Considering Boston won a championship three years prior and the Lakers were the reigning back-to-back champions when Operation Voltron began, I don't think it is very hard to figure out which was the more relevant factor.
He wanted that kobe retirement contract that crippled the Lakers until Bron arrived.
He wasn't a max player at that point though but I get it for sentimental reasons

I would have paid him for what has done/meant to the team, he deserved it. That’s why the lakers did it. There’s a way to do business with people you respect. The heat did it to the wrong way
