I don't hate this idea. I think the only downside would be that I already think the election cycle is too long. But I understand that that is not the point.

If nothing else, it wouldn't be a bad idea to start floating some people out there early and see if there's any real voter interest or energy generated by someone. At this point, Dems need to start prepping a candidate or two for a big fight. Assuming we have an election (which I've never seriously said before), the vote margin is going to need to be insurmountable to even be close.
