Its not that it's banned, it's that it doesn't offer the fullest protection against the current variants that are being passed around.

1) The other variants didn't exist at the time the original one was created. They produced a vaccine for the EXISTING threat. Had everyone masked up and stopped it from mutating, that is all we most likely would have needed, at least for a long while. It did what it was supposed to do, stop deaths for the existing virus. They didn't have a crystal ball to see how it would mutate. And tens of thousands more would have died without the vaccine had they waited until the bivalent one came available in Sept 2022.

2) How is it a banned substance if it is also part of the current vaccine?

I didn't have an issue with people who waited to get the vaccine or didn't get the vaccine at all. I myself put it off for a long time. Banned and unauthorized are not the same thing. When the bivalent vaccine first came out, not everyone could get it. Now that it is approved for everyone, the original one is being retired, because the new one does what it did and more.
