I met a New York transplant at jury duty down here in New Orleans and he mentioned it and sounded good, once he explained that it was a sandwich and not chopped pieces of cheese. Do yall make them shits at home or get them from a corner store?

I'm thinking the thing is complicated, I have all of those ingredients on hand right now.

Except I got french bread.
yep real simple -just remember to toast the bread I smear a little butter on one side
also ime fresher bread = better sandwich

also I like to chop then fry peppers n onions and use garlic mayo

The MSG in the Adobo and it being available 24 hours a few steps from your front door for a few bucks is what makes it special.

So this is one of those after-the-club, drunk meals or a quick bite for people who work late?

It started out as a growing kid sandwich back in early 90s maybe late 80s. You went from getting a reg cheeseburger. Then your appetite increased. Bright idea was created to use hero bread and chop up the burger. Chop cheese was created. It was a nice cheap meal. You actually supposed to eat it with a bag of chips on the side( the real ogs know this).. you take a bite of the sandwich than eat a potatoe chip( Doritos preferably, some ate it with lays, some ate it with onion garlic chips, etc).. this was 30+ yrs ago.. now it’s popularized and many people sell it everywhere but still not the same from the original spot at the og hajis in Spanish Harlem.. also in the 90s this was the ultimate cheap date sandwich.. think of Dave chapelle half bake cheap date segment.. that segment spoke to nigs soul when it came on cause that’s how we really were and hajis was one of those spots/hidden gems

I can't stand NY philly cheesesteaks that cheesewhiz crap is for bums, melt that fucking provolone or pepper jack cheese on mine and who the fuck using ground beef for.......................fuck it nevermind not in florida!

I've never but I have had steak subs which is in the same space....

The weirdest things become the talk of the town now....

I followed Hajji's recipe, two burger patties, cooked them down with onions and added slices of cheese and creole seasoning (Hajji didn't mention exactly what seasoning he was using.), and put on lightly toasted and somewhat hallowed out French bread with lettuce and tomato. I definitely enjoyed it, if I were a New Yorker, it would definitely be something I would check for.

We always have French bread lying around and this gives us something else to put on it. I'm gonna try to find some adobo or mix my own blend and see how that tastes as well as getting some chips to go along with as @tallblacknyc suggested.

There was a thread going on. when I was really arguing with cars about chopped cheese. It's one of my favorite cheap sandwiches, plenty of places to get them now in NYC. Blue sky claims to be the original and they lot of Yorkers live them, I fuck with Ock though, Red Hook is my go to !!@

If that's what you're craving after the club, yeah, there's always a deli open late/24 hours.
Some people eat chopped cheeses daily but that's not the only thing they serve. They have great sandwiches in general and some have hot food plates by the pound.

I ain’t heard of no chopped cheese up until a few years ago.

Can any New Yorkers confirm if this was a thing growing up or years ago?

I am not a native New Yorker, but during my childhood I use to spend 1 or 2 weekends every month in Hempstead. We use to go to this spot near my aunt's house and get cheeseburger hoagies. Fast forward to maybe about 5 years ago, I started hearing everybody talk about chopped cheese. When I finally tried one, I was like, "Oh, this is the cheeseburger hoagie from back in the day. Farmer In the Deli (BK) does a chopped turkey if you're into the chopped sandwiches like that, but I usually do the straight turkey or the turkey pastrami if I happen to be in Brooklyn.

Nope because delis were mostly run by papi back then having a grill was rare. Ahk is more entrepreneurial and expanded the food selection.

Thanks for the info, I just never heard anyone speak about them and was curious.

Usually it is 1 big burger pattie not two.
Now see, depending on the borough you would do remixes.
Add bacon, mushrooms, green peppers different cheeses, BBQ sauce, mayo, mustard, oil vinegar, hot sauce.
It all depends.

Where I am from they would make a pizza style too.
