AV Help PLEASE! My 85" TV isn't playing the sound from the movies on my Hard drive

It sounds like your tv doesn't have DTSHD or DTS decoders built into the player software. You can shop online at Amazon or Walmart for any Android box with a Amlogic S905X4 chipset. Just install VLC or Kodi and you're good to go...
It's playing thru the TV. How do I update the codecs inside the TV player without taking apart the TV since Samsung doesn't offer them in upgrades?

What are you playing the vids from?
And how does it play or cast to the TV.
The TV has apps you can get if you want, some you have to buy.

Depending on what you're trying to do, I'm sure there's stuff out there to do it, others who've run into the same issues.

I personally don't save movies any more, haven't in years. I used to have my desktop running a shared drive for movies and ran Kodi on an AppleTV device in my theater room. But now just use my cell and play the latest movies to the TV over Wi-Fi. Delete them after the fam watches. Anything else old wife usually asks for I find it on torrents and delete it after we watch it if it's not on apps we have or Netflix.

I got netflix, hulu, whatever the fuck, but I also got a shitload of movies on my hard drive that I've already downloaded. Classics like:

JDs Revenge
The Spook Who Sat By the Door
Transformers The Movie 1986

Tons of movies and series that aren't on Netflix, Hulu, Max, Disney+, or anywhere

Roku & NVIDIA shield tv pro & Android TV Box are three options I have seen as possibilities.

I just want to be able to play the movies I've downloaded onto my 12TB. Something I can plug into my TV, Plug in the 12TB and enjoy my shit. Which is better and why?

Also, I've been using Fubo TV. It's $95. Can I get rid of this with Android TV Box. I need NFL NETWORK, which is why I'm still rocking with Fubo (even though they don't have TNT)
You can also stream from your PC

I play those bad boys connecting My 12 terabyte hard drive to my TV or in 20 minutes to my NVIDIA

Remember these? Mine would play anything.

You can't. It's part of the software package that the vendor provides. Most companies don't provide DTS/DTSHD codecs due to the cost of the license. Since most streaming uses AC3 or MP4 audio codecs, that's the cheapest routes that tv manufacturers use. Sometimes you have to use MKV tools to demux the files into seperate audio/video files, then convert the DTS/DTSHD file to ac3 with eac3to and then mux the new audio file with the video into a new MKV.. I do it on occasion when I want to watch a video on my cheap Walmart Roku Tv through its usb port.

Oh so the hard drive is directly connected to it. Then maybe you can find an app that will play them on the TV. I'm sure there is.

I wonder if the Firestick could do it or have an app on there. Must be

Edit: someone else said Plex, I'm looking at it on my TV, looks like it can do it with your media directly attached.

Alright so looking into it, Plex can't play them directly from the USB.

You're going to have to convert the files using HandBrake (free) to h.264 MP4 format. You can do them in a batch.

That's the simplest way without using nVidia or Firestick.

Good luck

I just got the NVIDIA. I'll be home in about 30 minutes. Is it relatively plug and play? Just plug the Nvidia up, plug the hard drive into the Nvidia and HDMI to HDMI to the TV and BOOM?

The Nvidia shield runs a version of Android, so just like your phone you'll have to log in with your Google account, then go to the play store and download a video player app which will then be able to see your drive.

Kinda weird...i haven't seen a name brand tv [in the past 10yrs] that can't play video files directly from usb drives..

What I had to do was convert the files that wouldn't play on my Samsung in the living room with free video converter. It's called free but I purchased the full program. I only run into a few files that wouldn't play and convert them or watch them on a Samsung TV in the bedroom. It's a fast converter but you can find a free converter somewhere if it's worth the trouble to you. And whichever type of files that won't play on your TV don't download them anymore.

All you need is this Bro and it's always been free.

It plays vids, just the codecs only allow H.264 or H.265 with AAC or AC3 encoding.
So vids usually that are DDP or encoded with Dolby have errors playing.

There are some. On an Onn tv, I watched Black Panther 2 from a micro SD card plugged into a USB reader connected directly to the TV. I was amazed myself. I still prefer a PC connected via HDMI for total control.

Codec issue. You shouldn't be using your TV for playing films anyway. Nvidia shield (if you want something with a hard drive that you also attach hard drives to - there's also google TV on various streaming systems.

Tv's are like cars, they make the cars with the wackest stereo player you have to get an after market for it to take off.

Samsung, slick. Trust me. Samsung has BEEN doing this. LG & Vizio only allow you to play music and pictures from hard drives.

When I bought my 55" in 2010, 30 inches ago, it had the same feature.

Yeah, I know. I was just going to use it until either I couldn't anymore or I got sick of the issues I was facing, and I got sick of the issues.

You got the Shield hooked up yet? How's it working for you so far?
I'm heading to Kalamazoo today. I tried hooking it up last night but the TV only has two HDMI ports and I accidentally connected it to the ARC HDMI, so when I realized my mistake it was already too late so I got to do all that again when I get back

The NVIDIA remote control doesn't need batteries? I couldn't see a way to put batteries in it and it already came working.

I'll come back to this thread when I come back from out of town. Again thank you all for the help.

There was a part where I was a bit scared or confused. It asked me to set up the hard drive and I was scared that it was going to erase everything on there so I didn't hit the button.

That hard drive is everything I have because I haven't backed it up yet, I know, I know

Make a backup. Take it from someone that had to learn the hard way, even more than once. :(

I'll do it as soon as I get back

I learned when my 4TB TV show hard drive died. To this day the only WD hard drive that ever died on me

I had the complete series of so many TV shows, even some that only lasted 1 or 2 seasons like Daybreak, Terra Nova and stuff like that

Yep, this was my go-to device back in the day. It was a beast and would play ANYTHING you threw at it.
I even had movie posters and screen wallpapers created to work with it.
I damn near cried when they stopped supporting it.
I stopped using it because it doesn't do 4K, when actually very little of my content has that high a resolution. But I had to switch up a couple times, so I just unplugged it, put it in the basement now I can't find it.

I have the Shield Pro as well playa......bruh, I love it. Got a 5gb HDD connected, downloaded VLC and my streaming apps.........

No issues.

Also ARC or EARC will allow the TV remote to control the Shield......

Sn: I've got lil kids and the remote locator function on the shield app is used constantly.

seems like it does support the file u r playing, if yr playing from a hard drive try plugging it up to another source like a ps5 or appletv box and play from it
