Money: Tipflation explained: Professor explains explosion of tipping prompts at restaurants, cafes & businesses

I’m staying at 20%. Don’t need to read the article.

I noticed at breakfast yesterday that 20 is now the minimum. They done lost their damn mind. Even had an option for 35% on the card reader. For some shrimp and grits!?!?!?

Hell naw, fam. 20% it is.

Article was about them prompting you to tip on stuff that isn't where you were served like at a table.

Just ordering takeout and they shove the tip awkward checkout on you. While the person gives you the look like you're expected to tip for takeout.

Not only is food so much more expensive, but people expect a tip too, along with charging you extra for a sauce or a plastic fork I've seen.

^^^^^

All this.

This shit has to stop, not too long ago the ruke was 15% or double the tax. Restaurants will suffer as people will not want to dine in as dining out will become unaffordable.

There is little to no tipping culture in Europe.
been at least 18 percent here in nyc for decades and that’s automatic gratuity on the bill for a lot of places

For as I know, the automatic gratuity came into play for sit down restaurants with more than two people being served which totally makes sense, to me anyway.

Has the rule changed for automatic gratuity where you at?

That’s what I was referring to most sit down spots.

Unless it's different where you're at, I thought that only applies to parties over 6 people. Never heard of over two

Haven't dealt with it personally, but I thought I seen posts over the years where some places tried to be slick and slip the mandatory gratuity onto small "groups"

Could of been maybe a more upscale type place maybe especially during covid. But that's absurd for 2-3 people to be forced.

I'm always tipping min 20%, even if I had poor service. I feel like maybe the person may be green or something or having a bad day. But to force me to pay, nah don't do that to me. But that's for sitting down service. But takeout, I'm not doing that. It's ridiculous.

cause fuck then
Recently was at Wingstop. Ordered just wings and fries, didn't get the "meal" for the wife and I. The woman already gave me my receipt and I forgot my wife likes flats, and I always tell them make her flavor 'flats'. The woman was like I can't change that. I said I always just pay extra for it like $1. She said sorry I can't change it. Then I said ok whatever, can I get 2 blue cheese with it? She said I'd have to charge you extra for that. I said forget it.

Either I break $100 bill in my pocket or give her my card again for 25-50 cents?

The other side is stupid people at some places with no common sense. You could of easily told the guy in the back just flats on that one flavor and could of slid me two sauces.

But it's ny fault not remembering all that prior to paying for my meal. Wasn't trying to get over, but they lose points for simple chit like that. And how would I of felt if I tipped

The chick at hooters got nice tip
Chick in the hooter her are the fucking JV or peewee league. Shit is terrible.

Used to go in there for wings, beer and solitude. Can’t even sit in there no more without pissing myself off. I go to Mac’s speedshop and watch them rock and roll white girls when I need to get out now.

If you do a good job, I will give you a generous tip. I’m not rich so I cannot give 35% but 20% is the best I could do. If I was to run into more money, sometimes I would be a little bit more generous.Ccc

They trying to normalize tipping for takeout and that aint cool at all
Hate that. Don't know if it's like this everywhere but a lot of restaurants out my way, when you swipe your card, you're prompted to the tip part before the actual pay your bill part. Got caught slipping the 1st time I saw it and gave chicken shack damn near a $20 tip cause I thought I was entering in the amount I was paying

i feel like this is a way to keep the working class infighting amongst one another...so now you're server or delivery guy is mad at you for not tipping or not tipping enough...instead of being mad at his employer for not payin' him a livable wage....

It actually was when Covid came out and people considered delivery people and retail people essential workers. People were very generous giving them high tips for their service. Than that started getting pushed through social media and media to be kind and generous to them. Well once you introduce people to a certain kind of treatment and money it’s hard to fall back from it or shall I say the people that were receiving now have a certain expectation and might not want to go back to less funds. So this expectation is trying to be forced as the norm. Also lots of bizz saw this generous funding and saw it as another income stream that they could make money on and wanted to take advantage of it and keep that mindset alive

The joke is on the people (consumers) with this tipping shit. There's inflation so the tip percentage also has to increased? BS

An understanding of basic arithmatic will allow you to understand that as the base price increases so the tip amount increases.

I go into a restaurant, I tip 15 percent for service. If it's good service, then I'll increase my percentage. Twice the tax as a tip amount is merely a simple way to do the same calculation.

It's because most don't understand simple math that allows some places to get away with this BS.

Think about it, increase the tip amount until we finally get to 90 percent, 100 percent. GTFOH with the BS.

And you get zero tip for take out. Dah fuck!

Shit I need to be waiting yo tables...lol
Shitty services deserves the same tip .none! Plenty of times I have told the wife fuck it im out.. :giggle: plus i aint tipping no 20%

There's obviously things that I wouldn't tip, If I had someone being rude on purpose or I get some racist tones, then I just will refuse to eat there, I'm quick to just change venue. But I've had times when service was slow or people forgot things I asked for, I won't wig out over that.

But I've rarely had an instance where I wouldn't of gave 20%. Just simple for me to take 10% of the price and double it. Been doing it forever prior to them adding amounts now on receipts.

i ordered online from Texas Roadhouse the other day.....and they had a tip section on there when i went to checkout on my order.
They add the tip automatically, and you have to go and manually remove the tip before submitting your order.
I was like wtf? mufuckas crazy.
