HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — Dave Chappelle brought the laughs Wednesday night at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, but he wasn't amused when someone in the audience was using a cellphone to record him.

Chappelle cut short his show after catching the man in the act, calling him out and alerting him to security before scolding the audience and walking off the stage, shaking his head in apparent anger.

It happened near the end of his performance during an exchange with an audience member. That's when he noticed a man near the front row recording him.

Chappelle was quick to point the man out and admonish him for doing so, explaining to those in attendance why he doesn't allow phones at his show. The controversial comedian, known for his raunchy humor that has led to criticism from the LGBTQ+ community, equated a phone being pointed at him to a gun.

Cellphones and other recording devices are prohibited during his shows, and Wednesday night's performance was no exception. Attendees were notified of this when purchasing tickets, and there was signage throughout Hard Rock Live reminding patrons of this.

Attendees had to place their phones in Yondr bags that were locked before entering the venue and could only be opened at designated areas outside the theater.

Even DJ Trauma, who provided the on-stage introductions, warned the audience before the show began that phones were not allowed and anyone caught with one would be escorted out.

Not everyone heeded the warning.

It was the second of a five-night stand at the Seminole Hard Rock between Christmas and New Year's Eve.

Thats cool but even though it was close to the end of the show y not finish?

So... If he got the person, why stop the show for everyone else? I know tiks weren't cheap
This is how i feel! This doesn't make any sense!

I saw him a month ago, seemed like he had his set 100% together and nothing felt like a riff to me.

They opened by playing the intro to his next Netflix special. Maybe they taped some of it that night, not sure. I felt a little cheated-- or, more reasonably, disappointed-- at paying for what seemed to just amount to a sneak peak of a special everyone would have access to in a month.

And that month is up... It drops this weekend, NYE:

He'd rather disappoint 20,000 people than embolden 200,000.

Another thing that disappointed me about seeing him live was I heard a lot of it last year when it leaked-- He seems to have stuck with that material 90% unchanged. It was so long ago I didn't expect that.

So in a way, the leaks make the real thing less special. It really devalues his work. I understand why he would send that message.

Nah... i get the not wanting things to leak and stuff... but finish the show...and yes i went to his show this year in the chi and a lot of material was things i heard before and a lot of it wasnt....but it was still a good show.. i think they use the same material for at least 2 to maybe 3 years then add a lil at a time...hell like Lavelle crawford...material is like 3 years old...

I get your perspective. I'd have been pissed if the show I went to got cut short.

Let's say this happened and got publicity three more times-- What do you think is more likely, enough people are discouraged by the possibility of that happening to them that his sales are affected or enough people are aware of that possible consequence that less people film him?

Also, despite being disappointed at hearing material a second time, the fresh shit was good enough that I'm looking forward to seeing it in the special a second time.

Some of you are thinking bout it from the audiences' perspective.
It has nothing to do with the audience and everything to do with the contract between the promoters, the venue and his representatives.

Usually, especially in the instance of comedians doing large scale shows, there is some language that says cell phones and recording devices will not be allowed. If they take your phones when you enter the venue, you know its in the contract.

This is a message to the venue. Since Dave and other large scale comedians have contracts with companies like Nexflix, etc., leaks of their material devalue those contracts. Dave did right for himself. The venue let a phone slip and that leak can devalue his material for next show he wants to sell by a lot of contract points. The venue is hurting his contract negotiations. He ended his set because if they let one phone slip, who knows how many others were recording? He left so that the rest of his material has no chance of being recorded by another source.
To the audience, its all about being entertained and having a good time. To the comedian, its more about having fresh material to sell. You never know what is in the sizzle reel that he sends to a streaming company to sell his next show. If the joke that he told gets posted on social media, when the reel gets sent to an exec and they saw it go viral on the internet somewhere, they can easily use that as a talking point in a contract negotiation as a reason not to pay him as much as he's asking for.

Long story short: Video leaks fuck with his money.

I've been to one of his shows with the bags, The procedure is, empty your pockets, turn the phone off, put it in the bag. Hell, if you had a watch that they think can record audio, that goes in too. So basically, security wasn't doing their job. Who's to say that there wasn't someone else recording that he just didn't see?

I don't blame him. Probably went straight back to bitch out the promotor and to make sure his team doesn't fuck with them anymore.

is the psychological beat down effect, its like when you on a plane, and some asshole doesnt want to turn off

his phone or put it away, or wont follow instructions... they DISEMBARK THE WHOLE FUCKIN PLANE,

because they want you to have the ultimate walk of shame with people wanting to fuck you up,

as you shame walk...

He wanted the person filming to feel the wrath of the crowd...

the crazy shit is, Im sure its in the contract that if ONE person has a phone, he whole audience

has to go.... thats a lot of pressure to encourage folks DONT TRY THAT SHIT, you aint just fuckin it up for yourself

you fuckin it up for everybody....

Dave is smart as fuck, who would want to go to your shows if they see it on the net for free...

