Israeli army chief Halevi resigns over Oct 7th failures as Gaza ceasefire holds | DW News

The head of the Israeli military Herzi Halevi has announced that he will resign, citing security and intelligence failures that left Israel exposed to Hamas' surprise terror attack on October 7, 2023. In a letter to Israel's Defense Minister, Israel Katz, Halevi said he would remain in the post until the completion of the Israel Defense Force (IDF)'s investigation into the October 7 attack before standing down on March 6. Halevi's resignation comes as a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas holds in the Gaza Strip. Israel claims it has killed over 17,000 militants in the Gaza Strip, although it has not provided any evidence, while the Hamas-run health ministry in the enclave says over 47,000 Palestinians have been killed, the majority of whom they say were women and children. Hamas fighters joined in celebrations over the weekend as the ceasefire began, in a public demonstration that the group still commands loyalty even diminished by 15 months of war.

Middle East expert H. A. Hellyer joined DW to discuss how Hamas, which is considered a terrorist organsiation by many countries, remains in control of Gaza.

Al-Qassam publishes last week's operations in Beit Hanoun

The Al-Qassam Brigades announced a "series of death ambushes," carrying out multiple operations in recent weeks in Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza Strip.

The al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas, released footage documenting a "series of death ambushes" it conducted against occupation forces and military vehicles in Beit Hanoun, located in the northern Gaza Strip, in the weeks leading up to the ceasefire agreement.

The al-Qassam Brigades reported that they successfully targeted an Israeli soldier using a Ghoul sniper rifle on al-Sikka Street, inflicting severe injuries that resulted in the amputation of his hand and additional wounds to his body. Additionally, on the same street, the Brigades destroyed an Israeli Merkava tank with a powerful explosive device.

In a critical operation, al-Qassam fighters eliminated an Israeli sniper and his assistant before launching five TBG anti-personnel missiles at the same unit. The operation caused significant casualties, with Israeli forces confirming the deaths of two soldiers and severe injuries to 10 others, all from the Netzah Yehuda Battalion.

The battalions also targeted a house where an Israeli infantry force was fortified with an anti-fortification shell in Beit Hanoun, causing the house to collapse on the soldiers, resulting in casualties. The occupation acknowledged that five soldiers were killed and eight were seriously injured.

Al-Qassam fighters detonated an anti-personnel bomb directly targeting an advancing Israeli force from the Granite 932 Battalion in Beit Hanoun, finishing off the remaining soldiers at close range. In this operation, the commander of a company in the battalion, his deputy, and several Israeli soldiers were killed.

The fighters also detonated a highly explosive device in a house where an Israeli force was holed up, killing three of them and wounding several others with varying degrees of injury. Additionally, al-Qassam targeted another Israeli force that had taken refuge inside a house on Damra Street with two anti-personnel shells, resulting in the deaths and injuries of its members.

After the Gaza ceasefire agreement took effect on January 19, 2025, former head of the Israeli National Security Council, Giora Eiland, acknowledged that the war "ended in a resounding failure for Israel and that Hamas won."

Hamas sends message to families of Zionist prisoners in Gaza

Hamas sends message to families of Zionist prisoners in Gaza

Gaza - Saba:

The Office of Martyrs, Prisoners and Wounded in the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas sent a message in Arabic and Hebrew to the families of Zionist prisoners in the Gaza Strip:

The office said in a statement "With preparations for the release of a second batch of Zionist prisoners from the Gaza Strip, we followed with great disapproval the statements of many occupation leaders from the extremist Zionist government that threaten to resume war and genocide in the Gaza Strip.

The office explained that the Hamas movement and the resistance showed a strong commitment to preserving the lives of the Zionist prisoners in its possession, and securing their basic needs despite what our people faced of genocide and starvation, and the targeting and bombing of some detention centers several times over more than 15 months, as well as despite what the Palestinian people's detainees faced of killing and torture that shocks humanity in the occupation's prisons.

He added when reaching a ceasefire agreement and releasing the first batch of female prisoners, the movement was extremely keen to secure their delivery in a civilized manner and humane, unlike the situation in which our detainees were released.

At a time when everyone is facing very complex and painful moments, the Prisoners' Office said tt senses a great danger in the face of the successive statements of the Zionist political level, warning of these positions that portend a grave danger to everyone, including your loved ones who are still in the Gaza Strip.

He continued the recent statements issued by officials in the Zionist government, which indicate the intention to resume the war and genocide on Gaza, raise great concerns about the safety of your children and the safety of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians who are suffering under the burden of the siege and war.

The office warned the families of the Zionist prisoners that these statements not only threaten the return of escalation and genocide, but also put the safety of their loved ones in direct danger.

He called on the families of the prisoners, who are most affected by what might happen, to take a responsible humanitarian stance and to convey their voice to the Zionist government and its leaders who put their own personal and partisan interests above the public interest of ensuring the safety of your children and everyone in Gaza, and to abide by the agreements.

He said their voices are capable of bringing about real change, and their demands can make a difference in pushing towards stopping the recklessness of this right-wing government and its leaders and pushing them to abide by the agreements that guarantee the preservation of everyone's lives and the return of your loved ones to you.

The Office of Martyrs, Prisoners and Wounded in Hamas indicated that the war will only bring more destruction and losses, and will put the lives of the remaining prisoners in real danger and an unknown fate.

A video published on Wednesday shows Hussein Fayyad (Abu Hamza), commander of the Beit Hanoun Battalion in the Al-Qassam Brigades, appearing in Gaza eight months after the Israeli military announced his assassination in northern Gaza.

In the video, the date of which is not specified, Fayyad is seen meeting with citizens amidst the destruction caused by Israeli bombardment. He discussed the war and the losses sustained by the Israeli army, emphasizing its failure to achieve its declared objectives. He stated, “If the strong do not win, they are defeated; and if the weak are not defeated, they are victorious.”

Fayyad stressed that the occupation had only caused destruction but had not broken Gaza, which he described as unbent, dignified, and victorious.

Israeli researcher Or Bialikov commented on the video, calling Fayyad’s appearance in Beit Hanoun a “shame” for the Israeli army. He sarcastically remarked, “Clearly, the Israeli army killed another person.”

In May 2024, Israel had claimed to have assassinated Fayyad, accusing him of being behind several attacks on Israel, but his reappearance challenges that claim.

The ceasefire between Palestinian resistance forces and Israel, brokered by Qatar, Egypt, and the US, entered its first phase on Sunday, lasting 42 days, with further negotiations for the second and third phases.

Since October 2023, Israel’s campaign in Gaza, with US backing, has led to over 158,000 casualties, mostly women and children, and more than 14,000 missing persons.
