NBA ratings are down 48% since 2012. Down 28% this year alone on ESPN. Every other sports league is setting ratings records.

I didnt start watching basketball until the 80s; ABA was better than the NBA at least that what the old heads told me; until Magic and Bird came along in the 80s; and the NBA consume the ABA; the saved the NBA and ushered in 80s bball; which was fast pace and very motion improve based offense; not a lot of set calls and coach calling the game; then MJ came in and that change the game further; "ratings" shot thru the roof; but the game got slower; everyone wanted to see Mike; Mike really took the league by storm; shit was crazy; people love him watched; people hated him watched; but Phil Jack came along and then coaches begin to run set plays consistently; game got slower and slower because of that; but the economics of the NBA started to change also; mofos didnt really get paid until MJ change all that; and then tv contracts hit and then thats when contracts started getting higher and higher; then MJ left and ratings plummetted all the way around. And the game got completely slow and drudging; mofos thought that was defense because mofos was scoring points in the 80s and 90s; shit was awful; then you got the influx of high school players started to hit in from like 04-05 onward; that didnt help the game either; add in expansion teams and well now you have everyone spread out; so after years of non scoring play; then the NBA started to institute rules to speed up the game; game became faster but still bullshit was going on; and then more and more rules to start favoring offense and offensive players; and then the 2010s analytics hit; that has change the game forever...
My personal opinion is the game should be an improve fast paced game; with motion and screens and showing how athletic and great bball players really are; i want the best players playing together on the best teams; i want mofos who have midrange and post ups and 3 points shots; all hunting for the best open look; not the best 3 point shot; GS with KD reminded me of 80s ball(motion best shoot fast pace bball) because of how all could pass and shoot and dribble; they played like to me how the game should be played; rewatch that GS vs Cavs back to back series were GS swept them and beat them 4-1; or watch Lakers vs Celtics in 80s; watch that Lakers vs Detriot when I. Thomas was on one leg; shit was amazing; or Bulls vs Jazz; those series was great basketball; it some others also...That Philly team with Dr J and Malone, crazy; anyways enough ranting...

I'll say this I'm not gonna blame Steph and the Warriors for this trend because they had/have the players to do it. However,I blame the other 29 teams for this mess. I understand,it's a copycat league but most of the teams in the league never come close to having the players the Warriors had.
Analytics have killed basketball...imo..You have executives and coaches that think the mid-range shot is irrelevant. It's either a layup or three-point shot that they care about even though CP3,Kawhi and DeRozan prove time and time again that the mid-range shot ain't dead.
Then, have big men that have no business jacking up threes instead of being at the post.Then,you have players like Trae Young that jack up threes and miss most of the time.
What's crazy,these teams rather concentrate on the offense than the defense and these teams wonder why they never win the title. I'm not saying the defense should to be the Bad Boys Pistons,Sonics and Bulls but you need two teams that's at least in the top 15 in defense to make it competitive in the playoffs.
Also,the players are the blame too because they don't put any effort on that side of the ball. Especially,in the all star game but put a lot more effort in pick up games

The six other teams, along with their penalties, who had Competitive Balance Tax (CBT) payrolls higher than $237 million, which triggers the tax, include the New York Yankees ($62,512,111), the Philadelphia Phillies ($14,351,954), the Atlanta Braves ($14,026,496), the Texas Rangers ($10,807,196), the Houston Astros ($6,483,041) and the San Francisco Giants ($2,421,788).
The Dodgers, Mets, Yankees and Phillies were taxed at a base rate of 50% because they've been over the tax in three or more consecutive years. The Braves and Rangers exceeded the threshold for the second consecutive year, earning a 30% tax rate. The Astros, Giants and Cubs were first time offenders, earning a 20% tax on overages.
If a team dips below the threshold in any one season, its tax rate resets to 20%.
Because the Dodgers, Mets and Yankees were also all $60 million or more over the $237 million threshold, they were taxed an additional 60%, making their marginal rate at the maximum 110%. Meanwhile, the Phillies, Braves, Rangers and Astros were all between $20 million and $40 million over the threshold, triggering an added 12.5% tax to their marginal rate.
A team's CBT figure is determined using the average annual value of each player's contract on the 40-man roster, plus any additional player benefits. Every team's final CBT figure is calculated at the end of each season. The Dodgers' CBT payroll for 2024 was $353,015,360, while the Cubs were just over the threshold at $239,851,546.
The first $3.5 million of proceeds is used to fund player benefits. Fifty percent of the remainder go to player retirement funds, while the other half goes into the Supplemental Commissioner's Discretionary Fund and is redistributed among teams that receive revenue sharing.

I stopped watching the NFL and the NBA after covid/2020 and haven't been back since and i haven't been able to put my finger on why seeing that i've been in love with both since i was about 10.
But judging by what i've been hearing the last couple years and these comments i guess i'm not missing out on much.
Also, star power/it factor/charisma is a big deal and if the so called best players don't have that and too many dudes is 3pt happy, then i guess this is what you get.
I have the league pass and half the time I can't see any games.

To fix the game, eliminate the charging foul. Put a heavy emphasis on contact while driving the ball. Make it worth driving by getting free throws and putting the other team in foul trouble.
Also, what I haven't seen mentioned here is the superteam era..
A lot of fans lost interest when for a decade, there would be a super team - the Heat when they got LeBron, the Warriors when they got KG that meant for a decade no other team really had a shot. I know a couple teams snuck in to win a chip, but for the most part, 99% of teams didn't have a chance.
They lost a lot of fans during that era, and they haven't come back.