The guy filming was a fuckin complete absoulte asshole!!!

If he thinks that bag is foolproof... I've been to his and rocks shows before and have seen plenty phones get through.
He just can continue that Ms. Lauren Hill act, and because then if refunds aren't issued, he'll have to go back to small venues(which he prefers I'm sure)

As messed up as the outcome seems, mofo's knew the rules going in and one shithead went against them. I side with Dave on this one, even though I would have been equally pissed as the other patrons. Oh yeah, if ya gotta take your frustrations out on someone, I say take them out on the mugg that was filming. Maybe an ER visit will prevent him from ever doing that again.

No phones is standard for a lot of comedic acts; not just Dave Chappelle.

Again, what he did was to make an example out of the venue for not holding up their end of the contract. You can get mad at Dave if you want to but your anger is misdirected. Hold the venue responsible for not holding up their end of the deal.

I understand your point, but I've never subscribed to the overall point especially given the type of comic Dave is. In general, if something entertains me, I'll likely still enjoy it years later. Using Dave, I recently watched Chappelle Show skits and still found them funny. In the last year, I heard or seen people reference the where's Ja line, understood the reference and still thought it was funny. I'm not buying the whole my jokes being heard or told hurts me. People buy movies and music because they enjoyed the content and intend on using it for years on some level. Shit can get old but that isn't the same as losing quality. Even with live entertainment, some people will go see a performance multiple times and it's the same show/tour.

I can more so respect I'm working material and it's not necessarily done yet. However, in my opinion you shouldn't be doing real/big shows in those instances. I'll also give you it could be a form of lose revenue for a performer. Some people won't pay for what they can get for free. However, leaks could help by way of promotion/marketing. In Dave's case, I'm assuming the special is already paid for by Netflix, so I'm not how this would hurt him high level.

Honestly I feel like in general Dave's ego is getting bigger and he's believing the hype. Have the person who was recording removed and continue the show. You are hurting multiple paying fans for one disrespectful one. As far as people doing the same in the future, add a clause in your contract that the venue will be fined for leaks and phones. Ultimately, this was their failure.

I saw comments saying this happened at the end of the show. If that's the case and lets say Dave was giving extra I don't see an issue.

Its like you know how sometimes, a muthafucka has to make an example out of an issue ONE time, so muthafuckas

could act accordingly ALL the time....

Now I bet audience members would snitch dudes out on some,

you aint fuckin up MY night with your hard head antics, type shit...

Feel me??

Thank you. Bunch of dumb fucks trying to see it their way. I’m glad he walked off.

I'm not questioning the logic. I disagree with the response. Honesty question because I don't recall, but did he stop the show when someone ran on stage? If not, find a better response to unwanted behavior that doesn't hurt paying customers.

Now had Dave refunded the audience or done something on their behalf, that would be different. I'd even accept that this was mentioned as a possibility at the time people purchased tickets. However, I don't agree with performers throwing tantrums and walking off except in certain circumstances like being threatened/ potential physical harm. Dave did that because he is entitled and believes there won't be any real negative response. It's similar to Lauren Hill constantly showing up hours late or not at all.

This isn't the first time someone has gotten a phone in and won't be the last
. Hold the venue accountable and not your customers.

I hope the next guy that pulls out a cell phone, I hope the users of this forum murder him/her. It’s obvious you guys are stone cold morons.

dont get me wrong I would be pissed to if I had to leave, but I would be pissed off at the asshole with the phone only,

he knew what it was, and STILL decided to be a fuckin dick!!

I do see what you are sayin, in that......

You dont punish a whole crowd who is DOING RIGHT.. for the ONE asshole that is doing WRONG....

but the best way to get that ONE asshole back, is to have the whole crowd turn on him...

I kinda see both sides.

I would be with you except we don't know if anyone did anything to the person with the phone. To our knowledge, everyone shared the same punishment. Not that it matters much but was the person recording?

Even saying he knew what it was isn't completely true. He may have been cool with risking being kicked out. He didn't know his behavior would stop the show for everyone. Not only that he was probably happy to not be the only person impacted, so the guy really hasn't learned anything.

The things that some of you are assuming is that people care or will care about those around them. In all likelihood, why would he or future people care about strangers night being ruined. Unless like you said something happened to them by another fan. If anything, you'll have more people doing this believing Dave will stop the show. You don't like his gay jokes. Don't run on stage. All you have to do is get a phone in and pull it out. Dave will stop his show and the jokes will not be heard that night.

Good point it does make it easy to sabatoge his shows... but trust me, if the dude aint get screamed ON, you better believe it was a mostly

cac crowd..

because WE definitely wouldve been sceaming on dude who fucked up everybody night...it also means something if Dave was on stage for a minute,

If Dave was on stage for more than ninety minutes, then the audience pretty much got what they paid for... not sure how long he was on stage,

but, IF he was on stage for more than ninety min, can the audience really complain tho???

He could always fall on the excuse, that the camera interfered with the art. Now he's not in the right mental space to finish the show.......
