Any Rolex Owners?

I’m not a baller by any means. My Grandad was able to buy a brand new one in the 70’s for about $1,500. That’s impossible now, but they hold value and it’s always been something I have wanted. My questions are:

Do you own one?
What model?
Do you believe it was worth the ticket?
Any suggestions on a vendor?

Since this is my first one, I’m willing to look at used, 43-44mm and I don’t want to go over $11k.

Any help is appreciated!

$1,500 in 1970 = $11,808.89 in 2023.

I bought mine in the late 80's. It has been serviced only once due to the glass crystal being damaged from a bad fall.

One thing to keep in mind is that when you do send any Rolex in for servicing, it will be completely and thoroughly checked and serviced. Had I known that when I purchased mine, I would have purchased a used one.

I did not buy it for the bling; I bought it to last a lifetime. So far, I have not been disappointed.

I purchased a fake Rolex Submariner in China in 2018 for $50
Only to the trained eye, can one tell that its a knockoff.
I mean its damn near fool proof.

It works and I have no problems at all and get complimented all the time on it
Which is crazy within itself.

My wife on the other hand has a real one and she has buyers remorse.
There's always something wrong with it.
She always tells me she wishes she had a knockoff.

My advice is that its probably not worth the coin.
Its a good conversation piece though.
Fellow Rolex owners will go out their way to ask you about it and share stories.
They notice them from a mile away.

Great info. Where did you do that calculation. I bought a 14k chain back in 1998 for $600, 28” I forget the weight. I have it cleaned a few months ago and she told me today, that chain would sell for about $20k. Or she can give me $2k for scrap, I looked at her like she was stupid, because she was to say some dumb shit like that to me! Again, Thank My Guy!

Thanks for the insight. I have been on the used tip for that reason. Also, I’m my head, I can adjust my attitude better with issues if it’s used opposed to brand new. Bad logic, but it’s mine to deal with.

hmm is it just a all gold chain? If it is you are not selling it for anywhere near 20k.

Have you had it serviced by an authorized Rolex dealer? My reason for asking is because when they service it, they normally send them to Switzerland for servicing instead of servicing them locally for movement-related issues. They basically overhaul the watches. I had mine serviced in 2003. The cost was roughly $1,700.00 in total.

I live by the advice from an old jeweler I knew in my teens, don’t sell any of your jewelry! Hold on to it. They will more than likely just melt it down for scrap. Plus, it was a limited production. You probably can’t find a picture of a Versace link necklace. It was a steal! I’ll never sell it. I won’t sell any of my jewelry, unless it’s a real fucked up situation for me and mine!

My Best Friend got a similar deal in NYC in like 2000, $50 bucks for a Presidential, box, papers and a realistic look and time keeping. He also got a full LV travel set for $150 with all the authentic packaging. He came up on that trip and all that shit still looks Amazing!

Much appreciated! I’m looking at the Blue face DateJust!
I forgot to mention I got my Yatchtmaster II appraised last year and it increase 58% in value.

I just did a quick GOOGLE search and the same Datejust II is going at ~132% increase since I bought mine 8 yrs ago.

Forget that value stuff.
Cause if you try to sell it, no one is buying it for 58% more than retail.

Thank You! Much appreciated!
If you really wanna go down that road, which I don't recommend...
Go to an authorized dealer like Tourneau or Bucherer.
Or watchfinder.com and buy from Japan. The Japanese are honorable for the most part.

Where you're going to run into trouble is the case size you're looking for.
As far as I know, there are only a couple of models that are 43-44mm. Sea Dweller and Yachtmaster.
I had always dreamed about a rolex explorer 1 but actually seeing it in person was very disappointing. It looked like a ladies watch on me.

I don't know of any datejust bigger than like 41 mm, though there certainly could be. I don't keep up with the watch world like I used to.

Yes I own several of them.

I would really suggest a stainless steel datejust 41 with the white gold fluted bezel. I just got one for $10,500. This model is very versatile and they hold their value the best. Avoid gold and steel models.

i aint tryin to spend that much on a watch.
as much as i wear my Bulova's.....i barely look at em when i wanna know the time.....im always lookin at my phone instead.

any suggestions on a dealer?
Go to a local authorized dealer and familiarize yourself with one salesperson. Put yourself on their list for your particular watch and you will receive a call when your watch becomes available.

That's the one I got. Fluted bezel or nothing :itsawrap:

In the military I brought a fake black face and gold one in Korea in the early 90's, $25 each. My uncle who was on that shit stole them when I got back to the states.

Yes,
super simple plane basic one that I was gifted. I assume it cost a couple grand.

I dont think I would buy one now cuz the market is crazy. If you had one already you did good
