. IE a newspaper. We are becoming functionally illiterate for the same reason we are fat and out of shape. It's too easy to do things without reading. But the answer is not to make school harder it's teaching kids how to use chatgpt and grammerly to fix their writing.

We are ushering in a new industrial revolution. The job skills off the past (reading writing and arithmetic) are no longer the job skills of the future. Education is making itself obsolete by not changing with the times fast enough.

I started an apprentice program at my local high school and the difference you see when you teach children things connected to making money to things that just seem old and boring is night and day. We have to make school like job training not like you learning this basic shit just to function. The computers do all the basic shit for us.

I'm gonna be honest with you, I knew how to read since elementary school, they gave me a book back then to read after I graduated from elementary school and also when I graduated middle school which helped me be able to read being ahead of the students who never took the time to read books that were given to them after they graduated back then. Also, I had attended a shitty school, but I still was able to do my homework and also had to help other students that couldn't read nor know how to do basic math. Some students would come to class not finishing their homework where the teacher would have to go over the homework in class for the students to get all the answers, so that the teacher grade their homework.

But back in my high school years, I did a lot of dumb shit like skipping glass, leaving school early, messing with girls in the hallways, having sex in the classroom because no teacher was here to watch us which it was easy to get away with a lot of shit back then, but I still graduated from high school anyway with them giving me passing grades even though I wasn't attending class everyday.
