Florida's new immigration law creates 'panic' in agriculture community

Law could have wide-ranging impact on industries vital to state's economy

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Supporters believe a new Florida law recently signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis will crack down on illegal immigration.

Among the new law's provisions:

  • Tougher penalties for knowingly hiring or transporting undocumented in the state
  • E-Verify employment screening for new hires at businesses with 25 or more employees
  • Florida hospitals will collect immigration status and the state will no longer recognize outside driver licenses for undocumented.
  • Florida's migrant relocation program also gets another $12 million after previously flying nearly 50 undocumented from Texas to Martha's Vineyard.
However, from farming to construction, the law is expected to have a wide-ranging impact on a number of industries vital to Florida's economy.
WPTV is told that some farm workers are already too scared to go to work and are considering leaving the state, which could cause a huge staffing crisis for Florida agriculture.
"Everybody is in a panic because nobody knows what's going to happen," immigration attorney Gina Fraga said.

The new law is causing concerns for the agriculture community.

"I've been hearing that probably they will not be sending their kids to school, and they are afraid to go to work, and it's sad," Denise Negron, the executive director of the Farmworker Coordinator Council of Palm Beach County.

The new bill requires employers with 25 or more employees to use the E-Verify system to check legal status and those who fail to comply will be fined $1,000 per day.

"This is the people that we have to thank because thanks to them we have food on our tables," Negron said. "Agriculture and farm work is a job that nobody wants to do."

During a Thursday fundraiser gala for the Farmworker Coordinating Council, Negron said she worries for the organization's future as they work to provide social and human services to farm workers.

"Obviously they’re very worried because they could be fined they could be imprisoned by just transporting farm workers that maybe they don't have the specific documents that they need right now," Fraga said.

Fraga said an issue right now is immigration has a backlog of more than 10 months to get a work permit

"So their employers have told them, 'Unfortunately after July 1, if you don't bring me some documentation that's valid, unfortunately, you're going to be let go,'" Fraga said.

According to the migration policy institute, nearly 800,000 undocumented people live in Florida.

Fraga said the industries that will be most impacted will be the farming industry, construction and hospitality.

I have been talking about this for the last two weeks floor is about to go through the find out stage. Also hurricane season is a few weeks away. Ron DeSantis in the Republicans are fucking with everyone right now…….everyone!!!!

That just means New York City's population is going to increase like a muthafucka

by June 1st.
You know, I hate the fact that they use them for cheap labor, but shit is about to get crazier pricewise in Florida. This shit is going to run out a lot of white people now remember those white folks in Florida barely have money, especially the old ones. And like I keep saying hurricane season is coming if they get another Ian, there will be no one to repair that shit. Climate change you might as well. Just go ahead and flood Florida right now.

Years back when I watched the news daily, would watch three shows back to back nightly

I remember hearing Lil Bush, talk about immigration… in so many works he said, “I know y’all want me to do something about the illegal workers here but what I’m supposed to tell these onion farms in Idaho, when they won’t be able to harvest their crops”

I know every illegal ain’t working in fields but I got what he was saying

Fast forward to today…

All them mexicans and Latinos that supported DeSantis lookin sick right now.

You gone learn today.
Hardly got Mexicans in Florida. They Cubans, Venezuelans, Colombians, PR, and Central Americans. I hope xfingers this happens and all hard-working Latino's leave the state. Let that fucking state die.

Not just Florida. All of the uSA is about to find out.

Florida ranked second nationally in the value of production for bell peppers, grapefruit, all oranges, strawberries and non-Valencia oranges. The state ranked fourth in cabbage, cantaloupe and peanuts.

I only feel bad for the black immigrants. Haitians especially should all be given residency based on what's happening in Haiti. Florida is a fucked up place anyway. Too many racist ass Latinos for me and to many of them waiting at the boarder.
Yes, I had to remind someone on another board about this last night Cubans and Haitians are going to catch hell and does Cubans really should be ashamed of the selves because they voted for the fool. I talked to a few of them in Miami and they said their people is having a oh shit moment. The biggest problem with this is they are not going to get American people to do that job because they don’t pay nothing…. A lot of shit in Florida is going to sit and rot from vegetables to houses that are halfway built. This bill is going to fuck up everybody in Florida….. everybody

Illegal and undocumented immigrants are a net negative. They cost millions in healthcare and their children cost millions in general assistance and healthcare. Propaganda has us believing that they are the only ones capable of unskilled labor. The reality is that they bring down wages for American citizens(including Black folks) because they command so much less money.

Black construction workers will have more leverage in Florida now.
True, but is still not enough for them to go around and also those CAC’s are going to have to pay top dollar now. Ron and the Republicans really fucked over everyone including their own constituents.

Paying people more means higher costs in every thing else. Those low wage Mexicans keep prices lower. You start paying construction workers 40 an hour when them Mexicans making 10 watch how much houses costs. Let alone food being picked. Ain’t nobody doing that job for peanuts

A lot of the Haitians down here are trying to move up north where it’s cheaper, AL, IN, GA, etc. but yeah, Haitian with no papers :itsawrap:

Yep I feel sorry for them because I was cool with a Lot of Haitians when I was in Miami back in the 90s. As for those Cubans, they are getting a huge wake up call.

Welp, for everyone on BGOL that claimed Black people would do those jobs if not for illegal aliens, here's the test. The jobs are open. Should be a massive rush of Black employment to do them if you guys were right.

Black people would do this job if they paid correctly. There’s no way I’m doing construction work for 12 or $15 an hour in the hot sun of Florida…..hell no
