  • Two US high schoolers believe they have cracked a mathematical mystery left unproven for centuries.
  • Calcea Johnson and Ne'Kiya Jackson looked at the Pythagorean theorem, foundational to trigonometry.
  • The American Mathematical Society said the teenagers should submit their findings to a journal.
Two high school seniors from New Orleans think they have managed to prove a 2,000-year-old theorem that has stumped mathematicians for centuries.
Their work got Calcea Johnson and Ne'Kiya Jackson far enough to present their findings to researchers, per an interview with local TV earlier this week.
Their work was on the Pythagorean theorem, a staple of high school math lessons which defines the relationship between the three sides of a right-angled triangle, expressed with the formula a2+b2=c2.

Although the theory holds true in every plausible example, no mathematician has been able to establish its truth from first principles, even though the theorem has been around ancient Greek times.
Because the theorem underpins trigonometry, experts have thought it impossible to prove, since you can't use trigonometry without already accepting that the theorem is correct.
In the abstract presented by Johnson and Jackson last week, the two teenagers gestured to this, noting the book "The Pythagorean Proposition" "flatly states" that there are no trigonometric proofs because they are "based upon the truth of the Pythagorean Theorem."
They countered in their work that the claim "isn't quite true." The two claimed they were able to prove the theorem using the Law of Sines, which did not rely on circular trigonometry.
When the American Mathematical Society met in Georgia last week, Johnson and Jackson were the only high schoolers at the meeting, according to New Orleans television news station WWL.
Their claim has not gone through the rigorous academic peer-review process — or been confirmed by other experts in the field.
Catherine Roberts, executive director for the American Mathematical Society, encouraged the young mathematicians to submit their findings to a journal where it can be assessed.
She said the society "celebrates these early career mathematicians for sharing their work," The Guardian reported.
"Members of our community can examine their results to determine whether their proof is a correct contribution to the mathematics literature," Roberts said.
In an interview with WWL, the students said they were excited just to be a part of the process.
"There's just nothing like being able to do something that people don't think young people can do," Johnson said, "A lot of times you see this stuff, you don't see kids like us doing it."

Good stuff, but definitely should have kept that under wraps until they could get it published. I’ve been in the research game long enough to know yo shit will get snatched by researchers and institutions with better resources. And they will quickly claim that you missed something nullifying your findings. If these people are ethical and compassionate enough, then they will leave them this opportunity to grow their interest and assist them.

Nevertheless, good for them for being in this realm. We do accept the theorem as truth because it works. I never thought about if it was proven.

Did I miss something here? Can't you just use Algebra to prove it? I don't understand why we weren't able to prove it before.
Mainly past white men and women never went outside with figuring out this equation. These young black girls came at this equation from a different angle, and it appeared to be the trick to solving the equation. This equation could have been set up along time ago by Black people.

It would be interesting if their findings leads to how the Great Pyramids was built.

It doesn't have any commercial application so they should be safe from terrorism. Don't go into too much detail about how you came up with it or talk to other people about it, If Hollywood wanted to do a movie this will force them to shell out money for your story. If you disclose everything publicly, they can bypass you.

This will draw attention to them, and they might be put under surveillance to see if they do anything else. I would keep any future work that may be commercially lucrative off your computer, just make a mental note. This also means no research, they can monitor what you look at and figure out what you plan to do.

Finally, keep tabs on them trying to backdate your research online to make it look like they had came up with it before you did. Don't trust any date stamps that Big Tech puts on anything.

You're right. There are hundreds of proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem, including lots using Algebra, but these girls have used Trigonometry to provide the basis for their proof. If it holds up, that would be something groundbreaking.

I believe it is me speaking up and out about my experiences, the battles already fought probably allowed them to do their thing.

You can end up being extorted, trigger terrorism if this discovery had some commercial viability, they don't play that letting you just do your thing. You will be cutoff from the media, than they will start violating you. Now if people can enhance their products with your discovery or develop something like Bitcoin or Tik Tok go into hiding.

They don't care if you end up developing 20 other things, they will harm/kill and take what they need now. They will gladly get into a conflict with you where you will exchange your life/freedom for one of their low level pawns. Don't look for any logic in their decision making, I believe they hear schizophrenic voices that guide their behavior.

Finally, if other groups approach that normally don't mess with us, like Asians or Indians - run off.

I see. It's the fact that they used trigonometry to prove it. Though still confusing to me because if you use sine and cosine to prove it you're using algebra, but you are also using trigonometric functions. I'm no expert on trigonometry so I don't know.

Yea I get your confusion. They may use some algebra to manipulate expressions and equations along the way but the basis of their proof and the arguments that they rely on are rooted in trigonometry.

You use lots of algebra when studying Calculus but you wouldn’t say that the course you’re taking is Algebra. It's a Calculus course with some Algebra, some Arithmetic, some Trigonometry used to build the understanding.

Well, since Pythagoras stole it from the Egyptians it only seems fair.

Remember, the europeans were savage, uneducated heathens until alexander invaded Egypt. Then, holy shit!!! All of a sudden we got math, algebra, astronomy, botany, biology, medicine, philosophy, and so much more. It's a goddamed miracle is what it is.

I'm not smart enough to have an opinion. Good for them though.

I feel you on this.

I remembercollege physics they’d give you a formula then spend the entire lecture showing it’s derivation.

In my younger years I could chime in, now I’ll need to spend a few hours differentiating algebra from trig.

You got to know when to hold’em…..

Im out

Carry on……

I would have stolen their valor and falsely claimed their work as my own. I would have distracted them before they could come out publicly or backdated my work with Big Tech as being done before them.

I have alot of effeminate traits and wouldn't have any issues doing this.
