It took me a while to realize the overall reaction to the Civil Rights movement and "Summer of Love" was a multipronged attack on the very basis of democracy by the ultrarich.
To achieve their ends they needed a cultlike party and the Democrats after the dixiecrat fiasco weren't it. It was the reichpublican party that fit the bill.
