Wait, someone steals your car - you go to get it back. You have a weapon, the people in the car start to shoot at you, you're supposed to know one of the shooters is 12? How is that even possible? And does it matter at that moment? They are shooting at you and you are returning fire.
The only thing I fault the guy for is trying to retrieve his car with a gun. He should have located the car and called the police. Now, if they were in his driveway and he came out at night and tried to stop them, by all means...shoot away.

You're assuming these cases are different. In both cases, they took the word of thr shooter at face value. The article states they don't know who shot first. Could be a problem if he started the gun fight.

Most barely got decent insurance.... but the better companies hook you up right away..... if you got full coverage, you get that rental vehicle, and Enterprise will come get you and bring you to the spot to pick up the car...... and you're covered for up to thirty days or less..... and they'll pick up the rental when you leave it at the shop where your car is when it's done.... don't really know what kind of insurance you guys got.... But folks who the "welp at least they have insurance" remarks knows nothing about deductibles and how not everyone has full coverage. And it's always the people who have the least who are quick to dismiss other folks getting robbed, to me it's like they identify with crooks more than honest hard-working folks who are trying to make ends meet.
True..the car was probably insured. But it's the principles for some folk. You don't know what a person is going through or their mentality. Thats why it's best not to fuck anyone.
