Here's another perspective I didn't consider.....
I was listening to a podcast about the economics around health-care/ Ozempic.....
The US spends hundreds of billions on health-care related care. Something like 16% of adults are overweight, 6% qualify as obese/severely obese.....
Studies (short-term) show that Ozempic and similar products work. They suppress your appetite and help the way your body breaks down the foods you eat. You lose weight. Gastric bypass/sleeves work. And people who are obese/severely obese but don't currently have diabetes benefit the most from these options.
Seems simple enough, a little extra money now, to save money on care related expenses later.
So why aren't these options covered by most insurance companies?
Because insurers aren't that loyal. Since most insurance is tied to a person's employer and the average American doesn't work the same job for 10+ years, the insurance companies aren't betting on capturing those "savings" later.
Basically companies estimate that it will take 5-10 years to see the benefits of those weight intervention solutions. Howeverz the average American changes insurance companies every 2-3 years. So why would they spend the thousands $$ now when more than likely the formally obese person will be at a new insurance company 5-10 years later and that company will be the one to benefit from that upfront cost.
I say all that to say. Cancer cures/ treatments are incredibly expensive. But the insurance company is betting on too much churn for the upfront cost to be a "savings" for them later. So there is no long term fiscal benefit for the companies to cover or invest in known effective treatments.
There's gotta be a doctor on this muhfucka to corroborate or refute this, but it's my understanding that what most people commonly think of as cancer is a much more complicated animal than we understand, and because there's such a wide spectrum of causes, aggravators, and treatment, it's really fucking difficult to find what would qualify as a "cure". in plain terms, it just not that simple.
