The Milgram experiment was a series of social psychology experiments conducted by Yale psychologist Stanley Milgram to study obedience to authority figures. The experiments involved subjects being told to administer electric shocks to other participants, who were actually confederates of Milgram's. The shocks were fake, but the subjects were led to believe they were real and were told to increase the voltage each time the "learner" made a mistake.
The experiments found that over 60% of participants would continue to shock the "learner" even after they appeared to be unconscious. This result contradicted the predictions of experts polled by Milgram.
