I haven't read the posts but this attitude is BS and racist. Real Estate is the most accessible tool to amass generational wealth for Black folks. Most of our wealthy have gained wealth through Real Estate. This is despite decades of redlining in which CACs have gotten generations of a head start. Most of the whining about landlords and wealth inequality are mediocre white men. They feel disenfranchised because they aren't living the lifestyles that they feel they deserve and blame others for it. Notice that the "wealth inequality" activists never mention Reperations which is the most obvious example of what should be done to address wealth inequality.
Don't hop on this bandwagon and get some rental real estate. We are headed for another housing downtown and property will be on sale. Don't miss out brothers. The tax benefits are much better for landlords than employees so income is not equal dollar for dollar earned.
I'm the kind of renter that follows the California residential renters guide. If we're both following the same book then I have no beef with you.
However, a kid broke one of my windows at my house in Hayward. A week later the property manager gave me an eviction notice because I failed to fix it within 48 hours as per the property manager's contract.
Problem was, my contract wasn't with the property manager. It was with the owner who hired the property manager after I moved in. Still I had to miss work to fight the eviction in court.
Don't get me started on the time that him and his lawyer walked in unannounced while my wife was taking a shower.
Another place had rats and no heat. My roommates and I addressed the landlord several times to get him to fix it and he ignored us. We went on a rent strike until he addressed the issues and it turned into world war III. His tactics included, but we're not limited to, yanking the front door off the hinges, disabling all of the electrical outlets, padlocking the water main, falsely reporting my car stolen, falsely reporting my roommate for pulling a knife on him, and filing an eviction notice without posting it so we would miss our court date.
At my last place the landlord refuse to let my roommate's husband on the lease because of a repossession. Never mind that he'd already been living there for 10 years and the repossession happened after he moved in. Then this landlord harassed me on my phone to get him information about the debt. When I told him that I didn't know and was none of my business he threatened to kick out the whole household kids and all.
So when I and others talk about landlords being parasite this is what we're talking about. Being a good tenant who pays the rent on time in full and still having to worry about whether or not you'll have a home. Also, of the landlords I mentioned one was white, one was black, one was Asian. Race isn't the issue, the behavior is.
