Those are probably fruit flies rather than gnats. The give away is that she said they're attracted to pineapples. Gnats prefer blood. If you have a scrape, they gather around the wound. They rarely go inside houses too.

Ummmmm.... I'm sure that's why she wants to get rid of them, and I'm sure that she doesn't leave food out to be exposed to them..... it ain't just cacs..... I know that when they do get in, you could come into the kitchen.... and within five minutes of you taking out any food... anything organic.... they start coming out of nowhere..... annoying fucking shitz.... and like you pointed out... you can't leave anything uncovered...
