Mourning five people killed in Minneapolis crash Friday night

A horrific crash — and a day of mourning.

“This is a great tragedy that happened to our family, our community,” says Abdulahi Farah, one of the leaders of the Dar Al-Farooq Center in Bloomington.

Five young lives taken too soon.

17-year-old Sabiriin Ali, 20-year-old Sahra Gesaade, 20-year-old Salma Abdikadir, 19-year-old Sagal Hersi, and 19-year-old Siham Adam — were all longtime friends and members of the center’s Islamic community.

“Families are still processing,” explains Khalid Omar, the Center Director. “Some are just working through this moment of grief. They’re all coping, trying to figure out a way to move forward from this situation.”

Police say around 10:15 Friday night, a driver blew through a red light at Lake Street and 2nd Avenue — and slammed into a car with the five young women inside.

All of them, authorities say, died at the scene.

“This is an incredibly tragic and horrific scene,” declared Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara. “We suspect the driver was impaired.”

The chief says moments before, a state trooper was parked on Northbound 35W near 46th Street, working a radar detail.

“[He] observed this car coming by in excess of the speed limit,” O’Hara says. “The trooper then started to drive and attempt to get close to the vehicle to stop it — and was unable to catch up to the car before this accident happened.”

Authorities believe that vehicle, an SUV, passed the trooper at speeds of more than 95 miles per hour — before it left the highway on an exit ramp.

Police say after the crash, a man got out of the car and ran off, but that an officer eventually caught and arrested the suspected driver.

Investigators say he was transported to HCMC for medical evaluation and remained there as of late Saturday night.

Authorities have not identified the suspect or commented on potential charges.

On Saturday afternoon, the Dar Al-Farooq Center held a special service to honor the five lives that were lost — trying to comfort the families the best they could.

“We created space for them to grieve and to be able to work through this situation, this crisis that took place,” Omar says.

He called the young women ‘pearls of the community — and the brightness of our future.’

“Sabiriin Ali recently graduated from Edina High School. Two weeks ago, we were celebrating that milestone,” Omar recalls. “Salma Abdikadir was a teacher at our center. She served and taught students here at our center. Unfortunately, next weekend, these students are going to be without their teacher.”

The center’s leaders tell 5 Eyewitness News that the victims had just finished a shopping trip in preparation for a friend’s wedding that was to be held Saturday night.

And — that several parents of the young women had talked to their daughters just fifteen minutes before the crash.

Now — everything has changed.

The center is working on funeral plans to be held in the next day or so.

“We also want to look into what happened and get more information from officials as well,” Farah says. “But at this moment, I think we’re focusing on healing the hearts and really dealing with this tragedy. It came as a shock to all of us.”

Man arrested in high-speed Minneapolis crash that killed 5

Minneapolis police confirm Derrick John Thompson, son of former state Rep. John Thompson, has been arrested in connection with a high-speed crash Friday night that killed five young women.

Thompson, 27, was taken into custody Monday afternoon on probable cause murder.

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty says she is reviewing the case to make a charging decision.

Court records show Thompson has a prior felony conviction from a 2018 hit-and-run that injured a woman in Montecito, California. He received an eight-year sentence in 2020 but was released from prison earlier this year.

Minnesota driving records also show Thomspon was arrested and convicted for fleeing a police officer in 2017. His driver’s license was eventually revoked, but records show it was reinstated on June 7, less than two weeks before Friday’s deadly crash.

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS made numerous attempts to reach the Thompson family for comment. They have yet to respond.

Investigators say around 10:15 p.m. Friday, a driver ran a red light at the intersection of Lake Street and Second Avenue South before slamming into the car with five young women inside.

Police say Thompson got out of the car and ran off after the crash, but an officer eventually caught up to him and arrested him.

Thompson had been hospitalized since Friday night with injuries but is now well enough to be released and brought into custody.

The victims — Salma Abdikadir, Siham Adam, Sabiriin Ali, Sahra Gesaade and Sagal Hersi — were all between 17 and 20 years old. They were laid to rest Monday afternoon at Garden of Eden Cemetery in Burnsville.

Release of crash video under investigation

Moriarty and Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara are both speaking out in response to a leaked Metro Transit surveillance video circulating online showing the exact moment of the crash.

O’Hara said he does not know who leaked the video, but MPD and Metro Transit police are conducting an internal review.

“I will also review and consider policy changes to limit how video of evidentiary valuie may be received from an outside agency by members of the MPD,” O’Hara said in a statement.

Moriarty said in separate statement that she does not anticipate the video release to impact her office’s consideration of charges in the case.

That's why I tell people to slow down don't be in a rush to go no where

It always happens like this, the victims die while the jerk lives.

RIP to them young ladies....start sending these people to prison for decades

My son just rear ended someone. Everyone was ok, but stuff like this hits harder now. Smh. RIP to the sisters who lost their lives.

Why would he be?

He was not chasing him. The fool sped past the cop at around 95mh and the cop pulled out behind him to try and pull him over.
I went back and reread the police statement. To me it sounds like the cop gave chase, but the statement put out by the cops was carefully worded as to not use the word chase.

The only he could get "close" is by matching the speed of the car

Bruh he sped by the cop, saw the cop's lights and then hit the first exit running the red light. This wasn't some long high speed chase. Dude is a fucking moron and it's ALL his fault.

Don’t get me wrong, dude is a piece of shit.

But there's a reason police procedures were updated to eliminate unnecessary police chases.

We both know of cases where innocent people have been killed in the name of bringing criminals to justice.

Until I see a police car video showing what the cop car was doing during all this, I'm going to be skeptical.

Sure, but I don't think police procedure is to just sit back and let somebody just speed by when it happens. They still have to attempt to pull the guy over before they call it off. I didn't read details about this going far pass the point where he was spotted by the cop. I'm not condoning any unreasonable chase, but nothing about this case reads that way. Could be wrong, but either way even if it was a short chase, I can't put that on the cops. This guy's record is too fucked up.
