Discussion: FARGO on FX @10pm Update: Season 5 w/ John Hamm

All caught up with episode 3.

Hoped for more scenes with Dot.

Enjoying the bad guy character Munch, but didn’t care for the odd backstory stuff dating way back. It was too out there and suspending of disbelief IMO. The stuff that works way better with him is simply him menacingly saying “I live here now”, or him going after Hamm’s son’s sidekick, etc.

Sidenote ... dude working at the gun store has small roles on Joe Pickett and Billy the Kid respectively.

I have to do something I almost never do.

I have to re watch episode 3.

For some reason it lost me.

Hamm has been amazing so far but I'm not sure about this season yet.

Yeah - I'm gonna read and listen to some of the recaps this week ahead, per normal.

3 of us watched it last night and the storyline stuff with Munch completely lost us. Just took us out of the story / episode really ... but enjoying everything else thus far.

Give us more of Dot in the gun shop.

Funny side note ... my dad's girlfriend is named Dorothy. And her nickname is Dot / Dottie.

Initially when it flashed back generations I thought it was gonna be funny & strange in a typical Fargo way.

But it was just odd / creepy ... even for a Halloween-themed episode.

Didn't add much to the character's origin (story) really ... or at least I don't think it did.

Just keep it more present day & his capable violence, as has been exemplified thus far. Keep him coming after the likes of Dot, Jon Hamm & his douchebag son Gator, etc.

I cant wait til Gator get GOT...great job by the actor taking a completely different role from what made him famous in Stranger Things.
Everyone this season has a great season so far and the closest to the OG movie

i really appreciate the casting of Juno Temple, John Hamm, Lamorne Morris & Joe Kerry have really been killing it. i love seeing characters no for one thing doing something completely different

Well said - looking forward to Gator's eventual demise too.

Like you noted ... great job by casting too with the 4 names listed.

Season 3

Finished the season last night.

Started off odd and was losing me for the first 3 episodes with what was presented, but it came together by episode 4.

The villain Varga played out well as well as that little Asian dude who worked with him. That semi command center Varga had was slick.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead, that bird would definitely get me in trouble, the Thirst is definitely strong in her.

The mute Wes from season one had a cameo, which help connects the seasons together.

Lots of deaths to close it out, some were not expected.

That last scene with Varga was done well. I thought the scene was gonna play out for a full 5 minutes waiting to see who would come thru the door, they played it out like “The Sopranos” which was brilliant.

So far it looks like Varga and Wes should reappear in the future.

Gonna start season 4 sometime this week.

Thanks for your updates and recaps, @blackbull1970 .

You'll be all caught up with the series later this month and able to join the current season (only 3 eps in) in real-time.

Good stuff.

Was looking into Fargo and discovered that the actress in Season 3 who played Deputy Gloria, she is in the MCU cast as “Proxima Midnight”.

The makeup and costume definitely hid her.

This is one of the TV recap episodes I've listened to in recent years. These guys really nerd out and break things down well. They were all over the references & nods to Wizard of Oz throughout season 4 a few years ago. Explaining numerous things along the way.

In the 1st link below for the current season, one of the cohosts explains sin eaters ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sin-eater ) which we found odd and creepy from the episode.

In the 2nd link ... listen for them breaking down Jon Hamm's home life with the wive(s) photos. And one of the funnier moments is them reading off some of the items on Dot's grocery list, haha.

@Complex

What's interesting too is that sometimes the best format is to just keep it simple and straight-forward (TV and movies). Don't need to suspend everyone's disbelief with the supernatural aspects, as you mentioned.

Everyone understands people who are tougher than they look & have a past ... violent confrontations ... cat & mouse games with people going after one another, etc. Stick to those story arcs and we're happy.

Thought episode 4 was much better.

Those opening scenes at the house amounted to approx' 14 - 15 minutes of the episode. Picked up nicely right where it left off at the end of ep 3. Serious consequences.

Enjoyed the scene at the hospital with the 6 people involved too.

How are you liking season 4 thus far?
Season 4

Finished the season last night.

The opening was perfect giving the backstory of the white criminal families and showing the black girl dealing with her school.

Also, got to see the backstory of Milligan from season one and his family history. The season also did a good job showing the racism of the time not just against Blacks but what non-WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant) had to deal with.

That bat shit crazy nurse was pure comedy.

When I saw the trailer I was scratching my head seeing Chris Rock as a lead, he definitely impressed me with how he handled the role. The only thing that had me scratching my head is with Chris going to the White bank with his credit card thing. It was pretty obvious what was going to happen.

Timothy Olyphant did a good job of redoing his “Justified” character for the series.

The finale was done well with the new Italian boss fully explaining to Chris the big story. It should be a lesson with Black folks in the underground world that they need to unite and work together instead of fighting each other for dumb shit and crumbs. But unfortunately Black folks to this day have not figured that out. You have strength and power in numbers, not working as individuals making it easy for outsiders to come in and “Divide and Conquer”.

The supernatural element with the ghost of the old man didn’t take away from what is going on similar to the UFO in season one. I suspect we will find out more about the UFO and the old man in future episodes, hopefully.

Overall, season 4 holds up with season one. Hopefully I will start season 5 here soon, there will be 10 episodes total and 5 have debuted so far.

Looking forward to them.

Thanks for your review!

Glad you thought the season held up well.

I think what worked well was the number of characters involved. Plenty of people to like and dislike.

Definitely interesting seeing the origin story / history for Milligan. A show like Fargo surprises you by doing that kind of thing. Going back nearly 30 years from 1979 to 1950-51.

Nurse Mayflower was truly a piece of shit. Well acted by Jessie Buckley.

FYI

I watched the back seasons on Hulu (with ads) where I have the Disney bundle.

Disney loaded up the back seasons with commercials. Each episode is crammed with 5 to 7 commercials.

They did this cuz they know folks are going back catching up on prior seasons along with others watching cuz there is nothing else on due to the Hollywood strikes creating a backlog.

Hulu normally shows 3 commercials in hour long programs.

First two eps of newest season…. Not feeling it…. Hoping for a slow burn, maybe I’ll come around. Gotta get caught up….. it gets better, right?
