ATLANTA (AP) — The Carter Center said Saturday that former President Jimmy Carter has entered home hospice care.

The charity created by the 98-year-old former president said on Twitter that after a series of short hospital stays, Carter “decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention.”

It said he has the full support of his medical team and family, which “asks for privacy at this time and is grateful for the concern shown by his many admirers.”

Carter, a Democrat, became the 39th U.S. president when he defeated former President Gerald R. Ford in 1976. He served a single term and was defeated by Republican Ronald Reagan in 1980.

In August 2015, Carter had a small cancerous mass removed from his liver. The following year, Carter announced that he needed no further treatment, as an experimental drug had eliminated any sign of cancer.

Carter celebrated his most recent birthday in October with family and friends in Plains, the tiny Georgia town where he and his wife, Rosalynn, were born in the years between World War I and the Great Depression.

The Carter Center, which the 39th president and the former first lady established after their one White House term, last year marked 40 years of promoting democracy and conflict resolution, monitoring elections, and advancing public health in the developing world.

James Earl Carter Jr. won the 1976 presidential election after beginning the campaign as a little-known, one-term Georgia governor. His surprise performance in the Iowa caucuses established the small, Midwestern state as an epicenter of presidential politics. Carter went on to defeat Ford in the general election, largely on the strength of sweeping the South before his native region shifted heavily to Republicans.

On a serious note, he, FDR, and LBJ were the 3 greatest POTUS we had in the 20th Century. I'm not saying they were amazing for us, but there were far worse than them.

Whenever you hear someone say people nowadays are "snowflakes," just remember how ppl reacted to his "Malaise Speech" in the 70s and you'll realize Americans were weak ass bitches back then too.

I have nothing bad to say about President Carter as his tenure was president ended before my birth but I will state that I'm pretty sure we are going to get some real ugliness from conservatives after he passes but it is always an interesting read to see his presidency and post-presidency compared.

If ya'll don't know, James Earl Carter of Plains, Georgia, was a real BADASS DUDE when he was in the navy. Bigger brain and balls than any other president. 1953 the Canadian nuclear power plant north of Toronto was the scene of the worlds first nuclear accident and Ottawa contacted the Eisenhower administration to send their best. The White House contacted the Navy, who contacted Admiral Rickhover who created the first reactors for ships and submarines and Rickhover sent his best man - JImmy Carter. Carter took over the emergency, and supervised the shutting down of the reactor - which meant men had to go into the reactor chamber for up to a minute and a half at a time. Carter was the last to go in and confirmed that the reactor had shut down.

Jump forward to Three MIle Island, Pennsylvania, in 1978/79. The Rethuglicans begin to ask why he didn't go to the site of the accident, trying to make him look weak. They got milage out of it, because the Canadian incident was still classified. Carter could not explain why he COULDN'T go because any exposure would have put him over the lifetime limit of exposure to radiation - because he's a fucking badass hero who put his ass on the line - unlike Reagan.

Jump forward to the Iran Hostage Crisis, not only does he try to get them back with military action (whose failure was not his - inter-service rivalry, complexity and a sandstorm played a role), six diplomats hid at the Canadian embassy. The movie "Argo" zeroes in on the CIA agent, but the Canadians did more than what is shown in the flick. Ottawa NEVER forgot the name James Earl Carter, and had his back when he needed them.

He’s coming in for the Final touchdown. He’s breaking World Records daily, has done more as a former president than any other and hopefully history will look back kindly on his life’s work as a Civil Rights leader and humanitarian. Give that man his props!
It’s kind of sad when you have to rationalize, “He was never outwardly racist.” Jimmy is a man surrounded by Men of Empire in history and was able to clearly be the most decent and honest. His predecessor was scum and so were his successors. All of them.

Jimmy Carter said in a statement, "Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished. She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me."
God damn his statement hit hard.

Both of them had a full and beautiful life and marriage together and should be a model for all of us to live and follow. They were indeed born to be together for ever. Jimmy probably will be leaving to follow her soon. Still doesnt make it any easier when they leave us
