I feel like he's your George Washington-- The Heat had a solid history before winning a championship in year 18. I'd put up statues for Mourning, Wade and Riley. Spo down the line.

I don't think so. Sports fans don't appreciate players who didn't win championships.
I knew Mourning played a key role in the finals in 06 but he was much better in the regular season than I thought he was:
Mourning started in 20 games out of a total of 65 games played, averaging 7.8 points and 5.5 rebounds, while finishing third in the league with 2.7 blocks per game despite playing as a reserve.
But that 06 team isn't the Mourning Heat team that the statue would be honoring.
The lousy ass Knicks don't even have a statue for Patrick Ewing. I think classy organizations should appreciate their most significant players who define the organization regardless. (The Heat are the only team added to the league in the last 40 years with a history worth putting up statues IMO.)

Their fans don't care about that era enough for it to happen and Zo didn't accomplish much. Jimmy Butler has already surpassed him in playoff scoring and had more memorable moments. Guess you gone say he deserves one too.
Also Pat Riley did NOT draft Zo, that plays a major part in who they are honoring as well.

You could argue that Jimmy Butler was a better Heat player-- I'd disagree but it could be a conversation-- but I don't think you could reasonably argue about who was more significant.
Riley is crafting the narrative that Wade (the guy he drafted) is their first star and that's why he bestowed him this honor first. Zo will be a player only die hard original 90's Heat fans and trivial pursuit players will remember 20 years from now.
I'm neither of those-- I don't think you can tell the story of 1990s basketball without mentioning Alonzo Mourning. The latter half of the decade, the Bulls were the dominant team but you can't tell their story without Ewing's Knicks, Miller's Pacers and Mourning's Heat.

1990s basketball nostalgia is about one player. You cant spend over a decade only promoting one guy now expect folks to care about his lesser opponents that didn't win?
History doesn't work like that. There are no young people today thinking about the 90s Pacers, Heat, and Knicks because those teams didn't win.
The oldest player in the league last season averaged 3.9 points, 1.6 rebounds, 0 assists and shot 34.5% from the field in 2023. Tonight he gets his jersey retired. Some of the same fans honoring him make it a point to slight the oldest player in the league this season. He's currently averaging 24.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, 7.6 assists and shooting 52.4% from the field.

Literally everything about how 90s basketball is portrayed is rooted in making Michael Jordan look more impactful than he was. 6 expansion teams came in the league during that era, you believe this was the height of basketball play? Give us specific games we can watch that showcase the greatness of the era?
