Chalky White's Dinner Scene... Speak on it, Fam.

When I first saw this scene years ago. I agreed with Chalky 100%. I watched it again today, and I still agree with him 100%.

BGOL has people from various backgrounds etc... I'm just curious, Fam. I felt that Chalky's wife was out of line. Does anyone here feel that Chalky was the one who was out of line?

On another note. Whoever wrote the dialog for this scene (and the show) were masters of their craft. To my fellow writers on the board, what were your thoughts about the writing?

Although I understand that there is constant butting of heads between the country folk and bougie folk, seems like he should have dealt with that privately with his wife. It's what would have been expected if it was the other way around.

On the other hand, I don't understand why beans and rice (if I understood correctly), couldn't have been included with the meal. Since I am the antithesis of bougie, I guess I didn't realize bean and rice was too much of a common folk food to serve at a special dinner.

Excellent scene. Chalky was a highly intelligent man although illiterate. He saw his request being denied so that the family didn't 'look bad" in front of "proper company". Fuck that. I pay the bills in this bitch. Country or not. You are going to respect the man of this house, I don't give a fuck who the guest is.

Never watched the show so this comment from youtube was helpful:

For some context prior to this episode Chalky had already noticed subtle hints that his family viewed him as backward, country and uneducated. When his daughter asked him a school question his son incredulously stated "Why would you ask Dad?" And when he specifically requested a type of food for this dinner, his entire family gave each other side-eye glances like "we're not making that." Chalky feels like the odd man out with a sophisticated, educated and cultured family who looks down on him and his country ways despite the fact that everything they have is due to him and his country ways.

Black eyed peas and rice, specifically, is hoppin' john. And I love that shit....damn it is good.

He should have slapped everyone at that table....and she needed to be corrected right then and there. If she got the nerve to tell me that ain't proper food for our guest and I got country ways, then I got the right to correct her ass immediately.....because everything at this table and everything you see is what I paid for...all this shit. If the guest don't wanna eat none, fine, but got dammit, if I say I want it for the special gat damn dinner, than it better be a fuckin platter full when I sit the fuck down....

I hate that he made all that shit happen, and she got the nerve to talk down on him in front of people....

Chalky house, his house was outta pocket for having another man lead them in prayer. It's like dudes that go to have dinner and sit at the head of the table in another mans house. Chalky was at the head of the table for a reason.

See I felt the exact same way. If she's going to criticize me at my table, then I can correct her muthu-fuckin' ass at that same table. She's "high signing" for guest, while he's facing danger everyday.

She cooked all of that other shit, it's nothing to cook rice and black-eyed peas for him too. They are a family of means because of "his" profession (even though it's on the other side of the law).

If he didn't check her there, then she'd get more and more out of line as time went on. How in the Hell you gonna make a man feel like an outsider in his own freaking house? He should have took her saditty ass upstairs and knocked them freaking panties off while everyone else was still downstairs hearing that shit. She'd stop that bullshit then.

No other man should pray at your table?

I think he miss directed his anger. Ain't no fixing that shit that night. That's what happens when you give your family more than you had. Ask me how I know. But let's be real. No black family fronting on Soul Food. White people wrote that scene.

From Youtube :

On the other hand, Chalky knew who he was marrying when he chose to "marry up." He married her because she wasn't "country" and he wanted to fit into big city, big business life. Expecting her to swing back and forth between the society madam and the simple homemaker wife is no less hypocritical. With late teen kids, they've been married 20 yrs. You can't tell me he didn't know how she was when there are guests over. He's pissed at either Nucky or Narcisse and taking it out on her.

Insulting Chalky by implying that this kid is better than him in not so subtle ways.
Mom doesn't want her daughter to end up with a man like Chalky.
And those who've watched the show know who the daughter ends up with...

Whoever wrote that scene, they did an excellent job of showing what could have happened between Chalky and his silver spoon fed wife. I can't remember what happened before that scene but Chalky was pissed about something and he was also drinking that night. His daughter brought over her boyfriend and well-to-do medical student boyfriend to dinner. Chalky's wife wanted her daughter to eventually marry the boyfriend to help insure her not struggle in life like a lot of black people did back in the 1920s. She wanted to impress the boy and I could see all of that happening back then. She was boujie and so were his parents so she put on a show and Chalky was drunk and wasn't having any of it! That was excellent writing and acting!
