FOXBOROUGH, Mass. —
Longtime New England Patriots assistant coach Matt Patricia is reportedly leaving the organization to take another NFL coaching job after the two-time Super Bowl-winning defensive coordinator had a tumultuous season as the team's offensive play caller.
ESPN's Adam Schefter said Thursday afternoon that Patricia has been hired by the Philadelphia Eagles as a senior defensive assistant.

The hire has not been officially announced, but Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said during a news conference Thursday that Patricia's hire was "trending" in the right direction. Patricia is also no longer listed on the Patriots coaching staff on the team's website.
"His resume speaks for itself," Sirianni said. "It gives you a great mind in there that's done it at the highest level. So it gives you great ability to bounce ideas off of the defensive staff and also gives me another former head coach that I can bounce ideas off of, as well, which I think will be very helpful."
Patricia, 48, first joined the Patriots in 2004 and served as an offensive assistant on New England's championship team that season. He was an assistant offensive line coach in 2005 before moving to the defensive side of the ball to coach linebackers from 2006 through 2010. He then coached safeties in 2011 before ascending to defensive coordinator and helping the Pats win two Super Bowls between 2012 and 2017.
In February 2018, Patricia was hired as head coach of the Detroit Lions but was fired in the middle of his third season after posting a record of 13-29-1.

Patricia returned to the Patriots in January 2021 as a senior football advisor, and in July 2022, the team announced that he would also be coaching the offensive line.
He was the Patriots' primary play caller during the 2022 season, during which second-year quarterback Mac Jones regressed under the tutelage of Patricia and quarterbacks coach Joe Judge. New England ranked 17th in scoring offense and 26th in total offense last season, a significant dropoff when compared to the 2021 season — when the team ranked sixth in scoring offense and 15 in total offense under offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Josh McDaniels, who is entering his second season as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.
In January, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick made the decision to re-hire Bill O'Brien as the team's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. O'Brien, who was most recently head coach of the Houston Texans (2014-20) and offensive coordinator for the University of Alabama (2021-22), was New England's quarterbacks coach from 2009 through 2011 and was also the team's offensive coordinator during the 2011 season.

Judge is still listed as an offensive assistant who works with quarterbacks on the Patriots' website. He initially joined New England in 2012 as a special teams assistant and was the team's special teams coordinator from 2015 through 2019. In 2019, Judge was also the team's wide receivers coach.
In January 2020, Judge was hired as head coach of the New York Giants, but he was fired after posting a 10-23 record over two seasons. He was rehired by the Patriots in February 2022 as an offensive assistant and was later named quarterbacks coach.
